I don't think Jay-Z is overrated. Lyrically, he may be, but looking at the whole package, I think Jay should be in everyone's top 10. He has great mic presence and personality to match his lyrics. Plus he has way more material that's good. Rakim is nice, but his style gets monotonous to me (he's still in my top 20).

I don't think Jay-Z is overrated. Lyrically, he may be, but looking at the whole package, I think Jay should be in everyone's top 10. He has great mic presence and personality to match his lyrics. Plus he has way more material that's good. Rakim is nice, but his style gets monotonous to me (he's still in my top 20).

i bought the original "only built for cuban linx" in like 95, it was a purple tape. i got for like $8.99, and that one album of rae's eclipse's anything jay has EVER came out with. its been way too long for rae, and speaking from a real fan's perspective, true fans of the genre don't appreciate jay's arrogance because of the fact that his whole style is a collage of other MCs, from rae to nas to, of course, biggie.

it's not about being afraid of change. hip hop belongs to and comes from the streets. it's definitely a good look to diversify and give other points of view so that the different classes and cultures of people can see that the genre is limitless. but when u stop promoting the street variety o hip hop, your contributions lose their integrity. let's not forget that hip hop started out as a rebellion from other forms of music . artists have to be careful and not reassimilate.

And what I meant since then is this: I have yet to experience in my family, friends, coworkers, barbershop, the complete circle of want that I experienced when the purple tape dropped...with any album since then. Well, Biggies LIFE AFTER DEATH, and Wutang's FOREVER were close. Tupac's Machivelli got that way only after it was released. Not that classics didn't come from then til now, just the complete feeling of want across the board.

I agree with many that Kingdom Come is some mediocre stuff from jay. I had stopped listening to him after s.carter but started again with the black album. Tight all the way through. But to say Rae isn't a vet. C'mon. OBFCL is probably one of the illest classic albums in hip hop. Infact at that time, I can't remember a more anticipated album. Even since then. It was like a mofo standing in line 2weeks for a ps3 or some shit.
