actually, highways are an alternative to landing in emergency situations. thats why when people train for pilots licenses, they are taught IFH. its a recommended procedure; you have to radio in and the airport will notify patrols and they will clear the highway

too much witness is not a bad thing, for insurance purposes. also still unclear if the car hit the plane or something, maybe the driver can give some clue on what might have went wrong, or to better describe the scene.

he was attempting to land at EAA 15 miles north in Oshkosh, but had engine trouble. There is a runway 100 yards to the west of the highway but landing on 41 is more exciting i guess

My son and I were at an air show in Stuart, FL today, and the announcer told us about this incident, so of course, I did a search on YouTube as soon as we got home. Turns out his engine shuddered, he declared an emergency and was cleared into Fond Du Lac, but his engine died before he made the airport, then he damaged the right wing on a road sign, so the end result was replace the engine and repair the wing. Not bad, considering.
