I hope our tax dollars did not pay for this. By the looks of it, I would guess that were the case. Wasted taxpayers money even back then. Who would build a snow vehicle with smooth tires. What was this thing 3 feet off the ground? They had to know snow was deeper than that in Antarctica! Come on!
@brinkley0987 My late Mother's Uncle (Alton Wade) was to be the pilot for the Snow Cruiser on it's expedition. I found a letter (in our attic) Alton wrote to his brother (post marked 1941). In the letter, headered "Aboard the Antartic Snow Cruiser" Alton describes his frustration on the apparent failure of the vehicle. He also felt that with a few modifications it would have perfprmed as expected. It's pretty fascinating to have a bit of history in my family.
@tyande1 If you still have that letter it would be of great historical importance. It would help clear up the mystery of The Mysterious Snow Cruiser that is being broadcast by the hollow earth theorists. According to them it was never mentioned on Admiral Byrd's return. They believe it was used to go underground beneath the earth’s crust and it's still there.
@fffreddie That's funny. Yes I do still have it. I can still remember the day I found it. I'm not quite sure what I intend to do w/ it. I would like to have it displayed in a museum, or pass it on to my kids.....I've done a little research and what's interesting is there was some discussion that this expedition with the cruiser was assembled in an effort to explore this area before Hitler staked his claim in that region, who knows.
@tyande1 A museum about the Admiral Byrd expeditions might be the way to go. Have pictures taken of it or scanned. This way you have some proof if it gets lost or stolen.
how cool. my great grandfather is thomas poulter and he's the one who directed this cruiser. shame it didn't work, but it's quite an accomplishment.

Pretty big vehicle its day. Must have been awe-inspiring.

Well, it certainly then received a better ending in the novel than what reality dealt it...

I agree. It's a shame no one took better care of it.

@Alsimair I'm not positive but I believe the underground earth dwellers that the hollow earth theorists believe exist have it. :-)
