I'd just like to point out to everyone who have opinions with horses sleeping laying/standing... You're both right. They sleep standing up in very short intervals (15 minutes or so) then I believe it's every 2 or 3 days they have to lay down to sleep to reach their full ren cycle. None of you guys know what you're talking about xD By the way, that horse... is GORGEOUS!
No reason to have these horses anymore.... they're left over from an older time. Now they are a waste of money and a gross image when they use the sidewalk as their bathroom... seen it more than I wanted to and you can see the shit stains on the street as they dry in the sun. Enough already, let them free. Sure, they look nice, but if you think they'd rather not be running in a field somewhere, then you're just fooling yourself for what? Tradition? It's not about you... let them free.
@BMFstudiosNYC i dont want to get in an argument but i do want to point out that its a hard life for a wild horse. the horses used for mounted patrol are very well taken care of and have a healthy life.
@BMFstudiosNYC yes i meant a hard life in the wild and yes we sort of did strip them of that option but im pretty sure having a place to sleep and eat without worrying about being hunted is the better option...
@ItsTheHood ...perhaps. Question is, how much do they understand their surroundings and circumstances? Because if they don't, then it won't occur to them. People are often driven by their emotions in the current situation and rarely consider what life would be like elsewhere. Animals (since we are animals too) are probably the same.
Whoa, you people don't know what you are talking about. Both my father and grandfather were NYPD mounted going back to the early 1900's. I have been to the stables with my dad and seen first hand how the horses are treated. The officers themselves treat them like gold. They do not sleep laying down. Where did you get that idea from? Horses sleep standing up, particularly these horses. The officers do not do traffic stops with the horses. The horse was playing with his bit, no problem with it.
@RadioReporter01 : Im curious...what makes you think the horse has an issue with its bit? If you knew anything about horses, you might think that the horse was playing with his bit. Lots of bits have copper rollers on them which promotes saliva and also the horses have fun playing with them. But its pretty obvious you know nothing.
I fight for the carriage horses and the abuse they have to take being treated as machines. The NYPD is worse by all accounts, they use the horses a soldiers.
I don't know a lot about horses but I can tell the diff between playing and distress.
@RadioReporter01: no you can't. You just said you know nothing about horses...therefore you dont know when they're sad, upset, angry, worried, excited or content! The horse in this video has his ears flaxed back towards his rider. This means the horse is listening to him, paying the utmost attention. It looks like he's kinda annoyed with people petting him, but not with the bit. He could be a little anxious, so he's chomping a little more than usual. If the horse had his ears flat on his neck...
@RadioReporter01 :Then he would be PISSED! STAY AWAY when a horse has their ears pinned. But ears relaxed back means they are listening, flopping around means their content, totally pricked up and forward means their looking at something and not paying any attention to their rider or driver. ears pricked can also mean they're worried about a danger ahead, this is normally a joined with refusal to go forward and or backing, spinning or just plain not moving.
Same as a cat. I can tell when an animal is stressed or relaxed and the mood. Had to for many years. Don't know about colic and don't need to. Only need to see the horses being abused and recognize it.
I konow a lot about animal moods, don't know veterinary end of it, but if I'm suffering in a hot humid noisy environment, so is the horse.
And I don't have to drag fat tourists around on hard pavement all day long.
@RadioReporter01 Anyone who has first hand experience with horses can tell you that the one in this video is fine - healthy weight, hooves in good condition, respiration rate seems normal, well groomed, tack fits fine. The body language is unremarkable - certainly the horse is in no acute pain or distress. No sweat or popped out veins either, so no prob with the heat.
I can't attest to the training methods of the NYPD, but at the time this video was taken the horse was absolutely fine.
True, but this was their best looking horses, sent out in the traffic of one of the heavily traveled by tourists sections of the city, for no reason but for show
You have never seen these horses on any other occasion I see. This horse had no reason to be here other than to make YT vids showing how well taken care of they are, but they are not.
Cops are bullies in this town and I wish you could see what goes on when it's not a the fanciest horse in a tourist area.
@RadioReporter01 :I don't post on anything that i know nothing about. I don't want to look Stupid. If I am unsure of a subject, i research both sides before i post anything...i suggest you do the same. Dr. Robert Miller has a ton of informational videos and books on Equine Languages. He's just one of many, but if you really want to protest something, you should be well educated on the subject matter...that way you can put up a better fight than the horse had an issue with the bit.

Well that's just it, what is this horse doing on Bway, South of Houston anyway?

I don't agree, a lot of horses are sleeping laying on the ground in the stable. Wild horses used to sleep standing just for the save themselves.

horses don't lay down and sleep.... they sleep standing up

@kjeremy2 not true

Looks like the horse had a problem with the bit.
Poor poor horses, NYC is not a place for them.
I see the cops are worse than the Central Park carriage horse crew when it comes to mistreatment.
These horses don't even get enough room to lay down and sleep.
