There was talk at the beginning of this year of closing the stock exchanges for a few days so the hedge funds could liquidate their holdings. Retail investors would have been unable to do anything to protect their portfolios. People would have opened their accounts the next week and found they had lost half their value. Indexes would have been cut down by 50%. It looks like that will not happen at this point.
