In the early 60's, I heard Bastianini first time, by the radio, precisely in this "recitativo", the prologue of "I Pagliacci". Since It has been for me a reference about what I can expect from a baritone voice. On art, It is very difficult to say "the best", but as I have heard him, Bastianini is one of the best opera singer of the second half of the XX century.

Such a wonderful artist! Giulietta Simionato described his voice as being like "black marble"! So musical, elegant, and such refined, real feeling in his singing! One of my all time favorite baritones.

I was a young man when, listening to Jose Carreras, I noticed that his voice had lost much of its luster. Ironically, I asked my father "Did he forget how to sing?"

My dad looked at me sternly and said "Hope it's not as poor Bastianini!" and then he told me the sad story of one of the greatest baritones of the XX Century, listening at the vinyl with Bastianini perfomances.

Carreras was already ill at that time, but fortunately, he is still with us.

I never read anything written so wonderful and full of loving for a singer.... and what a singer......

Ettore Bastianini come tanti altri grandi come Callas, Del Monaco, Caruso hanno avuto una vita non molto felice..è come se Dio la prendesse in pegno in cambio però di questo genio artistico.

Carissimo, sono d'accordo su tutta la linea: Celletti, critico incompetente lo ha ascritto alla scuola del muggito, di cui facevano parte nientemeno che Titta Ruffo e Lauri Volpi... contento lui... Io amo la voce di Bastianini, il più grande baritono verdiano del dopoguerra
