Yeah I had a coworker who got a degree in philosophy...He said something which made a kid cry, to the utter fury of the father. Got his ass fired. Physics Majors for LIFE!
I here a lot of people that take this major end up being bartenders after college, however I haven't heard of one person that regrets getting that major. If I had the financial stability I would get this degree.
My cousin chose a degree in Philosophy despite the chagrin of his parents and became a bartender and a rock star. Sure, he didn't do anything with it, but he was the most educated damn bartender and rock star you could ever find. He lived life on his terms only and loved every minute of it until cancer took him from us last year. So screw all of you who say it's useless. He did what HE loved to do, which is what we need more of in this world.
@farhan00 I'm actually a double majoring in finance and accounting. I'm not majoring in philosophy, I'm saying it's a very complex study (for those who like to think open mindedly). Any successful business man or who ever it may be always thinks philosophically. Go and learn the meaning of word "philosophy". There are a lot of very well-paid people with degree in philosophy.
Hello I have a few Questions. How long does it take to get a degree in Philosophy. (dumb question) and do you think its feasable to double major in Philosophy and Anthropology. Thank you for your time.
If I major in this and then study Plumbing I will be the most articulate Plumber ever lol. But seriously, shouldn't this sort of thing be in addition to something else like Political Science or Anthropology? I can understand the value of it but isn't a Major in this useless without other disciplines?
its simple , switch the track because 5 people can live opposed to only 1. No, you are not responsible at all because you didn't put the people there in the first place.
Philosophy is a major, which better prepares you for life. Sure, it doesn't prepare you for a particular career, but when it comes down to it, most college grads (aside from those in the medical field) don't stick with the career that their area of study prepared them for. It's a major that helps you make more sound decisions. It also demonstrates to employers that you have the ability to think.
Philosophy major = joke. Let's all argue about the most ridiculous things because we have no other worries in life financially. Just breeds pretentious jokes, like the guy in this video, who regurgitate words spoken by those with doctorates as if they earned one.
@ceelo4 What led you to the conclusion that philosophy is a joke? Was logic used in the process you used to arrive at that conclusion? Or is it just common knowledge that "Philosophy major = joke" ? Are the things that benefit us financially the only things worth our time and attention? If yes or no, why?
@clumpofdirt77 Most of the world does not have life given to us on a silver platter, so yes, the most financially stable SHOULD be worth our time and attention. Philosophy leads to too much importance placed on trivial ideas that are only useful if one wants to speak down on others or consider outcomes of very ridiculous scenarios (really the train tracks with people tied to them?). Philosophy majors come in 2 flavors A) the college student who can't pass science b) rich, no need for finances.
@ceelo4 You are completely wrong. You obviously have no idea what philosophy is about. Your two flavors are soo far off. Philosophy focuses on a love for wisdom not honor and greed. When pursuing philosophy in life it is a life style which people chose to focus on the perfection of their souls rather than gainin riches and learning a bunch of small truths that the sciences provides. Maybe if you would open your mind little to the ideas of philosophy you would realize your portrayal is wrong.
@nbuss14 When's the last time you saw a poor student major in philosophy to earn your so called "wisdom". Gimmie a break. It is a major for trust fund babies and kids who have not dealt with reality or financial struggles.
@ceelo4 what an ignorant, bigot, intolerable waste of skin you are. Real world? Financial stuggles? Caused by whom? For what? Yes such problems to be addressed and dealt with by herds of mindless drone. The world needs philosophy, the world needs philosophers. Look at big shot CEOS, Actors, Artists, Political Actors, Activists, Leaders of ethical committees and NGO's around the world. Yup don't need those clearly. We all gotta aimlessly walk through life commonsensical taking shit for granted

Try growing up without a safety net from your parents and then go pursue philosophy as a major. What a joke. Then again im arguing with a child who lives in canada and spends time with his hair to fit in. Obviously someone far removed from the realities of the world.
@crizackreggaeman Oh and just to add. The financial struggles are created by capitalism and the fact that the United States was built on the cheap and modern day serfs brought in from every corner of the earth. Every single Asian group to blacks were used as wedges against one another to enrich the very few who happen to be your "CEOS, Actors, Artists, Political Actors, Activists, Leaders of ethical committees and NGO's". dude we arent talking about the use we are talking about the worth and the worth is all human...there is nothing more beneficial to the mind than philosophy. Most people major in it when they are planning to do something else, like medicine and/or law , where all the money comes in so stfu and get a clue
@ceelo4 Actually its a very use full major. Many companies take philosophy majors for their developed skills in logical thinking, problem solving and debating skills. The skills that you get from a philosophy major can be applied to many different jobs. Bill Clinton majored in philosophy.... crazy right.
@ceelo4 I'd like to see you tackle philosophical logic, non-intentional analogical reasoning, or Wittgenstein's tractatus logico philosophicus.......It's a highly respected academic degree.
@ceelo4 Do you think that "The train conclusion" is a joke? Think again. Med school will ask: Who would you give an organ? To a child, or a mother with two children? Finance: Would you put taxes to increase money, or would you do something else? Why? Questions like that save you to take a career or doom you. I had questions like this, and thanks for study some philosophy, I got them right. Moreover, the reason with have dumb politicians are because there are no philosophers there.
@philobiology it is a joke. morality is subjective. there is no right and wrong answer. you didnt get anything "right" you just agreed with whoever asked you this question.
@ceelo4 Oh, I know is subjective, but then how can you apply that to the whole world to be organize and protect every citizen? You can't. For that is ethics, where they turn into laws. So you are saying raping is not wrong nor right? Hmm, therefore you inferior to me as well? You see, that the problem of relativism. No, there is a basic concept on philosophy that refutes you, and that is the Socratic method.Philosophers don't agree completely with other philosophers, and that's how science came.
I'm going into college this year, so I'm starting my applications. Can someone please tell me what are some "good" majors to double-major with Philosophy? I'm thinking of Political Science/ Sociology or something. What are some recommendations, I'm thinking "practical" ones, ones that can get me work experiences... this is all very abstract but please help!
@doodlesxlove Just about any field will benefit from a philosophy double-major, especially the ones you listed. If you are interested in that particular area of study, I would definitely say go for it. Because philosophy is such a broad topic, the skills you learn there can be applied to nearly anything you want, whether it be the social sciences, physical sciences, linguistics, business, medicine, and law, just to name a few. Go with what you enjoy and philosophy will most likely help.
The degree does not make the person, the person makes the degree. So don't blame your lack of job's on the degree you get. I give a thumbs up to philosophy.
my stepsister has a degree in this and what does she do? shes a retail manager... something you dont even need a degree for. You might want to stay away from this major. if you want a degree in liberal arts major in political science. it will give you better prospects
@TheTwistedinnocence so are you saying because you know one person who has a degree in philosophy who does not have her desired job that everyone should stay away from philosophy?
philosophy is kinda underrated. i think its the best education one will ever get in life. developing critical thinking skills not only desires in truth but also its alot of fun.
Philosophy is the most useful major you can do at University.
Yes most jobs won't hire you with a philosophy degree but most employers who require ANY BA degree look favourably on your resume. You may have to take another diploma or associates degree to get specific skills like mechanics, computer science etc, but the fact is if you want to get smarter and get a specific skills such as THINKING LOGICALLY philosophy is the way to go.
Yes, I studied some philosophy (and continue to do so mind you) and it's helped me to a good extent in my chosen field of web development. As one might imagine, studying propositional logic and aesthetics is a good way to conceive of tricky programming paradigms (oddly enough, a biology degree might have been equally helpful with regards to programming) and the value of the USER EXPERIENCE.
There is a down-side to thinking philosophical. Almost know one else does, so it could be rather intellectually- isolating, lest perhaps going to a really good university.
hey im gonna be goin into my 1st yr of BA this yr in sept.....but i still cant decide what to take as my major and minor.....any suggestions...oh nd im gonna go into law aftr BA
Thats up too you. Now as i can see your a person who cant make up his or her mind. sooo i would say just before making that chosse then find your intrest and persue it. Here is somthing to think on "Real success is finding your lifework in the work that you love"
If I was to major in Philosophy, would my classes be dominated by hypothetical situations? As someone who values a straight answer, I would love it if I wasn't always merely giving an opinion.
@macluca1 I am continuing on to do my PHD in philosophy and I can assure you that if you attend a reputable University (college if you are American), the subjects that you will tackle in philosophy are practical. You will find yourself studying phenomenology (the study of things as how they appear to us) and so on. Philosophy these days is about critical thinking and not so much about unanswerable questions. I hope this helps.
I'm pursuing a philosophy degree. I have a scholarship that states I have to have an Exact job goal. I said I'm going to run a multi-million dollar business they say. How? you have to have a business major. I laughed. So I must find a job that in exact for a philosophy degree. I need some help. Any Jedi masters out there to answer my question? THANKs
I wish i was a philosophy major, i took a philosophy class as an elective during my senior year in college and i've been working for the past 2 years and cant stop thinking about that one class i took, i want to go back to school for it but i already got a bs degree in something else. too late? and what jobs can i get?
i'm pretty sure you can do your grad work in philosophy. you'd just have to go back and take some prereqs for your upper division. talk to an advisor.
If you're ambitious, lawyer, if you'd like a rather easy good job philosophy translate well to Librarian (though you'll probably have to do another year of school).
@formymind i will be completing my degree is psychology in May and you know what the same thing just happened to me. I took a citical thinking class and fell in love. I am now going stay in school and pursue a philosophy degree now too. It will help you in any job field. I would say if you love it go for it.
from India i love this subject and if there is Recarnation than in all my next births i want to study Philosophy, i love this subject so much.i am also an amateru astronomer.
@imundiath go be a plumber. they make good money. if i went to college i would head right for the philosophy dept. or be an english nerd. for me. not a paycheque. so for all you in philosophy or some other "useless' field - enjoy! you lucky dogs
Ah yes, the classic response to the popular, "what to do with a philosophy degree" question.
The gist of this answer is as follows: Nothing.
That is, nothing in the job market, but you grow as a person! You'll know how to live! One of the things you will learn from studying philosophy is how wrong that answer is. My answer?
"To teach how to live with uncertainty, yet without being paralyzed by hesitation, is perhaps the chief thing that philosophy can do" - Bertrand Russell

@amotisi8859 You must be a tenured ivy league professor of philosophy or a lawyer. I'm gonna go with lawyer as just a lucky guess.

So you call getting into Law School useless? Philosophy prepares best- teaches you to think logically! take it from me. I'll see you in court! lol.
