Aw, I can't believe it when people trash Ansuya. She has her own style, is extreamely accomplished, and is totally sweet in person. Not to mention probably the most beautiful belly dancer alive. I belly danced myself for a short time in my teens and loved it. I congratulate you for commiting yourself to this artform.

However, I must disagree with your statement about it. While the dance is certainly sensual, sexuality is a facet of it, as well. Denying that is disingenuous and unhelpful.

But that was not my concern for my daughter. I don't know enough about the dance to know how the moves affect a developing body and whether one should wait for a certain age to begin.

but...Children's point of View of sexuality can be very suprising: When I was 7, my grandmother brouhgt me a lot of days to the church, and my reaction in a few days was to draw a JChrist whith nails in his penis with a lot of womans torturing him with objects and fire. I teach little girls to belly dance, starting at age 8. (I used to teach even younger, but didn't have enough students to maintain) There are some moves that I reserve for teens and up. I have adult studnets now how started as children, and they dance beautifully, and truthfully, they sailed through puberty, with much less trauma than most adult women I know.

Yes, that is my opinion. bellydance is an art form, and can be interpreted differently by different people. this is how ansuya chose to portray it. she isn't a total unknown to the rest of the world, but she may not be as big in other countries just because she isn't from there. and yes, i'm fully aware that there's more in the world then JUST america. ansuya is a wonderful dancer. where she comes from doen't change that. i'm not saying she's THE best, i'm just saying that she's ONE OF the best.
