Graeme Hicks was gonna be an electrician if not for being in the Hollies ? Perchance, George Harrison threw away the opportunity of a lifelime - an electrician apprenticeship - in order to be in The Beatles.
@Richardhedditch261 Oh yeah - I got his first name wrong. It says Tony Hicks, and I said Graeme Hicks. Years ago, I think a radio announcer doing a birthdays mention might have said what sounded to me like Graeme Hicks. It must have stuck in my mind. Its Tony Hicks.
Good morning, do you like sixties? Listen and pod cast my program " great sound of 60' s " on the site plumfm. Greeting and made blooper in rock and roll.
Salut, vous aimez les sixties ? Ecoutez et podcatez mon émission "le super son des sixties" sur plum fm. Salut et faites gaffe au rock'n roll.
goddammit those were the fucking times, i wished i lived then; great music, awesome cars, unprotected sex, no uptight pricks, no shitty rap, those times were good
Saw the Hollies in a mid-80s reunion with Nash. They opened with this song, and chills went up and down my spine. I've been to all the big shows from the Stones, U2 and McCartney, and that Hollies show is still my favorite. Damn, they were good.
@petegroves Are you sure? The Palladium show is scheduled for Sunday the 14th and the RRHOF ceremony is on Monday the 15th, so I think Tony would be attending that along with Allan and Graham and whomever else might be there.
Because Americans recognise him more.....pathetic really isn't it? I loved the Nash era as much as anyone, and it was good....but it wasn't very long!!
For me the reason for the Hollies Be Placed on the Hall of Fame is the whole thing, But Mainly by the enormous talent and wonderful voice of fantastic ALLAN CLARKE
The Hollies are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; this should include Clarke, Hicks, and Elliot, at least. Graham Nash could of course end up being double entered; ie; Crosby, Stills, and Nash.
Graham Nash is a big reason the Hollies are making it in there - he is DEFINITELY in the Clyde McPhatter club at last. He should really be three-timed.....
like most brit invasion bands, the hollies' early hits were r&b covers; popmeister graham gouldman (look him up) wrote a few #1s for them too. they may have waited too long to push their own tunes for a-sides; after nash left, they went back to outside writers for singles (had some good'uns too). allan clarke had one of the best voices ever in pop music & yes, they do belong in the r&r hall of fame.
WHY O WHY ...are the HOLLIES not in the ROCK and ROLL HALL OF FAME?>> all of their hits, and a song, i never before this week is AWESOME!!..check it out its called...DONT LET ME DOWN..just GREAT.
Why is everyone saying that Hollies had been much underrated? Here in Germany they had been very popular and successful. Great songwriting and arrangements and Clarke-Nash and Hicks quite unique!
People who say the hollies are underrated are expressing their own ignorance of the band (which of course was huge and very respected), while trying to sound clever.
Its all Politicks . Enjoy! They are great no matter what and other person thinks ( rockandroller4ever6 ) Asked why they were not so popular ? They were popular in the USA back in the 60's, 70's...New York area Radio played them constantly.
Thanks david
If you like their music that is all that matters...
They were MASSIVE in the 60s. My mother was in love with Alan. Their memory unfortunatley has been obscured by The Beatles, Stones ect but never the less i know that they were top sellers of the 1960s and sometime in the 70s too
Evie is GREAT. I like the Hollies as much, but neither is really superior; their goals and effect are different. One thing's for sure: both beat Linda Ronstadt's cover.
The Evie Sands story of unrecognized excellence is surely among the most telling in the history of rock and roll. I mean -- she wasn't even one of the many black singers who were ripped off by covers, which in a way makes it even more curious. Her story "wasn't supposed to happen." I say this as a bro', BTW.
OK, I just checked out Evie Sands' original of this song...all I can say is Wow! Very different, and like the Hollies, a very powerful performance. ptownfreddy is right--"unrecognized excellence," indeed! Thanks for turning me on to her work!
I love this! I've been looking for Tony interviews forever. He was a hottie when he was younger, but still has aged really well! Thanks for posting! Allan is looking fine in this vid too!
One of my all time favs.Luv Clarkey's intake of breath on the chorus, wonderful guitar by the equally wonderful Tony Hicks- a superb song.Great interview with Tony-Luv To see the rest-Cheers for this!!!
I just love The Hollies and I love Tony Hicks!!!! And this is one of my favorite songs whit them! And Tony looks so good there but he was such a hottie when he was younger!
Yes, We are so glad that Tony joined the Hollies!!!...Such a great band with GREAT musicians! He is a great lead guitatist that can play many different brand stringed instruments. Don't forget that great Banjo too!...I just got a new Hollies CD today from Mass. and its great!...It stays in the car. Youtube at home!...PLAY...it...LOUD!
LOVE this song! One of my all time faves and one of the Hollies most under appreciated songs it seems to me.... It foreshadows new wave of the 80s with the muffled guitar attack in the verses, great bassline feel &how it doesn't follow the guitar chords in the verses is A+, nice Motown style beat in the chorus with an almost Keith Moonish wrecklessness in the drums fills, some of the most interesting backing vocals ever in a rock song, and a GREAT melody! Can you tell how much I LOVE it?!
First 45 RPM record I ever bought as a 9-year old! Such an amazing song, amazing harmonies. Hollies were so tight and had a unique vocal quality missing from so much of today's music.
Ditto here, but with "Well Respected Man" by Ray Davies. Can you imagine the current crop of 21yo musicians writing songs like these? Well, maybe, but it will take another cultural revolution.
Graeme Hicks was gonna be an electrician if not for being in the Hollies ? Perchance, George Harrison threw away the opportunity of a lifelime - an electrician apprenticeship - in order to be in The Beatles.
