I hope Val is on here somewhere - used to know him and his parents years ago. He would take people apart at 18yrs old. My shodan was from Soke Kubota and I was really young :) great seeing him as a 7th dan and still at it !!
my dad, also from japan trained under this guys sensei, Kubota, ack in the 70s/80s, about ten years ago when i was about 13-14 i had the chance to go and wrestle around with him on the mats; being a teenage boy and seeing a senior citizen before me I was skeptical of his force and effectiveness. Needless to say my skepticism was take away from me, although he was just toying with me
Gosoku-ryu is a very powerful Karate style witch focus on speed. Normally a guy of his size would not be able to reach that speed. But he is using a technique that is perfectly suited to his size, and that is any time he uses a 1,2 he pulls his puch back really hard right after contact. Witch throws his stomach back and foward. then with his body weight moving forword he can easley throw a fast and powerful kick. this method can also be reversed by starting with a kick and then 1,2.
Mijailovic sensei is the real deal. God bless him and Master Kubota. This is true karate at its best, great for competition, realistic self-defense and character development.
he was big and fast yes,.... not many around that era had that combination,... but I am assuming his carreer was in th late 70's and 80's by looking at the footage,..... am I correct in assuming this ?
Val also has a black belt in judo and trains in Japanese jiu-jitsu, you could say he was doing MMA before there was something called MMA. Lots of old school guys trained in many disciplines.
Hi guys I just had to look at this again. My Sensei Mark Kenutzman fights EXACTLY like this great man. Okinawan Shur-iryu. If anybody's in PHX drop in to Paradise Valley School of Karate...this is how we do it. Peace

Holy Crap that guys good, incredibly good at intercepting and setting the other guy up. Unreal timing.Would love to take lessons from someone of that caliber. Shows how the arts work without resorting back to losing your style/form.
It was the August 1998 issue of Inside Karate Magazine - if you can find that issue it has all the names. One of the other names I know for sure is Val's instuctor Soke Tak Kubota.
It's been a while since you request this but i just find this video. I have the magazine and the top 8 traditional karate competitors of all time acording to them are: Tim Baker,Ray Dalke,Tokey Hill,Ron Manchini,Val Mijailovic,Frank Smith,Tony Tullernes and Verne Vaden.
They say "of all time" funnily enough, not mentioned the many Japanese schools more concerned with teaching than show-boating to be included in such tripe.
Those men were great, and that is enough. Making a list and calling people who've never fought other people the greatEST is just silly.
You must be a well trained karateka to make such criticism. You also must know quite a few important figures in karate to make a statement pertaining to the lack of competition this individual has fought. You might want to ask people like Fumio Demura, David Crockett, and Billy Blanks about this person. Oh, and this gentleman used to compete in JKA tournaments in front of this guy, you might have heard of him, the late Hidetaka Nishiyam. By the way, your quotes are very inaccurate.
Very Nice=) Im a blackbelt and a JKA karate student this is very intresting, I love to footsweep just like shihan, but from what I can see I will footsweep even more now that Ive seen Shihan=) klick on me to see my video when Im fighting. Thank you for viewing this great video. Robin Stajerer from Sweden
My friend and teacher. Pure poetry in motion! A truly gifted individual, and the nicest guy you'll ever meet...outside the ring!
