byss89, I used to sail the seven seas as a mate. I am very experienced with pilots and yes, pilots usually give the maneouvring orders. But AT NO TIME can you as a pilot take command (Panama Canal: special rules).
I have taken part of numerous bridge teams, and I think you know that your orders are being monitored very closely. I have seen many qualified pilots but also seen frequent pilot errors such as on the way out of Felixstowe, where the pilot made as much as three (3) glaring mistakes...
byss89, legally you are an adviser, and I respect your thorough local knowledge and your important function in guiding the ships safely from A to B along with the master and crew. You guys are needed, no question about it.
tritsona, you are perfectly right.
75amj, you are completely wrong! The master carries the overall responsibilty.
I am a Pilot and let me tell you...when I board those ships, Ever word I speak to the Capt. and mates, they are constaintly on their toes. We usuarlly are in full command of the Vessels. At least I am at my Port.
CORRECTION- the pilot doesn`t necessary take over the navigational control. THE PILOT IS ADVISER .THE MASTER IS THE PERSON WHO BARES ALL THE RESPONSIBILITY SO HE IS IN CHARGE ALL THE TIME.
.sorry Captain, the pilot is not an advisor, the Master is in command of the ship and the pilot does the navigational control. This is a wecome partnership to the Master (I was Master before being a pilot) Usually yhe Master who has enough on his plate at any one time already. As a pilot for over 30 years, I find that only the prema donna captains resent the pilot doing his job.
One of these guys steered the Summit Venture right into the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa Bay, Florida in 1980, causing the bridge to crash and some 35 people in cars on the roadbed plummeted to their deaths in the frigid bay waters.

No. The pilot is responsible for the safe navigation of the vessel within the pilotage district. The master is responsible for the ship.
