You're confusing Jesus' reference of signs of His first coming with the signs of His second coming. The Matthew 16 passage was not referring to the signs of Christ's second coming but rather His first coming.

Jesus as the the promised Messiah was right in front of them performing many signs yet they did not discern them but just asked for more signs.

In the Olivet discourse, Jesus Himself listed off many signs and asked His followers to WATCH less He come as a thief.
