@TheVirajster dude, research... vachon was an olympic wrestler & a legit badass. to quote greg gagne, "maddog was........(long pause)... a freakin lunatic!" studd was a tender teddy bear just getting started in wrestling. bigger & stronger than maddog, but not as vicious or as well trained in wrestling.
Unusual thing about this, I watched a lot of videos of AWA matches and very rare was there fighting outside the ring. Going outside the ring was always entertaining as long as it was drawn out to much!
That Heartpunch ain't nothing to take lightly. I'm pretty sure that a guy of 6'9 and over 300 pounds punches you with all his might to the heart would hurt worse than any other move I can think of. I would never want to get in the ring with Big John Studd.
@markyhitch Nothing unusual about that, Christmas Eve the 24th was when they had off but wrestling promotions back then and even today hold cards on Christmas Day.
@markyhitch Starcade was also a huge draw, and that was on Thanksgiving Day (which led McMahon to start Survivor Series on Thanksgiving). Ted DiBiase told me once that holiday shows were always easy high attendance/money draws, because people had off work/school and could come to the shows.
Mad Dog was on ABC's Wide World of Sports one time, wrestling Chris Taylor. Taylor was making his pro wrestling debut and they gave him "The Dog". Vachon bit Taylor's nose and drew blood in the first minute of the match - almost like Maurice was saying "Welcome to da business Kid, let's see if you can take it." Vachon put Taylor over, but made Taylor pay his dues. The ABC announcer (Keith Jackson, I believe) was actually shocked that Vachon would bite in a match.
It's not even wrestling today. It is more about the stupid interviews. Some of the wrestlers today would get their limbs broken if they pulled the crap with the old timers. Old school wrestling still gets the crowd into it.
Problem with todays wrestlers is they know little of wrestling. So to say an old timer would get owned I doubt it. There not in as good of shape thats a no brainer. That would be there biggest downfall.
MAD DOG HA HA WHAT A WOOSE... LUV TO SEE THESE OLD TIMERS IN THERE PRIME TAKE ON THE NEW KIDS TODAY...MAN THEY WOULD HAVE A HEART ATTACT WITHIN THE FIRST 2 MINUT GURENTEED..LOL AND THE STUD..NEVER FORGET THE TIME.. AS A RING BOY i WAKED IN ON HIM AND PAT PATERSON HAVING ANAL SEX EWWW..
love this amazing stuff you find..AWA rules!!!! Any first road warrior matches would love to see them against blackwell/patera pretty sure bundy/blackwell i saw

You didn't want to fuck with Vachon. So no, Studd wouldn't have killed him.

Vachon is a great legend but to me he doesn't sell John's strikes well at all. John however, sold Vachon's real good. IMHO.

I think Big John Studd should have had the honor of holding the WWF Championship. He would have been a better champion than The Iron Sheik.

Where is Iran Sheik??

Wrestling was still wrestling in those days. Yeah, bite his toe, that is completely legal.

Was this the incident where Studd injured Vachon and put him out of wrestling for over a year and eventually caused Baron Von Raschke to turn face?

Studd's always jumping out of the ring. He did it when he fought Angelo Mosca in Ottawa

Studd protected Mad dog's back very well.

Despite wearing the UGLIEST tights I have ever seen in this match, John Studd was an absolute beast. A machine.

@brnleague99 Well i guess he was wearing green tights and red boots because it was on Christmas night. haha
Great match between two WWE Hall of Famers.

@JonathanVonErich Santa Claus wishes he could kick ass like John Studd could in his pre-WWF days. Ask Dusty Rhodes about John Studd's heartpunch.
