  • Feel his face says it all.My kind of musician playing from his souls need to express its self.

A musician of this caliber is always innovative and inspiring.

    Thanks for the post...cheers.

  • Master and teacher. Technique, chops, passion. Perfection!

  • :35 = smack in the face!

  • He's so relaxed its like he's taking a shit and playing...

  • AH his buzz rolls sound like a faucet they are so clean. He is definitely a legend.

  • hole E shit... i love this guy.. : )

  • The look on Papa Jos face says-''look how easy this is''! If only!

  • just goes to show, you don't have to make a lot of "noise", to demonstrate great drumming.. i love heavy rock drumming also, but this is just amazing. there are certain things, that you need to keep the volume down on, in order to appreciate.

  • He has perfected accents. I wish I could play even 1/100 as well as he could.

  • Its like the drumkit expresses itself by using his face

    I like ^^

  • A master drummer and showman! An inspiration to all drummers!

  • so tasty...always the king

  • Iv never seen a man who enjoys the sounds of his drums more =D

  • Artistry, musicianship and rhythmic supremacy in full orchestration.

  • Who's John Bonham?

  • It is sad that most people today can not see the" true nature of the greatness of guys like Jo Jones. All some people can see is "how does he do that? that left hand is amazing wow!". If someone would give you his hands today you would never be able to play like this. Because there is a much more important element there than the hands. Figure it out.

  • There absolutely are no guys like this today. He's simply fantastic not just because of his hands or facial expressions, but because they have meaning. He's painting with drum sounds, acting, telling stories. You can bet a million bucks that there are no such guys today in this technique obsessed, technology oppressed society we live in!

  • HOW IN THE WORLD DOES HE DO THAT BUZZ ROLL???? amazing

  • i wish this guy as alive 2day

  • I from of Argentina. it's buy here?

  • this is what making your drums speak and tell a story sounds like

  • This is who the Joe Morello fan club should be paying homage to.

  • @Easleytee Can't I be a fan of both?

  • Wow. Wow. I am floored. I wish there was an accompanying video of just his hands. Yes I like to see his facial expressions, but, good God, his hands are where the magic is happening.

  • I don't know what's better - watching his hands, or those fantastic facial expressions!

  • One of the hardest things ever is to play the drums quietly like that, with control and finnesse.... aww that buzz roll.... the buzz roll... yes.

  • being a metal drummer i love it BUT nothing stands close to these old Jazz guys!

  • Man, Papa Jo is The Original Milk Cup-INVENTOR on the drums! I saw Rich perform live, and seen him on Carson and others shows, but now when I sit back and look at it all, Rich was nothing compared to Papa Joe. Rich was just like Animal on the drums, but with no grace like Papa. Papa leaves Rich and others like him behind in a cloud of dust!

  • The 3/2 clave rhythm at 1:30 is something ive been trying to master for years - and still can't get that fucking bass/hat combo in perfectly.

True master of all styles and underapreciated.

In many ways more admirable that Rich for his subtly

  • excelente lml

  • Unreal!

  • He makes the drums sing.

  • And John Bonham was the first to play with his hands and cross stick! LOL! This guy was beyond great.

  • his facial expression are so awesome they make me wanna quit drumming lol

  • that beat right there at 1:24-1:42 takes a lot of coordination! looked simple, but when i tried it, i just can't do all those at the same time. LOL.

  • @thereyougoantonio that is a 3/2 clave. a latin rhythm.

  • thumbs up if u saw him look at his wrist as if to tell time

  • thumbs up if you tapped ur foot at any moment of the video

  • one of the best drum solos i`ve ever seen .... what a genius

  • la cara de ganador me mata!

  • Dynamics, so quiet too!

  • he is a magician....

  • boring, he shouldnt stop after every 20 seconds he plays

  • @WannabeMusicMaking its classic bro! nothing boring about it

  • @420jaymac no its annoying ;p

  • @WannabeMusicMaking yea i find class and talent annoying as well

  • If you don't get the faces you just don't get it

  • After you get over how irritating his faces are, it's a really good solo =)

    What year is this from?

  • dwight howard of drums...

  • This is relaxing

  • Exitated face

  • why he does those faces???

  • Now I am convinced Buddy Rich was definitely inspired by Papa..So much similarity

  • more than 5 minutes of a solo that's not just hitting the drums like we do...more than 5 minutes of pure art! his face is like he's having sex with the drums...

  • boring

  • One of the greatest drummers to have ever picked up sticks..

    Classic superstar

  • His face is priceless, he is so casual about being a god.

  • Hes snare roll is AmAzInG

not really my style but stll quite awsome!

  • No blasting singles nor single handed here (and I'm a BIG BIG fan of Buddy, Gene, Steve Smith or Jojo Mayer), just great taste and aboveall MUSIC.

There's a reason if Mr Smith, when asked, always brings people like Papa Jo Jones, Philly, Elvin, Tony Williams as inspirators and Masters

  • Amazing

  • With all of the Buddy Rich drum battles out there Papa Jo would had been a tough one! I think Buddy knew that too!

  • I love the eyebrow twitches

  • This has been my "YouTube Video of the Year"; I just can't help coming in here daily and, in only five minutes, tasting a delightful shot of Drumset Music.

  • And rock drummers thought Bonzo was the first guy to play barehanded! Awesome solo from a great one!!!!

  • This one made my day!

  • tells a strory while viewing each of the drumset as a seperate voice

  • This is MUSIC !!

  • groovy

  • I wish I could do that ALSO!!!!!

  • I wish there were guys like this today.

  • @spacitydrummer4JC Belive me, there are so many people wishing for real musicians like him today

  • @spacitydrummer4JC .... guys like this come along once a century .... charismatic , supremely talented , and oh so musical

  • that smile!

  • @bewlaybrutha why would you make a comment like that, what is wrong with you?

  • @sutchsteve

Hmm, what's wrong with me? I guess that I'm honest and have good taste in music.

  • my first influence was papa joe...heard him with Pres at Birdland back in '49 and knew that I had to play...

  • He was certainly enjoying playing that solo!

  • mush more rhyme and groove than Buddy Rich

  • Some drummers can make more of a moment in time with their little finger and a lot of soul than most could ever do in their lives.

  • Absoloute MASTER

  • I LOVE HIS FACIAL EXPRESSIONS!!!!!! hahahahaha they just make the whole thing like 7x as amazing XD

  • @drumjedi, I am with you! This solo blows me away every time I watch it. He is a master!

  • WOW! Such skill. Such finesse. and all while standing! the Man is truly the legend

  • FUCK BUDDY RICH!

  • Who says you need a lot of speed to make a great solo?

  • Incredibly stylish and Yes, deeply respected by Buddy Rich. papa jo is one of the "Greats" who brought his love of playing into the performance. He's great.

  • he does it with such pride and happiness! it was great.

  • Good lord those dynamics and groove are just inhuman!!! I think some great dancer needs to record a dance to this, seriously.

  • He makes me laugh watching him, such character in his playing

  • I love that kind of "cocky" look he got while playing the drums. But the most fantastic part of the video is really just to see how much he enjoys playing. Really gives you the impression of how music moves people.

  • They don't call him "Papa Joe" for nothin'!

  • STUNNING! so subtle. Amazing use of space and silence. A true joy to listen to. and the classic Philly Jo smile to top it off. Thank you for posting!

  • So NO ONE has commented on this video???? WOW. That amazes me...10,326 views and NOTHING. Huh...Well...He I go...THIS MAN IS THE SHIT!

  • how can he reach that speed on the rimshot???

  • papa jo was buddy richs fav drummer. thats who the great buddy rich emulated.theyre styles are alot alike. papa is definitely tight as my asshole in cold water.even more so than buddy. prob one of the best EVER

  • Drum God !!

  • this is like ,"god on drums'

  • one of a kind for sure. i find him a little scary - so far beyond what i can do that it discourages me. but still there is a lot here that even beginner drummers can steal. not the tricky, fast bits, tho - they're papa's for ever!

  • One of a kind......

  • I got to meet Papa Jo once...(yeah I'm old, wanna fight about it?)...anyway, most of the videos you'll see of him are playing the same unique style drum solos with bare hands, karate chops, finger rolling and 4 sticks sometimes.

A lot of people don't understand he actually invented the hi-hat and could play it like no ones business.

His advice was to always smile while playing and be professional.

  • Aside from being one of the greatest drummers ever, I'd say he could have made it as an actor as well.

  • Of all the Swing drummers, Papa Jo Jones is by far my favorite.

  • The Nureyev of drums. A true ballet dancer of beats. Pure genius, pure delight. Nothing more to say. His drumming is beyond the words.

  • 0:08 solo of the week? i'd rather say solo of the decade!

  • Just amazing, he does stuff I've never seen drummers do before, he was obviously before my time - unfortunately.

  • PERFECTION !

  • It's difficult to say any better than drumjedi did - ready to sign under each word!

  • press roll heaven. Can't do em you ain't a drummer

  • Beautiful. It's too bad that solos like this don't win Guitar Center's "Drum Off".

  • Just a simple roll is jaw dropping. It is just too smoooooove.

  • grace, style, creativity, beauty, technicality, musicality, and joy... out of 5 stars this gets a 7!!!!!!!

  • @drumjedi i'd say a 100-1000

  • @drumjedi Yup you got that right. Good adjectives! I met Jo Jones at Jim and Andy's in NYC back in 1973. We talked about anything but drums. And Hudson, good job posting videos but please one logo is enough...lighten up a bit.

    John-Hans Melcher "TheQuietDrummer"

  • I've been practicing that part from 1:26 to 1:42 for 3 or 4 months now. Still don't have it for longer than 10 seconds.

  • This sets a standard

  • One of the most overlooked and under appreciated geniuses of the drums. Totally and utterly inspiring.

  • No fellow ...

    No orgasm ...

    IS FEEEELING !!!!

    Strongest dynamic range !!!!

This man have a "compressor" in hands ...

So many drummers have "notes" ... only ...

The drum of Jo Jones can SING notes !!!

    That's diference ...

  • Is he having an orgasm?

  • looks that way.
