  • You rendered it wrong... you had the option to render it in HD too... why not?

  • best HD I have ever seen!!!!!!!!

  • /watch?v=R8u5XAzknO8 here is example of how should look like quality with low weight from canon HG20

  • Let's review your title: Canon HV20 High Definition HD Videocamera Test Footage.

pretty sure HD means High Definition, so...Canon HV20 High Definition High Definition videocamera...

haha other than that, nice job

  • Dude or Dudette, I did that for keywords; some people search using "High Definition" spelled out, and some search using the abbreviation of "HD."

  • @JeepsterGal either way this is not HD

  • @JeepsterGal I know right!

  • @dreamdemon99 You're a douche bag, but that's actually funny...lol

  • great locations...really jealous. makes the UK suck even more...

  • dude, you think the UK sucks, you should try Kansas. Hey look...a cow.

  • Comment removed

  • HAHA!! XD

  • ROFL I ROFL'ED !!!!!!!!!!

  • I too plan on having an HV20 in the next week or so. Nice video.

One question to ask. The panning of the pine trees looks a little jittery. Is that from the interlacing or just the video compression getting it uploaded to Youtube?

  • @iowabucks Looks more like a cheap tripod to be honest.

  • ......

  • Wow. This makes me more excited about buying this camera, and i´m going to! Even though it´s expensive. This shows that it´s worth it! Thanks for charing this video with us! :)

  • .......

  • nice :]

but it is not HD :/

  • my pc can handle HD.... i have seen may movies in HD BR disk.... i am also a fan of HD gaming ...

  • Question. Is this footage right out of the box? No settings or attachments?

  • Correct. It's on Auto, literally right out of the box.

  • If thats the case, this is worth every penny and then some...Thanks for the low light and pan and zoom shots...makes me really want to get this camera!

  • I have this cam too.. what kind of software did you use... - Marc A

  • Final Cut Pro on a Mac

  • ..But of course.. my PC fails me again.. :(

  • lol

  • man, great images and great music but best is the emotional content! you nailed it! making my heart vibrating!

  • Can you pause it and then hit pause button again to film a new scene? Because i had a JVC mini hd camcorder and you couldnt do that. it saved them as clips after i hit pause button.

  • PLZ, man. All you needed to do was boost the contrast with a video editor. That's a secret to apply a film-look.

  • Way better than my cam...i suck.

  • This shit is old school! The Panasonic HDC-HS100 shits over all Canon!!!

  • i wana say "yyyeeehhhaaa" to the music

  • What is the name of the music used in this clip and is it Royalty free or cc??

  • Hello, it's on my Mac, just a royalty free song in iMovie.

  • Thanks, i'm sure ill be able to get hold of all the songs that come with imovie.

  • ??? for all... Is the HV30 worth getting over the HV20 for a bit more in price?

  • not from what I've heard..

When i went in to purchase the HV20, the clerk helping me out was admitting that the HV30 is just there to take the place of the soon-to-be-gone HV20. It's basically same camcorder with new paintjob and few more buttons.

  • They could have done so much more, focus ring, better viewfinder, better hand strap, etc.

I'll tell you, if a Canon HV40 comes out next year with all of those improvements I shall be most upset indeed.

  • wow, thanks to the huge compression of the video, the details just jumps right out!!

Sucks, cuz the camcorder is quite amazing!

check out VIMEOdotCOM for higher quality vids of this camera!

  • Thanks for posting, really good quality.. Is it hard to edit the footage in the pc? do you need a powerful system?

  • its kinda hard depending on the program u have, i use sony vegas 8 it is one of the best editing programs, it is confusing to use at first but i watched vids on how to use it and now i understand it.

  • thanks, im thinking of purchusing one of these

  • sorry to give ya some bad news, but good luck finding an hv 20, they don't make them anymore. The hv 20 is being replaced by the hv 30, almost the same camera, but more expensive - and a different color. So if you want one, you're going to pay more.

  • Theres several places over here that have hundreds in stock (england) £570 now thats not bad. So im gonna catch one quickly

  • B&H photo still has them

  • buy one off of amazon they should still have it and it should be cheap but still new

  • I ordered it of amazon yesterday... :) Im soo excited. I cant sleep!!! :) £575

  • im looking for one off ebay. hear there gd.

  • Must look awesome, too bad youtube quality blows

  • To improve that situation, after the & in the url put "fmt=18" (no quotes). This is a little secret that puts you in HQ mode.

  • it looks even better with youtube quality

  • What settings did you have the camera on for the low light settings in the tunnel?

  • I didn't have any setting on for the tunnel scene. It was on automatic the entire time.

  • I got an HV20 on New Years day. It's great!!! I love it!!!

  • Looks great. I can't get the same quality in H.264 using Premiere Pro CS3. It's encoding HDV into 30 FPS 320x240 square pixel, VBR one pass. The results look terrible on YouTube after they reprocess. Can someone suggest encoding settings?

  • there is an option to put &fmt=18 at the end of ur URL to see it in full quality

  • Beautiful. I'm glad you recorded this, I genuinely enjoyed it.

  • Thanks, it's a great camera. I've had it a year now and I'm still happy.

  • Thanx

  • Hi I use Avid Express pro will this camera work with the software?

  • Sorry, I have no idea! But I'm sure you can get your answer at the hv20dotcom forum!

  • If I had $800, this camcorder will be in my possession.

  • Actually, you can get a reputable deal on one for around 650 now.

  • wow

  • Thanks for posting! I've had a hard time finding HV20 footage on the web. Beautiful ... the pine cone/tree took my breath away. Thanks again!

  • pretty nice

  • how big are the files? im really considering getting one.

  • The files are not bigger, but difficult to work with, depending on what editing program you use and the power of your computer. I am not working much in HDV right now because I don't have a HD burner. You can get some good info from the Canon HV20 forums.

  • i have a 2gb dual core macbook.

and i use final cut pro and adobe premiere CS3 to edit videos..

    does it have firewire?

  • Yes it does.

  • You know, displaying modern HD camcorder footage on youtube is like listening to a CD over a cell phone. Youtube is many things, but it IS NOT A VENUE FOR DEMONSTRATING VIDEO QUALITY!

  • It can demonstrate the very impressive depth-of-field this camera gives as well as the zoom and low-light functionality. It's not ALL about the HD part.

  • what song?

  • Don't know, sorry, it was an Apple loop on my Mac.

  • what song?

  • What form of compression was used for this video?

  • Quicktime, H.264 codec, 15 fps. That's about it!

  • why 15 fps?

  • I always do that to get it under 100 mb and so it downloads quickly.

  • clever , and i guess youtube converts it to 30fps when they put it into flash player video. Thats very clever man, good job.

  • There isn't a lot of panning or motion so he can get away with a lower frame rate.

  • it was shot in 30, droped down to 15 and brought back up to 30 for yutube, yeah i guess ur right.

  • I'm pretty sure I want this camera, but I don't have an HD TV or monitor (yet). Do you know if the video quality is still really good when viewing it as standard definition?

  • Yes. I shot some HD footage of a lake and then downconverted it to SD and put it in on a DVD and it looked wonderfull. The colors are very rich and the detail is incredible. You should get it or an XH-a1.

  • I would rather get the XH-a1, but I can't afford it. But thanks for responding. It's good to know the quality is still very good when in standard definition.

  • Excellent. Very impressed with the quality, especially the dark tunnel.

  • Advice on where to purchase, if you bought it retail??

  • Bought mine at Best Buy because I got a great deal at the time. Amazon may have better prices now. Good luck!

  • this HV20 camcorder is friggin brilliant, did you use a 35mm DOF adapter for these shots?

  • No, didn't use anything for these shots.

  • This was wonderfully shot! Especially for a test/demo video. Thanks a lot, because this really helped me in deciding to buy this camera.

  • You're welcome! They've now come out with the Canon HV30, with does not have many more features than the HV20 but has extended battery life. Most people are saying it does not have enough new features to upgrade from the HV20. You should find the HV20 for $800 or less now, as the HV30 is listed at $999. Good luck!

  • The HV30 definitely does not have enough features for me to buy

  • Oh my friggin God I want this camera.

  • dude im getting this

  • Hey what song is that?

  • It's a royalty-free song Apple provides with iMovie...sorry, I have no idea...it's nice though, eh?

  • yeah it is

  • will sony vegas pro 8 editing software be sufficient for this camera?

  • look like it should be on the travel channel haha 5 stars

  • Thanks! LOL

  • Hmm, I kinda like the zooming in and out.

  • Did you film that using the 24p Cinema Mode?

I'd suggest you drop the zooming in and out for a more cinema-ish feel.

But still, great video and excellent test :)

  • No, I didn't shoot in 24, this was my first day with the camera. I zoomed in and out because I was trying to show the zoom abilities on the camera, as I was purposely filming test footage to show everyone.

  • hey, how much it cost im looking into buying one.

  • I paid $1200 when it first came out but you can find them way under $1000 now.

  • Yeah, unfortunately 4.5 does not edit HDV. That's what I had and I had to upgrade to FCP 5.

  • Great Footage!

i'm a mac user and i have Final Cut Express HD 3.5

is that the one that you have or would i have to upgrade to a NEWER one to get this camera to work on it? Also, did it come with the firewire cable or did you buy it separatly?

    PS: good music

  • Hello! You need Final Cut Pro 5 to edit HDV footage natively. I believe it DID come with a firewire cord, too. Enjoy the camera!

  • I edit HDV from a HV10 on a Mac in iMovie 6 with no problems. You don't have to have FC to edit HDV.

  • Yes, I know you can use iMovie, but he was asking if he could edit using Final Cut Pro 3.5 or would he have to upgrade and if he wants to continue using FCP then yes, he has to upgrade to FCP 5, is what I was saying....

  • does fcp 4.5 able to edit hdv... i know there is a 4.5 hd version but ive used both and they dont recognize... im kinda answering my own question but i dont have the money to get fcp5... i got a boot of 4.5 heheh

  • It came w/ a USB, Not a firewire, though there is a firewire port. Of course firewire is the best way to transfer. HV20 RULES!

  • i use adobe premiere 6.5 for editing and i was thinking about buying the Canon HV20. i have never edited in high def and i was wondering if there would be any difficulties with an HD camera and my software.

  • Hello, since I'm on a Mac, I don't know the answer to that. You'd have to go to the Adobe Premiere web site and make sure your version is capable of handling the HDV footage. I know my previous version of Final Cut Pro did not handle it and I had to upgrade when I bought this camera, so it's definitely something to look into...

  • music is by john fahey?

  • NICE. got the HV20 for Christmas. can't wait to use it.

  • beautiful.

    Where is this?

  • Colorado Springs, Colorado!

  • thanks for the video.

  • thank you for posting it. nice camera indeed. at low light it is very good.

  • nice vid! im getting this camera in april cant wait :D, also whats the name of this song? I love it :D

  • Great footage, you have me convinced on the HV20. Good Job

  • Wow! Nice footage! I'm in the process of buying this camera even as I write this. I found the HV20 from B&H for $750. I was unsure of how the video looks, but after watching this clip I made up my find: I like it!

  • I am also considering buying this camera. I was checking it out at Circuit City yesterday. Have you bought yours yet.

  • Me too. I'm considering buying this camera sometimes in 2008.

  • Hi, 750$ seems a good price for HV20. Over here in Italy cheapest i found is 740 euros, more than 1080$ :(

Seems a good product to me too.

  • Try importing it from the US then..

  • Thanks for the video; I was in confusion between HV20 and sony hdr hc7 ; I would definetely go for HV20.

  • So Awesome...Thank you for your videos. I really wish I could move back.

  • i just got i just got 2000 dollars im going to buy this camera!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks for posting!

  • Really great, thanks for posting - I had no idea YouTube could display such good quality! Now I want to learn more!

  • That's amazing footage! I'm getting mine on Christmas! But it's getting delivered tomorrow!

  • Good Camera, Good picture Quality for Youtube I will think of it too. Pls send more of Video to Youtube

  • Thank you for uploading this! I've been having a really hard time looking for a new camcorder and I've been on the edge of whether to go with a Sony or Canon. And my natural instinct is Canon and this proved it to me! Thank you so much!

  • thats amazing, i really want that camera now!

wat edit do you use? and does it take up lots of space on ur computer?

  • I edit using Final Cut Pro on a Mac and the HDV does not take up any more space than Standard def. It's a great camera.

  • wow it looks amazing! i've been researching it on the internet, coz i've been looking for a new camera for a few months now. and i heard this one was good! also i read that the joystick is really small, is it annoying to use the joystick? wat are some disadvantages with this camera? just curious :P

  • Hey! I have the HV20 now!:D It's awesome!!

but how do you get it onto your computer? usb? firewire? cause my usb doesn't work some how..my computer doesn't reconize the camera..can you help please?

  • Hello! I have a Mac and use Firewire. Are you on a PC or Mac?

  • PC, windows

  • I'm getting my HV20 tommorow!:D

  • Whoa, the quality is absolutely breathtakingly AMAZING !

  • nice quality WOW

  • My mouth is watering.

  • You wouldn't expect any difference between SD and HD here on YouTube but I can see the difference in clarity - maybe I'm deluding myself though!

  • See if you can saturate & contrast the colors. The colors are there but hidden. Periurban's(periurban) video,

My Father's Garden, My Mother's Piano (music), will show what can be done.

  • I`ve been shopping around for this camera but it`s been discontinued..just have to keep on shooting on my trusty old betacam.

  • Hi, it was just released in April 2007 and is still showing up on the Canon web site. Where did you hear it was discontinued?

  • On the canon site. maybe the uk market didn`t live up to hype, who knows.

  • got mine from amazon, just the other week

  • There a new Canon HG10(hard drive based) coming this october that can top the HV20 which also has the same features but better storage than minidv. I guess Canon wants to copy the concept from its competitor JVC and Sony to improve its product.

  • BEWARE, the HV20 is NOT A 24P CAMCORDER!!! Fraudulent! It only records 30 frame INTERLACED to tape. Must use third party software to extract 24fps, but every fourth frame will still have interlacing. I own one, and most reviewers are not paying attention.

  • rendering hd video takes a while , right?

  • Depends on your system I suppose. I don't notice a difference on my Mac G5.

  • Who cares about 24p? You wouldn't shoot a movie for cinema on this camera!

  • A LOT of people and pros care about 24p and shoot features on consumer cameras like this. It is the reason they buy this camera. But it does not actually record 24p. It is false ad.

  • Great video! Am shopping around for a camcorder and your comments and movie helped me decide on the hv20! Nice background music too!

  • Cool. How did you get it to look good on YouTube? Normal video that looks good gets cooked by the converion process. I thought they reduced to 350xsomething and then displayed as 425xsomething. For format and size do you upload?

  • What was the soundtrack to this please?

    i like the footage

and for imovie its not a bad edit

    well done =]]

  • Hi, thanks a lot for your comment. This was my first attempt at editing in iMovie. I normally edit with Final Cut Pro but this new HDV camera won't work with the version of FCP I have, so I'm using iMovie until I get the new FCP :) The song is "Tumbling Waters" by Steve Wiseman. The album is "Rhythm of the River." ( stevenwiseman dot com )

  • thanks alot man

this movie has inspired me to an edit myself of the grand canyon when i go down in about a week

    thanks

    muddy

  • Definitely let me know when that is up...I've always wanted to see the Grand Canyon...would love to see it in HD even if it is compressed for You Tube :) Have fun!

  • Is your video in HD mode, what software did you use?

  • Yes, it's in HD mode and I edited this with iMovie.

  • Is there a software that can support HD? I like to know.

  • did you took the video using that 25p feature? PLEASE compare both and upload to tube. It will be definitely the most important video for many of us.

  • holy shit! that looks awesome and this is in youtubes crappy compressed video output. really good, i wanna get one, little bit expensive in australia though :(

  • wow even though youtube craps up videos still looks like a 10,000 dollar camera

  • the wide shot at 2:20 i would like to see full quality. You got a high res link?

  • Sorry, I sure don't. I didn't keep any of this footage; was just testing the camera. The high res quality is amazing though.

  • I'm interested in buying this camera.

I'm only 16 and I want a good camera that will last me longer than a cheapo 500$ camera from Best Buy haha.

Are there any major problems with it?

I'll be using it mostly to film short films and for fun as well.

  • Hey Eric! The camera is fantastic, my trouble is that I don't have the proper version of editing software to edit with. Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 will not recognize my camera, I have to upgrade to the next version, which has been an added cost. But I have no complaints about the quality of the camera, I'm very pleased.

  • I have the newest versions of the Adobe programs; Premier Pro, After Effects, etc. Will it work in those programs?

  • Sorry, I wouldn't know, I only know Macs. If they are the newest programs, I would imagine it would though :) Good luck and happt film making!

  • i tried with premier pro but HD wont recognized by the program unless you changed to DV output. so i stuck with sony vegas.

  • What do you mean by change to DV output?
