In the documentary on the great Toscas, she said she sang with every great Cavarodossi of the 20th century--Gigli through Carreras. She said something to the effect of "Oh, I had a really good time!" Wonderful lady! Read her autobiography.
I'm not sure what they are speaking the beginning but believe they switch to German. I'm wondering if Scandinavian languages are "cross-understood"? My mother is German; she can understand Dutch fairly well.
@oceans80 There is a high degree of mutual intelligibility between the four main scandinavian languages (Swedish, Danish, and the two varietes of Norwegian). That's why in the beginning Victor Borge could speak Danish to Birgit, who answered in Swedish. The main differences lies mostly in pronounciation, neither the vocabulary nor the grammar differ enough to warrant any difficulty in comprehension. This is overtly clear when you read the four languages as they are written.
@maruku86 I almost agree;) However there are several everyday words that differ alot when it comes to Danish vs. Swedish and often Swedish people have difficulties understanding Danish.
MET GUIDE TO RECORDED OPERA : "Nilsson is, from the vocal point of view, incomparable/ no other singer approaches her smooth, easy power, her balance & completeness of tone throughout the range, her floating delicacy & precision in the lighter phrases, her on-the button intonation, her brilliance at the top. She phrases with taste & sensitivity, & presents the character with a grounded sensitivity/has a cumulative honesty that is quite moving.THIS IS THE BEST SUNG FLORIA IN RECORDED H ISTORY"
Whoa, it's Victor Borge!
