Perhaps it was a gimble failure. I started my 172 last summer after a $100 hambuger and the same thing happened. There was no AP on the field I was at and because it was a VFR day I elected to make the flight back with it INOP. As soon as I rotated and climbed to about 100 ft AGL it snapped right back in place. It turned out to be a gimble failure.
