Bullshit. Bridges are not designed to support that kind of extra loads. Besides, because of the vehicle passage and wind, you will have some serious comfort issues like vibrations and noise.
If only designing buildings was as easy as making a shape and cutting otther smaller shapes out of it to make windows. This is the biggest dumbing down of design I've ever seen.

My goodness....Architects always dream...and awed people with incredible ideas...all factors like structural load or wind load can be calculated and checked if the existing structure permits it. well, if it prove to be unfounded, it still an awesome idea to begin with. perhaps when a new bridge that may be built somewhere else, may apply the same design intention and make it happen!! bravo Mr Doug Patt!! i love ur designs!! i am ur fan!!
I think the biggest structural issue would be the observation hanging below. High winds (not uncommon in the Grand Canyon) would hit that and cause quite a bit of torque on the bridge. The space between the girders on the bridge should be wide enough to accommodate nice views. Extending the house horizontally to be wider than the bridge would be an easier option, and the elevator could lead directly to the living area & observation deck! Also, it's very noisy right below the bridge deck!
WELL, I HAVE DESIGNED HOUSING OVER THE BRIDGE ALSO. EXCEPT I DO NOT BUILD ONE SINGLE RESIDENCE OUT ON THE BRIDGE, I BELIEVED IN HOUSING OVER HIGHWAYS, RAILWAYS , AND BRIDGES, LIKE THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA, I NAMED IT "GREAT WALL VILLAGE", TO HOUSE QUARTER OF THE 1.3 BILLION POPULATION OF CHINA. FALLING WATER IS MY MENTOR TO STUDY ARCHITECTURE, BUT THAT WAS 1956. TODAY WE HAVE A SOCIAL ECONOMIC SITUATION, THAT WE HAVE OVER-POPULATION ETC. ............. GEORGE WU, AIA 2010-6-24

There are old RR bridges that are not used anymore crossing the Potomac River just up stream from a small town called Little Orleans, Maryland. Sure would make a nice spot to build you Bridge home. Joe in Florida
Before designing such houses like that, you have to design a bridge that can support it first... provided that it is expected for the bridge to put a house under it before it was made... But if you put a house just for an additional load for the bridge, it would be impossible... The bridge would probably fail. Not the house under it...
you could redesign the bridge slightly to now include the new loads applied,
for example the house could be supported the a new system running each side of the bridge, so that the building structure is not directly applied to the current bridge
Yeah, i agree... that's what i meant... you can't build a house under an old bridge without even redesigning it... based on the video, he did not say anything about redesigning the bridge... what he did was, making a house under a bridge that was already been there... meaning, an old bridge applying a new unstable moving load... i think it went, "CRUNCH"
I love it! Personally i wouldn't want to live on a bridge or under, I would be to scared that it slipped down and crashed to the bottom of the grand canyon. LOL
here in the philippines, illegal settlers made dwellings from scrap ply woods and g i sheets and sometimes thick carton boxes... and they tie em up under the bridges of manila... yer concept is quite a penny away from this illegal dwellings. its been there since 90's
Not to mention where the sewer connection goes. Oh... I see, crap on everyone else. :)

make sure not to invite rossy o'donnel on that thing. Or else the whole house will fall into...
wat river is that?

A few things are against you on this
Market - more eco minded people these days.
costs - It'll probably be a battle to even get this looked at.
fear - for the people crossing and the tenants
Wind resistance and lifespan
What about offending the original bridge designers?

Today's architects needs serious structural engineering courses.

Very cool. Find a way to
a) make sure the bridge doesn't suffer from the added load,
b) PARK THE CAR! and, finally,
c) make me a millionaire,
and I'd be happy to own such a house. Fantastic views, doesn't take up any land not already in use. Bungee jumping from the observation deck?

The bridge isn't designed for this house. The house will compromise the structural integrity of the bridge.

Just out of curiosity, what program are you using to render the drawings and add shade? if you don't mind answering, or anyone :)

Nice idea but what if there was a fire, the only way out would be the elevator which may be blocked/failed, or a set of bungee ropes.

Have fun finding someone willing to put their signiture at the bottom of any of these plans.

bungee jumping every day lol and parachuting. to big of a load to be there thou and that would affect the aerodynamics of the bridge. cool idea

you inspired me to sketch on a house filling the top of the arch under a bridge. the possibilities of views are really overlooked..
