This was from May 1951, and the festival continued through September. George VI's left lung was removed in September 1951 and he died in February 1952. He had been ill for some time when he gave the speech.
They say stammering is not psychological, but, by now The King was out from under the influernce of his tyrannical father and his intimidating elder brother. He had led the country through a horrific war to victory. The India problem had evaporated. In short the atmosphere in which he lived had changed completely. And here he is speaking beautifully. Is that just a coincidence?
@UncleMikeNJ Don't be silly please! It is a long time since the Monarch actually led the country in a true sence. Also, i'm not too sure the present Queen does enjoy her role. I'm sure she would rather be retired living in the country full time with her horses and dogs.
@UncleMikeNJ Had he lived another 20 yrs or so or longer then I am certain that he would have enjoyed leading his nation. His reign was always one of struggle, personally and nationally, only in eventual post war prosperity and stability was enjoyment able to become a part of British and its Monarch's life!
God save the King!

He seems to have gotten over his stammer, or at least vastly improved in this film. Bloody good show!

The speech therapies worked. Too bad he never seemed to enjoy leading his nation, as his father clearly did, and as his daughter still does.

In the U.K., in order to be a good king, you have to be a good man. And George VI was indeed a good man and a great King!

When Britain needed a strong King the most, we were sent George VI, who carried us through the war with courage and dignity.

@mickjai his stammer was an obstacle which didn't hamper his determination to be a good king and lead the Empire
