So an editing company severely depressed this man and stopped him from making films forever, i have only see Once Upon A Time in America but i plan to watch all of his Westerns, but from the one film i've watched this guy loved film making. Didn't do it for the money, i absolutely adored the feel of that film, i could easily sit through the 4 hours again. I might conclude his last, was his best.
Sergio Leone made perfect films of what the wild west was REALLY about. Amazingly, Italian directors always made perfect westerns. Sergio Leone was definitely one of them.
@DimebagVision The "real West" probably bore little resemblance to Leone's films. However, Leone's salient theme about vicious economic determinism and the violence that accompanied it evinced a refreshingly realistic sensibility, albeit drenched in a highly stylized, deliriously operatic mode.
But the vast majority of Italian Westerns fall far short of Leone's standards, although I seriously appreciate
D.E.P. Sergio Leone wanted to film Once Upon a Time in America but before that the studio's practically bribed him into making another western which he did not want to do anymore as he said that that type of genre was over for him.
Not only did he do one western he did two and when all was over they ruined his "epic" by getting an assistant editor from Police Academy to hack up the story line.
Had it been showed the way it was supposed to be, Once Upon a Time in America would have won many awards.
@JuanMacready Whathas Leone done to you? Leone was a genius. If you don't like his style of films, then why bother watching an interview with him and then call him a talentless fuck when clearly you're the talentless fuck because you haven't made a film.
So many directors now borrow from Leone, it's not even funny. And people think it's all original and hip, yet Leone did it back in the fucking 60's and with all the critics calling him a total failure.
@staphinfection critics dont know anything, i know that leone is considered one of the best but i only wish people recognised him for what he was while he was still alive :( i dont understand why he still cant win an honorary oscar and have them give it to his daughter or something like that, because he deserveres MORE than that
@rampskater0102 I think alot of people recognize him, I know I do, and I'm 15 lol. Me and my dad watched good, the bad, and the ugly all the time when i was 3 or 4. And his work definatley is reflected in films today, especially Quentin Tarantino films.............someday, I hope I'll make movies and do them in that style to remind people that it all started with Sergio Leone cause that man deserves a hell a lot of credit.
@rogerpenna But Kurosawa bought the rights to the book and is based on it. Leone didn't tell Kurosawa or the producers that he was going to remake Yojimbo, which is why he was eventually sued for it.
@TheRealOzzie234 The old westerns with Wayne, Stewart and Cooper were far better than the overlong, boring, badly dubbed crap by Leone, which just ripped off the old movies anyway.
@JuanMacready Howdy Juan!i am old,but i remember Sergio and Peckinpaw as new stuff when i was a kid.Gotta take it in context.Serg grew up under Mussolini.American westerns were banned. He read penny dreadfuls. His movies are an insight to that, like Pulp Fiction.compared to Superman. All has its place,Ol Hoss.Peace be with you, grasshopper pal!
@ROBERTLUCIAn I don't see how your point contradicts mine. "Western traditionalism" is an aesthetic matter with nothing to do with actual history; you don't seem to have understood the term or the point of reference.
I'm very much aware that Leone constituted a creative filmmaker.
@ROBERTLUCIAn I love Leone's radical revisionism; I was refuting the other poster's absurd notion that Leone just "ripped-off the old movies" starred in by Wayne, Cooper, et. al.
Sure, Leone toyed with Western conventions and precedents, but primarily to comment upon them via humor and visual spectacle and to subvert them with sardonic satire and nihilistic violence.
@joekiddlouischama Even though, according to Clint Eastwood, Leone loved to discuss John Ford and American Westerns, the Italian director was never seeking to emulate directors such as Ford and Howard Hawks; quite the opposite.
@JuanMacready That's an awful thing to say. Forget the westerns comment, that's down to personal taste and preference, but that heart attack thing was just low.
Sergio Leone is one of the directors that inspired me to become a filmmaker. Him, Kubrick, Quentin Tarantino, Howard Hawks, Alfred Hitchcock, John Ford, and Steven Spielberg are all my inspirations.
One of the greatest directors of all time.I can see in his work that he studied the Great John Ford's western films but with his own modern style.Sergio Lenone has been a huge inperation to me.Thats one of the reasons i am a filmmaker today.Enjoyed this interview.
Fat fuck or not,he is a master at his art and craft,a legendary director,he is very good at what he doese,i wish Sergio Leone the very best.I enjoyed his films alot...
First of all, we dont have just tarantino, we also have people like Steven Soderbergh, robert rodriguez and others great directors. also, even if I like Leone more than Tarantino, I must say that Tarantino IS original, even if not as much as Leone.
for example, his use of non-linear storytelling was never seen before, the unique use of dialogues and some of his shots are pretty much original.
I said HIS use of non-linear storytelling, referring to pulp fiction, where he puts together some stories and shows them in non-cronological order..
and by the way, you say that tarantino does just homage and nothing new, but did you know that Leone had to pay the 15% of money he earned by A Fistful of Dollars to Akira Kurosawa, because the movie was strongly inspired by his film, Yojimbo?
I don't think he should be named because I simply don't think he's a good director. I liked some of Desperado, and From Dusk Til Dawn is a classic. But the Spy Kids movies, sharkboy and lavagirl and now Shorts, proves how much shit he's been getting out. I honestly don't understand how anyone can allow him to make all this shit. Sin City was OK.
@Em4nu3le You've always had great talent coming from Italy that you can be proud of. Nevermind Berlusconi, you'll always have that incredible talent and your culture with its undeniable impact on the world - especially on America.

Thanks for the upload. I also have a rare interview with the man, filmed by our (Serbian) journalist who interviewed him at Cannes, may 1984. Greetz from Serbia.
