Just to add to the argument and confusion, the way Blow came up with Rap Dirty was when he was thrown on to the Apollo stage w/o any prep - sort of a "Fkuck you" trial by fire to the new guy (Clarence)... so he just had the band riff and he started busting out rhymes. This is early 60's.
"1st rap song EVER'?? Jiggapleez! Even Blondie's "RAPture" came out before Dirty Rap did . Rapture was released in 1980 & is credited as the first song containing rap elements to reach #1, BEFORE 'Rapp Dirty' was released. Even Blow Fly says Rapper's Delight was his basis of his dirtier version he wrote AFTER it (which wasn't in '65 people). Besides, rap has been around in some form or another long before Sugar Hill Gang did it in '79. You're all kidding yourselves if you believe otherwise.
This song was originally released in june 1965. King Tim III and the FatBack Band didn't drop that cut until 76. Funky 4 Plus 1 was the first from the Bronx if I'm not mistaken. Rapper's Delight was released in 78 with Slyvia Robinson as producer.
@thakozhani I think all of this talk about the first rap song ever is unnecessary. Truth is, we'll never have a valid answer to that question. There were so many 'rap' songs floating around from the 60s to the 70s, there's no telling which one was the first. As long as we understand and appreciate the Hip Hop culture/music and it's origins, whatever they may be, that's all that matters. Comments please...
Blowfly had a dual career...he was also a songwriter (if you see anything by Clarence Reid, that was him). he was funny as an R&B singer, too...check out "Send Me back My Money" from 1969...
I remember something my daddy said one night "niggas dicks are bigger than whites", but my black ass was in for a big suprise, that cracker's dick was 3 times my size!
Apparently, King Tim III (Personality Jock) was copyright-registered during the summer of 1979. Rapper's Delight, a song that is thought to be the first rap track was registered late fall 1979. Legally and officially Rapper's Delight was NOT the first Rap/Hip Hop record. Blowfly was not the first rapper for the Rap genre. He did a 1960's word ryme to his music at that time & genre,it's was not rap music. You cannot be ignorant and try to change history!
The history making first ever rap record/song was King Tim III (Personality Jock) done by Rap pioneer Mr. Tim Washington from New York in 1979 Music by The Fatback Band. So many are clueless about this fact in music history. Rappers Delight released months later was not the first rap song/record regardless of it's commercial success at that time. Many would like to dismiss this fact, but you cannot change music history! I was there ,and lived through the birth of Hip hop. It was a fun time!
I just found out about this guy here, it sounds like he was the first. I heard his interview, this guy is outa this world. It started in early 60's but was took to Germany and he had to sue to get credit for the song.
that may be so,however i seriuosly doubt it rappers delight came out in 1979 while rap dirty came out in 1981 in us commercially and obviuosly rap dirty never recieved any airplay hence rappers delight first rap song ever sorry my friend. as i stated before dont get me wrong i love that song its the cut.
I'm just going by what Mr. Reid has told me. I am in Blowfly's band and have heard him say Rap Dirty was the first rap song, thousands of times. Not the first to get airplay, but the first rap song periord. He even coined the term "rap" as well. Out of the 100's of cities around the world we've been to, with the press eagerly waiting to talk with Blowfly, not one of them has ever challanged him claim about Rap Dirty.
Sorry my friend, Clarence wrote rap dirty in 1965, beating rappers delight by many years. Henry Stone told him it was the worst shit he ever heard so Blowfly took it to Austria and Germany and sold over a million copies.
@Moonpippi man I am German and I lived in Austria and haven't heard this song probably before the eighties, no doubt it is a great one, but I also have a promo 12inch from Rapper's Delight from 1977 on Sugarhill Records...UK, yes you read right UK...it's the 15 min version. When I researched I mostly found that it developed on the streets before 1974, which in your case would bring us back to Clarence to be the first rapper but either way guys, let's just fuckin' enjoy those classics....Peace
