I realize that the song is all about shaking the blues AWAY, but it always annoyed me that she is wearing yellow in this number. Brava for doing all of her famous fast-tapping turns without tripping on that awkward excuse for a skirt. :-)
This is one of my Favorite Tap numbers and performances in this movie. She had the fastest tapping skills at the time, and honestly is an inspiration to tapping!
This is just CLASS. Ann Miller could do 100 steps per minute. Now, that is pure CLASS and no, they don't make 'em like that anymore and people,,,,think about today's stars. Yep, no comparison is there.
that's heartbreaking. =( wow, I had no idea. .she's a trooper. She really loves what she does. .or did. .and she definetly put her heart and soul into whatever she did whether it was acting, dancing. .or singing. *sigh* She's a knock-out. =D
Yes,Judy Garland, The most amazing about this performance is that Ann fell or the stairs a week or so before filmimg this, she put on a corset a did this, she said,I have to be in that momie,I have to dance with Astaire. That,s commitment Wow
I know back then people in musicals could actually sing and dance, nowadays if they actually do make a musical, they just get a-list actors that aren't very good singers or dancers, certainly not on the level of the likes of Astaire, Garland, Kelly or Mrs. Miller here.
I love Easter Parade for Ann Miller, Fred Astaire and ofcourse Judy Garland. Such a great cast and a film that cheers you up. Ann Miller seems like a really cool lady from her interviews I've seen of her.
So much style, so much flair. She really knew how to "sell" it. These are so great! You watch dancing like this, and you feel it in your soul. It's really happy stuff. I love it. Thanks.
What makes this even more remarkable is she is doing this number in a lower back brace under her costume. Her back had been injured when her first husband knocked her down a flight of stairs while she was several months pregnant (she did lose the baby). Her story on the Biography Channel is remarkable, if you ever get a chance to see it.
To addiefleur below: You're absolutely right, Addie. Doris' rendition, which came years later, is anemic by comparison, but her SINGING is just great in it. This version by Ann Miller is "Just It!" When movies had class, style, appeal ... SIGH! We'll never see the likes of this again, folks. Thank God for these clips. Peace.
i HATED this song when i heard it the first time; i wanted more Judy! but the more i watched it, the more i LOVED it. now its prolly my 2nd favorite song on this movie.
Once you have seen Ann Miller do this number, it is almost impossible to watch Doris Day's version of it in "Love Me, or Leave Me."
Ann Miller is here by herself and WOW! In Doris Day's version they make a big production number out of it and it doesn't help a bit, it doesn't have half the style or zip.
(not that Doris Dayis not fine in her other numbers from that movie-so don't yell at me)
its so funny to take something like this and put it up against lets say High School Musical. I mean its the future, shouldnt we be getting BETTER? lol.
Movie stars were so much more talented then than now! And I think they enjoyed it more then too. You can't fake that excitement. Now it seems like the singers try to be so cold and domineering towards the audience, or else dance like it's a striptease. Not to be negarama but it sure makes me enjoy movies like this and stars like her! Every time I see Ashlee Simpson in the cover of anything I have to close my eyes, you know?
Thats so true!!!! Those days they were able to have tons of sex appeal without screwing half of the audience lol.....
In my personal opinion real entertainment died in the 70's. but we have a few diamonds in the rough now like Moulin Rouge, Victor/Victoria, Chicago and The Producers.
I'd say give it another 10 years before the golden age of musicals returns
I agree with everything you said in your comment. Every once in awhile, we get a treat at the box office and a talented artist who can sing, dance, and act; and do all of those things equally well. The days when most entertainers were awesome went out with the 1970's! Now, there are a few scattered about but we have to rely on the older artists because the newer artists aren't so great.
wonderful number. i bet she hated the person that designed her outfit though. don't tell me that tail didn't give her a headache in the first costume rehearsal
Who was the berk who made her wear that awful yellow curtain material. I thought she was going to trip over it at one stage. He wants shooting. Otherwise I thought she was brilliant. I thought her dancing was superb but of course I'm no judge.
People tend to forget that Ann Miller had a wonderful voice. The opening stance and vocalise in this number is like watching Lena Horne. And the dancing...simply scintillating!
Ann Miller wasn't even an adult when she acted her first part in "Stage Door". She was all of about 13-14 years old but, looked quite adult. When she made Easter Parade she was only about 18 years old or so. But, what an amazing talent and such a neat woman. And one thing of note, the colour of these old movies back when colour pictures were first being done; now that was some impressive colour so unlike today when everything is so natual it is muddy and frankly bores the eyes. Old colour rules!
Ann Miller's birthdate varies all over the place from 1919 to 1923 to "Not Available." If she was 18 in "Easter Parade," that means she was 8, ten years earlier, when she danced with Rogers in "Stage Door." The safest bet is she was 25 - 29 when she made "Easter Parade."
What can you say about a performer like this. There will never be another you. Thanks Ann for leaving me so many memories and for the pleasure of being able to watch you perform
Oh, I always loved this dance number. Boy, can she dance. How can you not love the bitchy character she plays with the little pet dogs that match her outfits and the huge hats? Hah! This is great stuff!
Thank you so very much for this collection of Ann Miller. I am a 68yr. old veteran and I lived that era. They called our era a time of innocence, and that is probably the truth. Back then, family was the most important thing. It took everything I had to keep from shedding tears. Such wonderful memories. We were too poor or I would have learned to tap. I wanted to, very much. The kids of today have no idea just what they're missing. Again, thanks so much.
I don't think it's fair to say that about kids today! I'm 15 and I love classic cinema! Lot's of us do! It won't be forgotten for a long time yet!
It is awful to think that some children will never see Casablanca or something similar but there is those of us that remain loyal to the old films!
As for me I'll always take the old! Because talent like this is being drowned out by mediocracy nowadays! And so myself and many other young people know exactly what the others around us are missing!
i know fred and gene were fantastic but ann miller, especially in this routine proves she is one of the greats. As a young kid watching this routine it was a true inspiration. thankyou for posting this
I am so happy that someone has put this great number on Youtube for people to see. What a performance! True artistry. I know Miss Miller has been an inspiration to many upcoming dancers. Bravo!
