To settle some debate on the M14. The M14 which is the military version can be set to either Semi or Full Auto. The M1A which is the civilian version can only be set to Semi. Many of the M21s and M14 that are set to sniper rifle configuration have the selector welded so that it cannot be set to full auto. There is a BIG difference between a standard M14 and a M21. Much more than 500 words can describe.

@Himdarling44 actually, its pretty simple. The difference between the standard GI M14 and the GI M21 is the stock bedding and the rifle itself, the receiver is glass bedded into the stock to keep a tight fit and the rifle is a National Match rifle meaning the barrel is a heavy weight barrel, however; the Rock Island EBR M14 sniper rifle is a standard M14 rifle with the standard GI barrel, but since the barrel is essentially free floating in the EBR stock, it is just as accurate as a Nam M21.

@n2dabloo no semi-autos have surved as sniper rifles quite often, its just usually limited to 600yds due to its gas operated rotating bolt...but yes it can definitly be classified as a sniper rifle

Squad Designated Marksmen are not technically snipers but are troops who are good shots that are sent to a special school to perfect their shot.

this being just me, if I had to got drafted and was sent into a combat theatre,I'd pray to be issued a m-21,being a experinced deer hunter from the Midwest, it would feel more like a traditional rifle than plastic/alloy facade of the M-16/M-4 family

In fact over 80% of US Army combat personnel returning from the war said they were satisfied with the M-16 family. The m14 makes a good DMR rifle but is to long and heavy to be good GI rifle.

hows the terrain is it hilly, flat, forrest

im from Nebraska i live in Georgia now but outside of Omaha is hilly with little trees so deer hunting is kinda long distance and wind is bad i havent hunt up there but ive seen videos but down here its thick trees and mountians deer hunts is pretty close usely within 100 yrds

a lot of variation in terrain type and elevation, both types of forests and woods, farm field and pasture, a lots of fresh water marshes and swamps. i hunt near the I-94 with my brother and dad, and longest open sight line we have is in the 800 to 1,000yds+ range. I typically don't go after anything past 600yds because of the high grass.

It's not true. You can use Sionics sound suppressor (silencer) on M21.

@VoxxGD Nope, you just have to jump through an unreasonable number (and scale) of hoops. Many police departments have been using suppressors for years in order to prevent hearing damage & there's a strong advocacy group for that goal.

M21 is an M14 that is hand picked for accuracy and converted to shoot semi-auto only. The M14 can shot semi and full auto.
