Sure, it comes from rock and it is strictly speaking classified as rock music but it's become its own genre with other subgenres.

Bands say they're a metal band, not a rock band that plays metal.

You people need to know Rock is the main music genre while metal is a sub genre of rock .Although Rock sound’s overdrive has a lighter distortion than metal rock which has strong distortion...and the way rock has defined itself for the past five decades..It's just that ..there's an edge to real rock 'n' roll.
