Canada was undefeated and going to win gold. USSR was sixth, out of the medals.

The USSR coach sent his players out, making it a 20-against-6 fight. The Canadian coach had no choice but to do the same. The European refs were useless.

Both teams were disqualified, Canada getting cheated out of a medal because the USSR didn't want to be humiliated. It was something you'd expect from an American team, not the Soviets.

Only a few days before they had been involved in a big pre-game fight with the Americans as well as stuff like Fleury "shooting" the Russian bench after a goal just as Anisimov did recently. The Russians left the bench first but as far as blowing up the game and ruining their chances of a medal, I think the Canadians are just as culpable.
