@FittyFifty9 well on both side of the dumbbell the dial goes from 5-50 and say you want 30 lbs turn the dial on both sides to get 30lbs take 5 seconds and are amazing
So, When you turn the dials on each side to the same weight, then it will equal that amount of weight? I realize that question may not make sense but I want to know how they work exactly.
i want to do p90x with in a week and need dumbbells... I wish these weren't 350 that's a bit hard to manage even if they last a lifetime. I'm always stuck in the "do you really need it?" situation here and no matter what excuse I come up with the answer is always it's not "needed." so more and more time goes by wasted, as I slowly wrinkle up. but this week ... no stopping.
I just bought these dumbbells off of the bowflex website. I am pretty nervous that they will break quick but we shall see. They have a coupon on the bowflex website right now that takes 50 bucks off the retail price and the stand comes free. So I got the dumbbells and the stand for $384 after tax. Shipping was free. I am pretty poor though so hopefully they don't break in like a month.. especially since I did the 18th month no interest lol..

I just picked these up for 320 shipped directly from bowflex. BOOM. Eat that bitch! WITH the stand. You got ripped, but from the quality of your living room and this review that probably happens alot to you.
each dumbbell is 52.5 pounds...that's only around 25kg per dumbbell, fine if your only using them for small muscle groups. But if you're looking to do shoulder presses, squats and chest exercises that's really not much weight. even for a beginner, once you've reached that weight you're stuck. Normal spinlock/pinlock dumbbells make sense if you're going for the long run. hell of a lot cheaper too.
@darren18061090 that why you get the ones that are 90lb each max and thats 41kg that will last awhile and if your push over that a 2x set of 45 kg is over 200 dollars anyway
These are a cool design but way over priced. Personally id rather have plates that I can throw onto a bar, because you get a mini work out switching out plates and your not limited to just dumbells. You can use them on a curl bar, bench bar etc etc.. Then again maybe I work out more than the average person does so I suppose it would be personal preference.
I'm not gonna crap on your thread but I think these dumbells are crap.. 10 20 30 lbs. and it's still the same length ?? sell this and get yourself a set of power blocks Sport 9.0
I found another dumbbell that is a little cheaper. It's in 5 lbs. increments and goes from 5-60 with the stand for like 330.00 on amazon. Called Turbobell. I got it back in 2008 or maybe early 2009. It's never had any of the weight fall out. I've read reviews of the selecttech with the weight falling out on feet. I can't say for sure that this has happened and I have tried the unit at dicks and liked it but I went with my turbobell and loved it. Plus like I said it came with the stand.
So just so i'm getting it right there's two dials on each dumbbell but if you put both on 20 that's still only a 20lb dumbbell rather than 20 per side?? It would seem to make more sense to just have 1 dial in that case?
With all that money, you could buy a set of dumbells that go up to 50 - 60 kg, probably even more. Possibly even 100 kg on each. You could joina gym for 2 - 3 years.
@freddy692000 you could join a gym, but for the purpose of P-90x, these things are awesome. Everyone has an opinion, that's fine. I just wanted to share with you all how awesome these were, and if you are doing P-90 x they are fantastic. But then again, "To each, their own."
@NyQuiiLx go on kijiji (if its in your area), or ebay, or something. my dad bought me a pair for something like $600 for both. said the guy he bought them from was pretty shady, but still saved over half price. no stand though, but stools work just as well.
Looking at the demonstration makes me think Powerblocks are better after seeing those demonstrated on another video. Those look funky, but they do not look as cumbersome.
For all the people who complained about the size of these bowflex dumbbells, I tested out the gold's gym ones which are basically the same length as these, and I had no problem at all with any exercise, and I am not a big guy at all, 5'7", about 150 lbs. I think the bowflex ones are definitely worth the $!
Just ordered a set of these from the website. I did a lot of research on these adjustable dumbbells. I looked at the gold's gym one in the sports authority store. These weren't bad but looked like the thing on top of the weights to adjust the weight would be easy to break. I researched the power blocks a lot as well but couldn't get past the nerdy ass look of them! It would also be hard to do overhead tricep extensions with one of them. I saw the bowflex ones and had to get them!
Good choice. The Golds Gym version actually broke at Sports Authority when the guy that worked their was showing me how poorly made those were. LOL. It was on sale, but it was perfect timing. The Select techs actually look really cool when displayed in my living room on the stand. People come over and they always like to check it out. Obviously thats not the point of having em, but still nice to get compliments on em.
I bought the 552 set, which is the most recent version that came out in 2009 which went up to 52.5 lbs per dumbell. And yes you get 2 dumbells, not 1, lol. If you are doing P90x you DO NOT need the expensive ones that go up to 90lbs per dumbell.
@fearls1, hey thx man. I was thinking about getting the 1090 set because after a year or two, I can lift like 60's. But my brother said the 552 is cheaper. I got the bowflex 552 dumbbells, and they're awesome, but I got it for around $220. not a bad deal for me.
But for 22.5lbs you'll just need to set both dials to it. I may be wrong, but I really think that's how they're set up. I've only had them for about a week and it doesn't seem like its overall 20 pounds when both dials are set to 10. The weights are 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 52.5
hey i'm interested in buying some selecttechs and the stand as well and am looking to buy it off someone who's selling it through craiglist for 350
i want to make sure i'm getting the newest model when i meet up with him to check out the product, but don't quite know what to look for in distinguishing the older model and the new one.
since you have a set, can you tell me what specific things to look for before purchasing??
i don't want to purchase any old models, i'd spend more for the new one
Seen on the bowflex website : "Our new 2009 model includes enhanced plate technology that prevents any misplacement of the weights back into the base, making your workout experience even smoother."
I think the older models didn't have the red plastic parts. Check out this link for a review of the older model. You can see what I am talking about .
Make sure the weights or the dials don't stick as you turn the dial the change the weight. Sometimes folks will be careless and drop them and there is a spring mechanism inside that helps to switch weights which can break or be knocked out of allignment
Dude that is one of the worst dumbells on the market not only is it plasticy but poorly designed, that thing is the length of the cowboys stadium from end to end and it cost like $500 with everything so you paid way to much and could have gotten the powerblocks sports for that price.
Your entitled to your own opinion. They are lengthy I agree with you there. But its not enough to deter me from owning them. Apart from transitioning weights smoothly while I do P90x, these things look awesome. I actually got a sweet deal on the them at Sports Authority over Christmas, everything including the stand was $400 not $500. I considered the Powerblocks as well, but do you know the what the F&^%$#@ cost to ship weights is? I just drove down to Sports Authority and got em. Started P90x!
@fearls1 what not good about the bowflex is that thing breaks easily because it is plastic made. Why would the company make a dumbell that has plstic components. Powerblocks been around forever and has been tested, made in the us and has lifetime warrant and the most compact, versatile dumbell that feels like a real dumbell.
I would get these if you're trying to get ripped up. 52lbs is more than enough weight for most of the excercises in P90 x. The 90lbers are for those that probably are looking to put on some serious size and through around a lot more weight. They are also very pricey, upwards of 600 bucks easy, plus shipping! If you aren't a big boy pushing 300lbs on the bench, stay with the 52lbers. P90x isnt about throwing around a boat load of weight. Its about Core, flexibility, and overall strength.
Just picked these up myself along with the bench. Absolutely amazing. I too am doing p90x and they they were made for each other. Good luck man and stick with it.
The max weight on this model is 52.5 lbs per dumbbell. There is a more expensive model that reaches 90lbs per dumbbell. This model was more than enough weight given the P90x workout regiment. It of course depends on your goals. For someone seriously trying to gain size, they could look into the heavier model of this dumbbell. I believe the other model is the 1092. These are the 552 dumbbell model.
How are they working out for you so far? I just ordered a set from Bowflex and they should arrive on Monday! I can't wait to use them with my P90X!!!!
so far so good. I stuck with p90x for 3 weeks, steady diet, used the selecttech along with the Iron Gym Extreme pull up bar and my dining room chair. That's pretty much all the gear you need and I've been crushing it. I've seen tremendous results in only 3 weeks of disciplined diet and never missing a day of P90x. It pretty much comes down to planning out your meals for the week on Sunday and doing the P90x every scheduled day no matter what. These dumbbells have been solid every step of the way
Andrew I agree, they do grab at your leg. You can see evidence of this in my video at 4:44 when it grabs at my right pocket. However I don't think it's that huge of a detriment to where you cannot do the motion at all. The Powerblocks are awesome too. What drew me to these was 1)they look awesome 2)easy to adjust, and 3) I got a super deal on em brand new at Sports Authority for $280 out the door. And yes this is the latest model that has been improved over the 2008 model. So far I'm happy w/em
I like the powerblocks, they don't get in the way with p90x exercises. these will grab at ur leg doing a lot or wont let u get full range of motion with some moves, Powerblocks are cheaper and smaller,
Bowflex has there ups too it is easyier to adjust,
Powerblocks have 2x 2.5 removable weights in the handle. so its slower then the bowflex dial system.
But Powerblocks are cheaper and better value for ur dollar.
Good Review..... Do you think This will help ...Im just about to begin with the p90x and wnat to give all I got. I might also get the bands cause of my job send a lot of time time traveling ...Wich sports authoroty did you get them from Iam down un south Florida?
I got them at the Sports Authority out here in Northern Cali. I use them in unison with the IRON GYM extreme Pull up Bar, that is a great addition as well for the home gym. The P90x bands/pull up bar seem pricey through Beachbody. You can get quality elsewhere for less. Good luck with your P90x journey. After you crush the first 2 weeks it gets easier. You just have to be disciplined those first 2 weeks to condition yourself both mentally and physically. It gets easier once you're inthe routine.
