Next time when comet hysteria hits youtube, like it did with Elenin and YU55, point them to 13:00 of this video. Like Carl says, fact will reassure almost nobody but still, it's fun to go back the day after the proposed doomsday and rub their faces in it.
This show aired in 1980 but it showed the Chernobyl accident which didn't happen till 1986. And the Exxon Valdez spill which didn't happen till 1989. Who edited this?
@xAntoIRL Because many young children are indoctrinated into religious beliefs that teach them to blindly follow thousand year-old myths, and asking basic questions like , "is god real" is considered a lack of faith and the penalty for that is eternal damnation.This will continue to happen as long as mankind is afraid of death and the unknown. And as long as churches and other religious fanatics continue to make huge sums of money from the poor, uneducated peoples of the Earth.
@Jtosar77 You nailed it. In many ways we are still living in the dark ages. The big difference today is that we have unprecedented access to information, such as this YouTube clip I'm watching now. Hopefully this new freedom will make us smarter. But sometimes I wonder, because bronze age religions are still so powerful. And as you said, it's because of our fear of death and the unknown. At least science tries to probe the unknown. Religion looks blindly the other way, does nothing and says pray
Religious people, namely the Abrahamic faiths, seem to be trying to make their end times prophecies a reality. And seeing as how their numbers are so overwhelming, forget about it. And even after lighting the fuse themselves, when everything's blown to smithereens you can be sure there will be more survivors in the "goddidit" camp than ours and they'll all chalk it up to "God's will", even as their gas can and matches lie at their feet.
It's sad...I see a lot of atheists becoming more aggressive, dare I say militant, with their rhetoric. I understand where you're coming from but this kind of talk always leads to more of the same...religion is not to blame for all of the misery of the world and to simplify all of humanity's problems like that is willful ignorance and an unwillingness to address the deeper, darker parts of the collective human psyche. It's finger pointing and that never goes well.
its too late. people arent going to change until the last minute. within 50 or 60 years our resources will have dwindled to almost nothing. the population will have gone out of control and then everyone will take this seriously.
I wish everyone was able to see this. To fully understand what we are doing, to let go of out ignorance towards the earth we live on today. For this is our only home in the vast emptiness of space.
Best TV series I have ever seen I watched this when I was a young boy 32 now and still awesome

@Lunargolfball
Not sure who exactly but I'm pretty sure Ann Druyan owns the copyright and holds the last word on what's put in or edited out.

Also, Sagan didn't die until 95', so he could have also made the revisions.
