Okay... so a slytherin would be embrassessed to sleep with a hufflepuff, a Gryffindor would be embrassessed to sleep with a Slytherin, a Ravenclaw would be embrassessed to sleep with a Gryffindor, and a Hufflepuff doesn't get embrassessed because it really doesn't care who it sleeps with, though it may be ashamed to sleep with a Ravenclaw... because they are like the smartest house... and Hufflepuffs aren't supposed to be 'smart' (Stereotype I know).

Just imagine that those cunning Slytherins figured out a workaround of some sort, maybe using a broom or even just Wingardium Leviosa to keep male feet apart from the enchanted stairs. :) Plus, we don't know definitively about the rules in the Slytherin dorms and their stairs/lack thereof.
