As Ugly Betty progressed as a series, it learnt that some things don't need to be verbalised, and that actions speak louder than words. Scenes like this are genuinely poignant and emotional. It's wonderful for a show that was so mainstream to address such a widespread, still heavily hushed issue. Love is love, and love does not choose, and love should never be hated. Moreover, I love Ugly Betty.
Goosebumps! This is sooo cute! ahaha. xD I wish I came out like that but nooo. I came out to my mom when I called her to the basement and watched her cry for nearly 3 hours. :O
Does he really have to come out ? I mean, my gay-dar goes berserk when I look at him... jesus... BTW, I'm gay, I'm not hating... I'm just stating the obvious
@919664 his family did know (hence what betty said before she left to dance and his family smiling when he and austin were dancing), but he didn't know that they knew and before this scene, he was afraid that they would be upset.
i think the point is that it was a non-issue. he danced with a boy, everyone was happy for him, no drama.
@919664 yes, I agree, but he may not see that; well if he were a real person, which he's not, just a character played by an actor. But that aside, I don't know why people are obsessed with other people's sexuality, it seems really odd to me.
@919664 I get your point, so don't take this the wrong way... To avoid hateful replies, remember there's a very thin line between sassy and bitchy. ;)
@919664 1) You are basically implying that gays act differently than straights. You are stereotyping gays. You are marginalizing gays by upholding this ridiculous notion.
2) Coming out is a psychologically liberating process. Just because someone is "definitely" gay doesn't mean that they are ready to be out. Coming out is a symbol of gays coming to terms with themselves and embracing their homosexuality. It has nothing to do with anyone else but the gay himself.
B) I am indeed implying that gays act differently than straights. Prove me wrong, I dare you
C) Marginalizing gays by upholding what "ridiculous" notion? You must be an imbecile if you can't see that at least a half of the gay community is sassy/bitchy and acts quite differently than straights
D) Coming to terms with yourself because you're gay ? That's idiotic, it's like coming to terms with yourself because you are red haired or have blue eyes...
@919664 A) No one gives a fuck and it doesn't give you any leverage on the argument.
B) Uhh no. You claimed that gays act differently than straights. You have the burden of proof. Lemme guess. Black people act differently than normal people too right?
C) Not everything you see portrayed in media is true. Go back to sucking dick.
I will just to react to point C and D of your comment and go do something that is actually productive.
"Not everything you see portrayed in media is true" I did not say that everything you see in the media is true! What I wrote is a statement based on MY experience not the media!
"Go back to sucking dick." that is a very nice thing to say to a 15 year old kid is it... and I bet you do that to so...
"You're retarded." again, not the most appropriate thing to say to a 15 year old... just to prove you wrong, to be mentally retarded my IQ would have to be under 70, last time I took an IQ test my IQ was over 135. And yes really, you are born being red haired or blue eyed and you are born gay so there's no difference... BTW that's where the "I'm gay" gives me more leverage...
@919664 If you're not mature enough to handle being called a "retarded cocksucker" then you need to leave. People will not walk on eggshells to spare your innocence. Get real.
Yes, lots of gay men are feminine and bitchy. But then some straight men are too. But most straight men aren't. And some gay men aren't. You act like you know everything because you're gay. Well guess what? You're also 15. Go do your homework. Open your backpack, open your math book, open your mind.
I cried this is so beautiful, how times have changed I remember when I told my mum she replied she had known since I was four, and that she just wanted me to tell her, and I realised I had wasted all those years hiding from the truth and totally afraid of being rejected.
The unconditional love and support this kid received from his family should be the norm. Every child, straight, gay or inbetween, should be treated with dignity, love and support, to grow to a balanced and caring adult.
Parents who threaten their children with abandonment, or demand they be what they are not, are cruel, selfish and ignorant. Your child is your child. If there is love out there, why keep it away, and give as "reason" that it's wrong?
Hmm... Ugly Betty isn't ugly at all... Also, where and when are these people supposed to be that no one responds to an impossibly cute gay couple dancing with anything other than a smile? Ah, well, that's television for you.
@penguinboi87 Saving yourself for marriage? That's disturbing on so many levels. The average age of women marrying for the first time is 26, for men it's 29. They should abstain until then? Get real!
Most males have experienced 50% of their lifetime orgasms before age 20, though overwhelmingly selfi nflicted. You are opposed to masturbation as well?
Abstaqining from sexual activity is in the expert opinion of physicians unhealthy and in my opinion as a human being stupid.
You weirdos that pour unspeakble on fellow human beings is just, er, in human. People are just people. I'm 45 and its just struck me that I have never danced with a partner at a wedding. I must admit I was a bit disappointed when my 19YO Son ‘came out’ as being Gay, but ultimately I was fully prepared to respect his lifestyle choices.
However, he then started coming out with some crap about being “born this way”, effectively blaming ME & MY SEED for providing a homosexual genetic trait. I’ve no time for that kind of offloading of responsibility, so threw him out the house. We haven’t spoken since & that’s fine by me.
@SuperTruth77 That's because you're stupid, you don't understand what he's going through & I'm happy the kid can move on and be happy with someone that he enjoys instead of your old, grumpy and close minded ass.
@SuperTruth77 If this is true and your just not looking to start a big You tube uproar, Dude its none of my business that is your blood. If something was to happen to him you would be able to llive with yourself knowing your threw him out.
@SuperT the funny thing is that you would be more "responsible" if he was not born gay, i mean would that not mean there was something wrong with how you raised him. If there is a gay gene its on the mother side first and just like the cancer gene its not your fault for passing it on. Lastly what is the male connection with your "seed" as if its a sign of your manhood. the measure of a man is in his actions not his "seed" and by the sounds of your actions your not much of a man.
@SuperTruth77 the idea that homosexuality is a choice is one of the really Big lies. To suggest someone has 'chosen' to be gay suggests that there must have been a point in your own life where you had the opportunity to be gay or to be straight.
The fact of the matter is that those who say they are straight don't believe they made a choice.
The Reality is the same for those of us who are gay.
@SuperTruth77 Congratulation you just killed the relation you had with your son because he is gay. Now come here so I can give you the medal of king of assholes.
@SuperTruth77 Actually supertruth there is no blame, but there is sufficient evidence that shows the mother under times of great stress produces hormones that decide whether the child will be gay. No fault, just nature, and since there is NO GOD, let's say that again, NO GOD there can be only nature. As far as I can tell nature is beyond blame, good, evil and indifference. You need to shit on the whole blame thing, tell your son why he is in error and love him for being natural. Again, no blame.
@888BJSTAR888 I only hate 25% of Americans being one myself. The ignorant religious right wing deserve to be put in concentration camps and systematically exterminated. I have come to that conclusion through a life time of discrimination and a realization that the trash and vermin who would like to do just what I have suggested be done to them will never get any better, and you can not reason with them so why not kill them before they bring the whole country down with them? It's zen politics.
@Bren29 I respectfully disagree, education, unfortunately can not keep pace with the sheer amount of resentment that many of the mentally right wing conservatives have for gay people. It's a numbers game, and the odds are against us, so we have to play dirty. Give me an alternative that incorporates education and then you've got an argument, but education alone has proven to be as useless as a bicycle tire pump without an actual bicycle.
@imaginativelads er..... I honestly didn't mean any offense about "hating americans" check my "^^" it was not seriously said! well I didn't really understand your comment. Hope you didn't get upset. I love americans. Just a bit jealous ^^
Honestly, think half the time parents already know that their kids is gay before they even come out, that's probably why some of them are so calm about it. My brother came out to my mom and it wasn't we didn't already know because of the way he acted. The point is, just go ahead and come out. Some Parents already know that you are gay and some don't support it because they are scared so they really didn't want you to take the next step. But really, many already knew so you have nothing to lose
Why shoudl I trust YOU? After all, you've got no talent at all. You have produced NOTHING and are "sharing" only your obvious jealousies and desperate feelings of inferiority. I can certainly validate your concerns in those respects.
If that were me at my brother's wedding coming up soon, my parents would FLIP!!! As much as it would be an amazing way to come out to my family, I'd probably end up making a scene. Wish this scene could be true for every GLBT!
The kind of support this teen got from everyone in his life is the way it should be for all kids growing up, no matter what their sexual orientation will turn out to be.
The only true sexual perversion is abstainance. If your "faith" teaches you to hate or that love is wrong, question your faith.
@zerogullibility "The only true sexual perversion is abstinence" that's not totally true. There are people out there who are asexual and just have no sexual interest in others. Now, the other stuff about religion, I don't disagree with any of that.
@zerogullibility I totally agree with your first statement, but not at all with your last statement. Yes, if one's faith says to hate love then there is something wrong there, but saying abstinence is a sexual perversion is incorrect. I think what you might be getting at is abstinence forever or at least a long period of time.
I am a Christian and a strong believer of no sex before marriage. Why? One, it makes the first night all the more special. And two, it demonstrates a commitment.
@zerogullibility I don't know which physicians you have been talking to. I even tried (and miserably failed) to find any proof of your statement that they believe it is unhealthy. In fact, the opinions I have found from physicians have been trying to promote abstinence.
I fail to see how saving myself for marriage is disturbing. Please, enlighten me. I am getting married next year so I would love to know if there is something that needs to be done.
@penguinboi87 Perhaps I should have formulated my factual statement differently. The bettr way of saying it would be, masturbation is healthy. Sex is healthy. Like proper diet and exercise, sexual activity is a good thing. Abstaining from something like proper diet and exercise is unhealthy. Abstainign from sex is like abstaining from other healthy habits. Of course abstinance is the only 100% sure way to avoid STDs and pregnancy. Otherwise abstinance is a stupid practice.
@penguinboi87 You never said whether you also believe in NOT masturbating. I know that many professed Christians are big on talk, but not so biug on fllowing their own preaching. I seriously doubt the existence of many "faithful" who actually avoid masturbation. The only adults who abstain from ALL kinds of sexual activity are profoundly mentally challenged, of such low IQ that they simply lack the mental capacity to pleasure themselves. Can you admit at least THAT much?
@penguinboi87 I'm an atheist and I believe that sex with the one you love is special regardless of a contract, ceremony or having mated before. I also believe that no sex before marriage is highly irresponsible. Sex and living together is an important part of getting to know how well two people fit together, and understanding each other. Binding yourself into a life long commitment, before knowing these things, and subjecting children to any problems that arise because of this, is irresponsible.
What a super scene! Oh, those lonely teenage years, I remember them well.

No fault, just nature, and since there is NO GOD, let's say that again, NO GOD there can be only nature. As far as I can tell nature is beyond blame, good, evil and indifference. You need to shit on the whole blame thing, tell your son why he is in error and love him for being natural. Again, no blame.

Austin is so so but so cute.... god I hate americans ^^
888BJSTAR888 1 month ago
@888BJSTAR888 I only hate 25% of Americans being one myself. The ignorant religious right wing deserve to be put in concentration camps and systematically exterminated. I have come to that conclusion through a life time of discrimination and a realization that the trash and vermin who would like to do just what I have suggested be done to them will never get any better, and you can not reason with them so why not kill them before they bring the whole country down with them? It's zen politics.
imaginativelads 3 weeks ago
@imaginativelads - That is not the answer. That would make you just as bad, no, worse then they are. Education is the key.
Bren29 2 weeks ago
@Bren29 I respectfully disagree, education, unfortunately can not keep pace with the sheer amount of resentment that many of the mentally right wing conservatives have for gay people. It's a numbers game, and the odds are against us, so we have to play dirty. Give me an alternative that incorporates education and then you've got an argument, but education alone has proven to be as useless as a bicycle tire pump without an actual bicycle.

burak1417 1 month ago

If your "faith" teaches you to hate or that love is wrong, question your faith.
zerogullibility 1 month ago 112
@zerogullibility "The only true sexual perversion is abstinence" that's not totally true. There are people out there who are asexual and just have no sexual interest in others. Now, the other stuff about religion, I don't disagree with any of that.
pseudonym32 1 month ago
@zerogullibility I totally agree with your first statement, but not at all with your last statement. Yes, if one's faith says to hate love then there is something wrong there, but saying abstinence is a sexual perversion is incorrect. I think what you might be getting at is abstinence forever or at least a long period of time.
I am a Christian and a strong believer of no sex before marriage. Why? One, it makes the first night all the more special. And two, it demonstrates a commitment.
penguinboi87 1 month ago
@penguinboi87 Saving yourself for marriage? That's disturbing on so many levels. The average age of women marrying for the first time is 26, for men it's 29. They should abstain until then? Get real!
Most males have experienced 50% of their lifetime orgasms before age 20, though overwhelmingly selfi nflicted. You are opposed to masturbation as well?
Abstaqining from sexual activity is in the expert opinion of physicians unhealthy and in my opinion as a human being stupid.
zerogullibility 1 month ago
@zerogullibility I don't know which physicians you have been talking to. I even tried (and miserably failed) to find any proof of your statement that they believe it is unhealthy. In fact, the opinions I have found from physicians have been trying to promote abstinence.
I fail to see how saving myself for marriage is disturbing. Please, enlighten me. I am getting married next year so I would love to know if there is something that needs to be done.
penguinboi87 1 month ago
@penguinboi87 Perhaps I should have formulated my factual statement differently. The bettr way of saying it would be, masturbation is healthy. Sex is healthy. Like proper diet and exercise, sexual activity is a good thing. Abstaining from something like proper diet and exercise is unhealthy. Abstainign from sex is like abstaining from other healthy habits. Of course abstinance is the only 100% sure way to avoid STDs and pregnancy. Otherwise abstinance is a stupid practice.
zerogullibility 1 month ago
@penguinboi87 You never said whether you also believe in NOT masturbating. I know that many professed Christians are big on talk, but not so biug on fllowing their own preaching. I seriously doubt the existence of many "faithful" who actually avoid masturbation. The only adults who abstain from ALL kinds of sexual activity are profoundly mentally challenged, of such low IQ that they simply lack the mental capacity to pleasure themselves. Can you admit at least THAT much?
zerogullibility 1 month ago
@penguinboi87 I'm an atheist and I believe that sex with the one you love is special regardless of a contract, ceremony or having mated before. I also believe that no sex before marriage is highly irresponsible. Sex and living together is an important part of getting to know how well two people fit together, and understanding each other. Binding yourself into a life long commitment, before knowing these things, and subjecting children to any problems that arise because of this, is irresponsible.
