This remarkable film has been re-released on The Criterion Collection, which has always been on the forefront for fine, groundbreaking films. Sadly, though, this was Mark Hellinger's last movie. But it's good to know that this film's influence still remains. Without "The Naked City", there'd be no "Law and Order", for instance.
Produced and narrated by Mark Hellinger, a Manhattan native and Broadway columnist of the 1920's-40's whose upfrontness and kindness remain legendary, still reigns today as the premier "King of New York". The movie, his self-proclaimed "celluloid monument to the city" is an icon of stature that neither time nor later artistic efforts have diminished. Kudos to Director Jules Dassin, Cinematographer William Daniels, and Writers Malvin Wald and Albert Maltz. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

Is a good film. But perhaps "Night and the city"(with R.Widmark,) is much better. The fre-fight scenes are really good.

The film is a wonderful "time capsule" of the New York City of that period. God, I love that place...
