The NY Titans, later to become the Jets played there. Yes there was a Titans before the Tenessee Titans arrived on the scene. My dad and I would pass by the old Polo Grounds on our way to Yankee Stadium to watch the Giants play back in the 50s and early sixties.
nice stride piano, easy to dance to, I give it an 8! just kidding, it's a ten! how about the kids just horsing around on the field behind the babe, never saw that picture. thanx for posting!!!
Great old ballpark from when the baseball Giants were king, I was fortunate enough to see the Mets and New York Titans play there as a child. Probably the only stadium you ever had to walk DOWN to get to the bleachers from Coogan's Bluff. I will certainly read this book !
I believe THREE (NOT 4) HR's reached the CF bleachers at The Polo Grounds. Done first in 1954 by Braves Joe Adcock vs the Giants, and then done in back to back days in June 1962 by Hank Aaron and Lou Brock ---neither known for their prodigious (in distance) home runs.(And in Brock's case, not known for the NUMBER of HR's he hit.
I believe that the photos that appear in this video are actually from the steel and concrete structure that was erected after the fire of 1911. In answer to a question further down, four people hit home runs into the center field bleachers between 1911 and 1963. Believe it or not, two were on consecutive days. Can some one name the four hitters?
I believe the correct answer is THREE(not 4) homeruns were hit into the centerfield bleachers of the Polo Grounds..First done in 1954 by the Mil. Braves Joe Adcock, and then done on back to back days in 1962 by Hank Aaron and Lou Brock.Note: While obviously Aaron was perhaps the greatest HR hitter of the modern time(who didn't use steroids), he wasn't noted for his prodigious blasts (but rather the number of them he hit); and Brock a great base stealer, but not noted as a HR"slugger."
I'm assuming the book deals with the heavily-wooden version of the Polo Grounds destroyed by fire in 1911, correct? Was rebuilt in concrete and steel after that.
My Grandfather won the All Ireland GAA Football Final in the Polo Grounds in Sep 1947 as captain of Cavan. The only ever All Ireland played outside of Ireland. Fab to see any old footage as its very rare!
A stadium I would have loved to have seen...Great piano in background

The polo grounds is my favorite sports arena of all time. Its a shame they had to knock it down in the 60's.

The Polo Grounds; the one venue that makes me wish I was born earlier than I was (1959). To be there for a ball game would have been mega-sweet!

The Polo Grounds....I think that's a cool name. Sure beats the corporate names of today.
