I just love the fact that Caligula tried so hard to be a god but died hated, while old Uncle Clau Clau with whom Caligula taunted and teased became a God.
Messalina was young, beautiful, had access to A LOT of power, and completely abused all those traits -- just to name a few. Unlike Livia, she totally lacked any type of self-discipline; therefore, she should never have been granted access to the position of an Empress.
@Khrys32 If the story is to be believed, Livia is restrained by bringing the Claudii into power. Messalina was merely corrupted by power. Poor girl, compare to Livia she is a girl to a woman.
@Khrys32 Of course, too much sex and blood and not enough history. Still, the gene Claudii, in a nutshell, was an established family that produced a good number of consuls and other positions. Augustus and his family, the Julians, benefited greatly in associating their raw power with the Claudians' tie with the nobility. But Livia, if the story is to be believed, never forgot her Claudian/Claudii identity and make sure the Julians are denied power whilst the Claudians ascend.
Politically correct. A temple to the God Claudius. It's a cult.

The last scene is very moving. Being made a God gave Claudius no comfort.

@twhwa Who exactly are the Claudii? You know, I think I heard that name mentioned on "Rome". Remember that HBO series?

Sorry, but Messalina deserved her fate. It was his death or hers. What a traitor she was.
