Holy crap, and here I was thinking it took until Aquarion to have an actually possible version of what Getter Robo did. This not only has that, but it's very very simplistic, unlike Aquarion which was probably rendered in the same way the Transformers movie was.

The Manga is classic getter mindfuckery. The anime is a more lighhearted take on Getter Robo. You can't really compare them as they are far too different in terms of tone and plot.

You know what bothers me? People bashing on the anime because it didn't follow the manga. Yes, the manga is better but try watching it on it's own merits, not based on the manga. I know a couple of animes that deviated from the manga yet still pretty good.

@Irrelevant402 The manga it's based on is very good, but this series dumbs down everything considerably and makes the plot and characterization a jumbled incoherent mess, so much so that they later released Shin Getter Robo vs. Neo Getter Robo as an apology.

@VanDammedia: This isn't Getter G, it's Getter Go. Getter G was the second Getter, also known as Getter Dragon, which was piloted by Ryoma, Hayato and Benkei. Getter Go was the revival series, and was piloted by Go, Shou and Gai. The anime is total shit, but the manga is friggin' amazing.

Getter Go doesn't run on Getter Energy, but on plasma, and its systems are much more realistic than "True" Getters. The manga's actually pretty realistic... until Shin Getter shows up to rape the laws of physics :-p

Everybody hated Getter Robo Go. I dunno of everyone's thoughts on Neo Getter Robo as that is more or less a remake of the Getter Robo Go series. Still, Ichiro Mizuki managed to pull off a good OP theme nonetheless.

If you think about it counting all the Getter Robo their is five of them (Getter, Getter Dragon, Shin Getter, and Getter Go.) Could this be the titles reason? Anyway yeah the composition of the mech is spin offs of other Go-Nagi creations (knuckle bomber=Rocket Punch, Disc Sauser=Ummm crap one of Grendizers moves)

Generally, it seems that while the Getter Robo Go anime is looked down upon as another kiddie robot show behind its time, the Getter Robo Go manga is held in pretty high esteem by those who've read it. It's quite different (just take a look at the character design difference between the anime and manga). Of course, it's difficult to form my own opinion since it's only in Japanese and Italian, but judging from the raws, the GR Go manga is good old down 'n dirty Getter ultra violence.

Actually, the getter Robo Go manga was released in the US by Viz as "Venger Robo". I have a few of the issues.

Oh, I'm aware of that, but since it's one of those typical early 90's Viz releases where they get like partway through the first volume before having to cancel, it's hard to judge the series as a whole from that.

Neo Getter was originally based on a manga Go Nagai made after he did Getter Robo. However the TV series failed because fans complained it was watered down version of the Neo Getter manga

This is a little known spinoff of the Getter robo series. This one stretches for a more relistic feel in its robot, not unlike most 80's robots. I wish I could see more of this. PS. Go and Gai are the getter one and three pilots. PPS. Viz reliesed the manga vertion of this some years back as Venger Robo.
