  • Guess u need to be Morphy to find a minority mate from position like that :-)

  • At 2:15, what about Bd3, storing up the threats of f4 and Bf4. Seems pretty darn strong. What you played definitely can't be criticized though.

    Nice game, a real steamroller!

  • You are my hero

  • Cool win. I suspect he was practizing a new pet-opening and hadn't yet found anything against a scotch reply to his a6. Maybe he has interesting ideas in other variations. Or maybe he's just a patzer. You played it like a champ though

  • I think 3...a6 4.g3 Bc5 is fantastic for Black.

  • moar! ;-)

  • destruction. great game. one mistake and you murdered him.

  • Tactical annihilation. =)

  • Note in the normal Scotch 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Nxd4 Bc5 5.Nf5 Black can play either ...Qf6 or ...d5!

But with the extra moves Nc3 and ...a6 thrown in, ...d5 just hangs a pawn and ...Qf6 gets hit with Nd5 before Black has a chance to play ...Nge7 (as in the game).

  • instead of bishop f4, maybe Nxg7+?

  • With the point being Nxg7+ Qxg7 Nxc7+ ? I guess so.

I'm not sure if it's an improvement over Bf4 though. I'd rather keep the initiative. Nxg7+ Kd8 and now what?

  • It is actually fairly common to see moves like a6 when I play on FICS. I liked your play very much. You typically don't see moves like these in higher playing fields, so it can be a bit difficult to know what to play when people play openings like that especially in blitz. I really like watching you play Blitz.;) Post some more please.

  • I wanted to say a big thank you for posting these games. It's great for a beginner like me to see how a much stronger player assess positions and makes descisions, and I also find them really entertaining.

  • Good game.

  • He played really bad in my opinion.. his opening was terrible, his a6 pawn...ehm, I just didn't get it.

  • Say I played 4.g3 like I was thinking of. Then he plays 4...Bc5 with a reverse Bishop's Game, taking an active diagonal and preventing d4. The ...a6 move is now useful because the B can drop back to a7 in the event it's attacked by Nc3-a4. 5.Nxe5 is impossible now due to 5...Nxe5 6.d4 Bxd4! 7.Qxd4?? Nf3+.

On the other hand 3...Bc5 is known to be sub-par due to 4.Nxe5. So 3...a6 is a nuance... if White plays too quietly Black gets what he wants.

  • I love watching these chess blitz videos with commentary . I learn much more than I would by myself. Thank you !

  • 2k rating common chop chop :P

  • i don't see any line with A6 that do good for black

  • 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 is fine for Black, in fact, it's the main move.

  • Great vid! You make chess look so easy lol. Keep making 5min blitz's too!

  • Annoying sound in the background.

  • I saw your last 3 games and i noticed that you play the 4 knights Scotch. Why dont you go for the scotch directly? 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.Bc4. it is the opening that im currently studying and it does have a very aggresive play and very good chances

  • I haven't been studying theory much lately so I'm trying to avoid sharp lines. 4...Bc5 will probably lead to a Max Lange and 4...Nf6 5.Ng5 is the Perreux variation of the Two Knights. (Although I suppose 5.O-O is possible)

  • awesome game. You really made him pay for a6, but yeah, after Qf6, the game was pretty much lost.

  • ...a6 may not be a terrible move, but I think I found the best way to approach it.

  • After your Nf5, it seem's black is losing already..

so what's the best way for black to play after your d4? He has to take right? Or is Bc5 the 'bad' move?

  • Hmm... thoughts for black

After 6.Nf5 Kf8 7.Be3 Bxe3 8.Nxe3 White has a big plus but Black is not lost yet. I don't see where his play is, though.

    6.Nf5 g6 7.Be3 Bf8!? seems reasonable to me.

Also after 4.d4, maybe ...d6 is playable. After 5.dxe5 Black can either take with pawn and try to hold the Q-less middlegame or try the gambit 5...Bg4!?

  • Yeah, after 6.Nf5 Kf8, you stopped black from castling and his position seems pretty lifeless. Of course black isn't 'lost', but he's well on the way there heh..

About your second line, after 7.Bf8!? where would you retreat your knight? Back to d4, or perhaps to g3, and would you prefer to castle long or short? If you go back to d4, i guess he can just repeat moves.. so g3 and castle short and perhaps play f4 later? Black seems to be down so many tempo after that.. so a6 can't be good imo.

  • In the 4.d4 line, after trade of queens, B is going to take with Kxd8 and now can't castle? certainly that's all bad, and a direct result of a6.. while it's not immediately lost, it certainly shows that blacks opening is stuffed? So when you say it's not a terrible move(outright blunder), it can certainly be considered a 'bad' move right?

The 7.Bf8!? line is the best line out of those 3? Even in that, I'm guessing that white has at least +0.50 advantage? U checked with engine? What do they say?

  • The gambit line looks ok i guess, and i probably would of went for that(or the Bf8 line) if i was black. The other lines look just as hopeless with no counterplay.. Not castling and being behind in development and tempo is just anathema to me.

Some criticism.. when you are waiting and doing nothing, perhaps a quick rundown on positional motifs/alternate/candidate moves for you and black would be good.

Thanks for replying and i hope you upload more live. Very instructive and fun to watch. GG

  • thanks for posting these games...

  • are those your own voice files for 'check' and 'i won'?

  • No they came with Thief

  • Go rated! ;-) I know you're just getting back into it, no worries.

But yeah, the four knight scotch isn't bad. As Black, I tend to prefer 14-year Scotch. Especially against a good player. I find it gets me in the mood to lose.

(Also, nice game. You destroyed him.)

  • I think he expected you to move Bb5 to get into the Ruy Lopez. That's probably why he moved a6 in my opinion.

  • 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bb5 is the most popular continuation in that position. Maybe he was trying to avoid that line. Or maybe he didn't notice what my 3rd move was.

  • again, great to have you back

  • oh there you go. I thank you for paying attention to my comment

  • Thanks for another video!
