Superb bit of film-making! The use of old stock gives it a slightly eerie, otherworldly feel, then to throw in the caerdroia / maze / city of turns / Troytown images as a memory of the legendary origins of Britain through Brutus of Troy's arrival in the westcountry, and the Maypole as another ritual (circular) dance is just genius.
What a fantastic film. I'm from Helston and danced the Flora every year during my childhood. I live away now, but try and get back home for Furry Day every year.
If you say that Cornwall is in England then you are English, so you can't be Cornish. Cornish=Kernewek English=Sowsnek. No true Cornishman would ever say Cornwall were in England nor that he were English.... "retard"
@Brythonek I have lived in Cornwall all my life my mum and dad are from Cornwall I AM A TRUE CORNISHMAN i even speak a little Cornish and IT IS IN ENGLAND Cornwall is not a country. It should be i agree but it is not ok.
Honestly, it appears to me that while there are many fine Christians living exemplary lives of Christ's joyous message, there is also a pathetic, disgruntled, disenfranchised element who want only to be against everything that might make some one happy and playful. What miserable, unhappy creatures! They have totally ignored the message of Christ and have fasioned him in their own angry image. I am certain that Jesus would have joined in this happy revel. Maybe someday, they will too.
Cornwall is not English. Even in 1546 "Britaine is divided into four parts whereof one is inhabited by Englishemen, the other by Scottes, the third by Wallesmen and the fowerth by CORNISH peoples" - Polydore Vergil - plenty more where that came from. See cornishnotenglish dot com
Wo I wonder if my brothers are in this? They did the dace back when they were in school. I've always wanted to go to Flora Day but sadly as I live in Camborne I have to make do with Trevithick Day.
The old 8mm footage was shot by my father about 30 years before the 16mm footage. If you are local to Helston, a copy of the film was donated to the local museum after it was produced in 1989.

The editing is perfect... Undertones of the 'Wicker Man' though (not the the 'Furry Dance' is spooky, it's just the way its been edited.

Large sections of the Wickerman were based on The Flora Day and of course Padstows Obby Oss so there are inevitable parallels
