@rmesjim No you are wrong. The earth spin 27 times for every revolution of the moon. If they spun at the same rate, then a month would be only 1 day long and also the other side of the planet would never see the moon. The reason the moon "shows the same face" is because its rotaion is equal to it's revolution. Please don't be so stupid.
@Anthonyk312 You started your "speech" saying -I am wrong- and end it up calling me stupid. Not a bad balance! To talk about why I didn't understand your previous comment and why, obviously, I didn't explain myself properly, becomes pointless. I really wish you a life full of love and human comprehension.
this was a waste of money for me because i never finished building the thing.. wish i had never even started it now. if i was more organised and motivated i could have finished it.
Near the end it got too heavy and difficult to build.
i always wanted one so i found out about them and that they were called orrerys etc started to look at prices and there about £1600 - 2 grand or more usually some watchmaker type bloke making them as one offs, very dear. this one works out about £340 over a year.
it is a lot. you should make sure you definitely want it and will have the motivation to finish building it to the end. Then it is probably quite a nice item to own,
I am talking about the orrery in this video by the way, not the other one which has only the earth and the sun.
The publishers are LYING! They say it's made of brass - it's not. Hold a magnet hear the "brass" pieces - they are strongly attracted, showing they are ferrous, not brass. I was wondering why the instructions say they are coated with a "protective laquer" and that you shouldn't try to clean or polish them. Why? You'd damage the brass plating!
Actually, if you actually read the magazines, it says the gears are solid brass whilst the non-working parts are brass plated. If you hold a magnet next to the gears, it isn't attracted, ergo, the gears are indeed solid brass. They do actually say that the non-working parts are brass plated, so they are not lying.
Just drove to about 15 newsagents looking for issue 10 only to find out that this pain in the arse magazine is no longer available over the counter from newsagents. Why didn't the magazine state this in one of the issues from 1 to 9! I cant even get it from W H soddin Smiths!!
If you look at the model of earth in the above T.V. advert you see clouds & ice caps. Nothing like the model earth we get. I just hope the rest of the planets, Mars etc bear some resemblence to what they are supposed to look like & havn't been painted by David Blunkett!
just brought issue 8! Was so exited until i looked at the model of earth. wot a load of rubbish. my 3 year old daughter could have made a better job job of the home planet! When you see the T.V. advert & the pictures of earth in the mag you see fine detail with clouds & ice caps. My model's just green & blue blobs. To pay £5.99 for this shabby model of earth is a rip off. Even my model of the moons bent! Im feel like ive been mislead. I want the model of earth with clouds & ice caps!
Its going to have to be a powerful little motor to make all those gears go round can't see how everything will end up lined up in the right position yet!
This sucker is harder to build than you would think. Some of my pieces dont seem to fit perfectly. Not sure if they have not been designed perfectly or if it is my own fault for not fitting them correctly. It still looks cool though.
Cor!! just had to 'ave it-Shiny, Spacey, drool! £300 in total-2 issues free.Compared to what is asked for much lesser versions, this one is excellent value!(As also includes an Astronomy Encyclopaedia.)-I intend to make additional Brass collars to fit under the Planets-fitted with the correct number of moons-Should make a nice improvement. Good Luck.
Yay! I am getting this. I have the first four issues. Does anyone know if I should buy the toolkit, or just use the stuff I have around the house (my parents house). Not sure if I need to buy that or just use stuff I have. it looks confusing hopefully I will be able to build it.
I'm actually building this, and I have to say - the number of parts with each issue is dissappointing. If they included a reasonable number of parts with each issue (e.g. 1 planet per issue) then it would be much better value.
I can see a lot of people starting, then getting bored with it half-way through and giving up.
I'm building it as I go along - Having 52 sets of parts around my house would just mean i'd lose some, and if you leave it until the end you may not be able to order replacement parts for the earlier issues if they are badly fitting etc.
I'm using my own tools. No sense in subscribing for the toolkit when I already have all the tools around the house.
I've subscribed with my newsagent which is good enough for me - if an issue is damaged I just tell them and they sort it all out , no hanging around for customer service ;)
Just fitted first part. You are right it is better to do it as you go along. it would have been more confusing to have 52 sets of parts! (as opposed to 4)
I think 300 pounds is comparable to what you would pay if you asked a machine shop or artist to make the parts for you, and of course you'd need to have a working design. If you want a cheaper mechanical model you might look for Planetica by sculptures-jeux in Paris. It has only 6 planets and is plastic.
i just bought one compelet on ebay...ooooooh cant wait for it to arrive !

Astronomical accuracy? The earth and moon are spinning at the same rate! I'm no expert, but i don't think that's right!

@Anthonyk312 They actually do. That is the reason why the moon always "shows the same face".

only 52 peices, though ya... that thing looks freakin HUGE
thecanadian1313 1 year ago
52 issues. but each issue has more than one piece, so you end up with more than 52 parts.

(though some parts are very small like little bolts and stuff)

This looks nice

josholins 3 years ago
Yeah space stuff is cool. The center of the sun is 15 million degress centigrade. I couldnt believe that when I read it.
Simon0 3 years ago
if you had a teaspoon of the suns centre, everything as far as 150km would erupt in flames.
intense.
moniquedanielleee 2 years ago 8
@moniquedanielleee ...and if you had a tea spoon of a neutron star it would weight 5 500 000 000 000kg.
Also if you would drop an object from an altitude of one meter, the object would reach the ground at 2000km/s due to INTENSE gravity.

Well I just got the !st issue

i wonder what you do if and when the electric motor blows? also does it clink and burb when its going round?
lndac02 3 years ago
Apparently the motor itself is silent. But I dont know if the gears click or whatever.
Simon0 3 years ago
so far from what i've made the gears don't click
josholins 3 years ago
But eventually it will amount to about £300, since there are 52 parts to it, ie 52 weeks => (51x£5.99)+(£1.99)= £307.48, unless I've misunderstood.
Nikzad7 3 years ago
must have one, now. it looks great value!
