Both fall quite short of the sort of conversion rates you'd expect of top goalscorers (25+ %), especially Drogba, so yeah I do think saying they were rather wasteful is justified.

lampard has a killer instinct, he can play a long pass up to ur feet that will create a goal. The number of assists he gets every season is just phenomenal. As well as his incredible assists he scores a lot and each goal outclasses the other.

But he's great at playing the killer pass, which is why he's got the most assists in England and created the most goalscoring chances for 2 seasons running. If you played Carrick behind him to spread the ball around, then Lampard would be free to focus on providing direct assists instead of controlling the midfield, which isn't his strongest point.

@asc0514 Well I think it was a combination of both players, Barry's not a holding mid and wandered upfield too often. Lampard's role for England should have been to keep the ball and stick to the CM spot, there were 4 other players to do the attacking.

But mostly I think it was Capello's error in playing 4-4-2 without the right players in the middle against Germany's 3 man midfield.
