    Thanks

  • will it work with cheap like china brushes im afraid that it will make them more spoilt

  • Hey EnKore, can you tell me how do I deodorize my Make up such as lipstick, Mascara, Eyeshadow, from germs?

  • what is the best way to store the brushes? keep then in the little bag they come in or a brushe bag .... i dont like to keep the out i think dust will set in to them...

  • Hi Koren, I have a severe allergy to fabric softener. Is there a subdtitute that I could use?

  • How do you deoderize a kabuki brush?

  • lmao at 'smelling like something died in it'

  • Just tried this on two new funky smelling MAC brushes and it worked great!

  • Amazing Korin :)

    Just tried this, fabulous! x

  • does this substitute or go before washing brushes?

  • the basic products do not mix with acids.

Baking soda and vinegar do not go together.

  • could you use anything else instead of fabric softener? like dish soap and water or baby shampoo?

  • does apple cider vinegar work with this solution? I have the clear pasteurized ACV.

  • you are so amazing <33

you have saved my brushes LOL.

  • Koren u just saved my 183 I got at the CCO last week. It smelled like a dead Rat! Thank u!!!!!!

  • is bicarbonate of soda the same thing as baking soda

  • Yes it's the same thing

  • yep! google it to check just in case!

  • SO HELPFUL!!! I i bought new brushes and they smelled sooo bad. I even cleaned them twice and the smell wouldnt go away.

  • thank you

  • How would you do this with a kabuki?

  • I should have tried this

  • thanks!@~!@#~ (:

  • HAHA LOVED the laugh when you said "cottage cheese" hah

  • hahah something died in there

  • is there a way to get rid of the smell of the brushes handle???

  • Also, can you use the same amount of solution that he used in the video for multiple brushes? Or did he only make enough for that one brush?

  • He answered both of your questions in the video.

  • The only vinegar I have is apple cider vinegar can I use that? lol. Has anyone tried that for this recipe?

  • the way u say so is realy funny

  • OMG, thank you so much for this!

i just got two new brushes from coastal scents, and i can't get the smell away (:

  • can u use laundry detergent instead of fabric softener?

  • isnt it the same thing?

  • I personally would omit the fabric softener because i found that smell to be unpleasant on my brushes that eventually goes on to my face!!!

  • Than you so much for this. :]

  • Is it normal for the brush to feel a little bit rougher in texture after this deoderizing process? Just did my mac 182 yesterday and it feels a tad bit rougher...

  • lol something died in it hihihihi

  • OMG THIS WORKS!! I ordered 2 brushes from CS..and one smelled like paint thinner and the other just straight poop! And after using this deoderizing method, the smells went away!! Thank u soo much EnKore!! You're the best!

  • EnKore- what do I do with a smelly Sephora kabuki that smells like moth balls and NOTHING works? Any suggestions? I tried this, deep cleaning like five times, air drying- everything! Nothing works =(

  • what happens if theres like a bluish black liquid that comes out when washing them???

  • that's normal with some dark haired brushes...(it's a gentle dye that just makes the bristles look darker and shinier)...just make sure you rinse it until the water you squeeze off the bristles turns clear ;)

  • thanks! i was washing it a couple of times but it never got rid of the smell. i'm going to try this method tomorrow.

  • Thank you so so much for this vid! I can't tell you the number of brushes I've purchased and set aside and haven't used because even after deep cleansing a few times they still smelled like dead animals. I had no idea what I could use on them that wouldn't damage the bristles until now!! Thanks again!

  • Im just wondering..;

Can you use Baking Powder instead of Baking Powder?? :)

Im from Norway, so im just not sure where to get it in Norway....

    Nice Video!

  • u are so resourceful and you are THE BEST!!!

Thanks a ton for this video

  • They smell like...something died in them...you're so funny! lol.

  • Could you just use the MAC cleansing product?

  • it doesnt deodorize of neutralize smells.

  • hi koren i'm not english and in portuguese we've other designation... i just wanted to know if baking soda is the same as sodium bicarbonate?

thanks for the video i trully ly :D

  • Yep.. baking soda is the same chemical as sodium bicarbonate... But BAKING POWDER is not the same thing as BAKING SODA. it has creme of tarter added it usually

  • i love your videos you help me so much thanks =}

  • Coastal scents has good brushes.

  • hey koren! i was just wondering if normal vinegar and baking powder can be used? because i couldnt find distilled vinegar the other day so i grabbed the normal vinegar and baking powder (and not baking soda). can they be used to make large batches or not recommended? thanks!

  • you can use any cooking vinegar, clear or white is prefered tho. use Baking Soda, not baking powder. baking Soda deodorizes.

  • hii koren.. love the video but i was wondering can i use this deodorizing method with my coastal scents brush? im about to get them nd im worried that some of them are going to smell a bit please get back at me.. thanks

  • yes, the reason why I did this video is to deodorize my CS brushes.

  • i love you enkore! ur so amazing.

  • i was wondering, do you put clear nail polish on the numbers of your new mac brushes to keep them from fading off? or let them fade..? i know some people put it on.. ugh im not sure if i should or not, i dont want to ruin my brush =[

  • I subscribed to quite a few people on YT and they all put clear polish on to protect the numbers. Some dip the bottoms in nail polish so that they can tell their brushes from other people's brushes.

  • No I dont - I find that nail polish, much like in fingernails, crack and peel after a few weeks. I apply clear matte wood varnish lacquer on mine. The kind used on wood furnitures. You can get those at craft stores.

  • Hi Koren I love your videos!!!! You are great:)

  • after i wash it again i blow dry my brushes is that ok?

  • just air dry it -- blowdrying will make it fluffier than normal, and will cause the bristles to have static.

  • hi koren! i love your videos! :)

i bought a mac 187 on ebay.. i paid like $32 for it so i probably should've just paid 10 more at a mac counter.. but anyway, it sheds so much, and i tried washing it but it shed a lot more, and it smells awful. do you think it's a fake brush??

  • i think its a fake!!

  • i think it's fake as well! maybe the makeup counter would have been a better idea.

sorry to hear that it's shedding. hope i helped.

  • I love your videos! I tried your homemade cleanser, and It worked like a charm on my brushes! I couldn't believe so much old makeup came out of my brushes! Also I started invest in more expensive makeup brushes and you made my buying expierence so much easier! Thank-you! I had a question though, I like to use MAC Paints alot as a base before I apply my shadows. Do you have any recommendations for any MAC brushes that apply and spread out the product well? Thanks for your help! Happy Holidays!

  • 239 is good :)

  • I use MAC 242 on Paint and Paintpot. 239 works too.

  • 217!!

  • I just got a set that I ordered off of eBay, and it doesn't smell like dead things, it kinda smells like paint mixed with sharpie?

    is that strange?

  • very helpful thank youu :D

  • Just received my large flat bronzing brush today! It smells horrible...like dead animal or i'd even say SH..!!!I washed it with a baby shampoo about 5 times and it still smells very funky! I hope your recipe will work for me. Let's see tomorrowhow thing goes...

  • I just bought a brand new MAC 187 brush, The bristle does not have funny smell. The Handle though, smell terrible! is it the paint? how can i do to fix it?

  • Hi enkore

is the fabric conditioner really a must in this formula?

I would love to try this deodorizer but I really not fancy using any chemical fabric conditioner or laundry detergent.

Can just vinegar, baking soda & water do the same job?

  • then dont try it?

and you answered your own question

    :)

  • how long can you keep the mixture if you make extra

  • you check the exp date of the ingredients you use, and you go by the date that is the soonest. So if your distilled water expires the soonest on Nov 15, then thats when your mixture will be good until.

  • I did this today because I just got a new Coastal Scent brush and it SMELLED ABSOLUTELY COMPLETELY UNBELIEVABLY AWEFULLLLLLLL!!!!!! Your deodorizing method completely took away the stench! Thank you, ENKORE! You're the best!

  • You think I can use red wine vinegar? LOL.

  • OMG, thank you sooooooooo much for posting this! My Coastal Scents brushes smelled horrid after I washed them the first time. I think this concoction actually removed their yucky smell, YAY!

  • I don't have any fabric softener. Can I use Woolite?

  • you sure can!

  • I have read that baking soda 'flattens' or stops working after about half an hour or so. If thats the case, if you store this deodorizing solution, will it still be as potent as it was when originally made?

  • yeah make this in one-time batches as the baking soda only works for a certain short period of time.

  • can you dedorize your old brushes. I never desorized them when they were new?

  • sure you can, you can do this anytime you feel your brushes needs deodorizing

  • hey enkore, are there any good substitutes for fabric softener? could i possibly use tide detergent or no?

  • sure you can use gentle fabic detergent or even woolite

  • this was so helpful.

    thank you

  • FYI.......this deodorizing method really works...........just not on the costalscents flat bronzing brush. For some reason, this brush smells so bad, don't know if anything will help!!

  • I tried your method of deodorizing as I purchased a coastalscents large flat bronzing brush and it was super smelly. All my brushes (I have tons) don't smell at all but this one.....yuck! I did this method about 3 times with the last time letting it soak for 1/2 hour and still can't get rid of the strong dead animal smell. Please help!!

  • Try synthetic.

    Peace.

  • God I hate the smell .. I have 2 flat bronzing brushes!! disgusting!!

  • Did you try to deodorize them yet? Let me know if you get the smell out and how you did it? Glad to know I'm not the only one. Thought I just got a dud or something.

  • also, i was told yesterday that natural brushes are packed in preservatives so that they arrive intact...

  • Thank you sooo much for this video...I've been wondering what to do about that smell, and instead have tried to deep clean them a few times (which completely didn't work!)

    Thanksss!!!

  • since this makes my brushes feel softer how often can i do this technique? my 129 is getting kind of scruffy

  • hey enkore~ great ideas of how u deodorize the new makeup brushes but i have a question.. after u finish deodorize the first brush.. can u reuse it again for another brush? thanks~ xoxo

  • yes you can do the brushes in batches using the same solution.

  • hey there...hope everything is great..!love your videos...i wanted to ask you a question..i just bought a set of mac brushes online..and i cleaned them with you formula...but the solutions starts to turn purple from the brushes...any ideas?!...

  • yes all brushes are manufactured and coated with a vegetable dye to protect the bristles. These dyes will wash off at some point - so yeah, thats normal.

  • yer beginning was really familar, then i watched the tarzan movie nd thats it! haha im pretty sure you got it from somwhere else thoXD

  • its the version from the Broadway Musical version

  • would u use this also when you wash your brushes and lay them flat and when you remove your brush there is like pinkish greenish black batches left on the paper? wat does that mean is tat a good sign? thanks

  • its most likely still some of the vegetable dye in the bristles when its manufactured. It will stop eventually.

  • Can i do the same recipe on my Shu Uemura's brushes? I mean, instead of using the cleansing recipe for new brush, can i use it as a regular brush cleanser? Thanks!

  • you can add alcohol and hair conditioner. Those are the key ingredients you want in a brush cleaser. One sanitizes, the other conditions the bristles.

  • what does the baking soda do and can i not use it to deodorize?

  • it deodorizes

  • i learned a lot from your videos! I love you! hehe =)

  • Why not just use the MAC cleanser?

  • it doesnt get rid of the strong smell

  • are these safe to use on coastal scents brushes?

  • yes, definitely

  • thank you so much for this deodorizing recipe. after multiple washings i decided to give up and toss them out but, this deodorizing process saved them. thanks again!!!!

  • i dont own baking soda do you need or you have something to replace it with

    thankyou =]

  • is there a formula that doesn't use fabric softener? because im highly allergic to fabric softener. :[

  • you can replace that with laundry detergent

  • Dear i will roughly explain to u alright?

Mix a mixture of ... in any container

    - 1/4 cup plain water

    - 1/2 teaspoon fabric softener

    - 1 teaspoon distilled/normal colorless vinegar

    - 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

Mix them and pour the mixture into a smaller bottle & soak ur brush for abt 2minutes.

  • ive had some nars brushes from like a few months and they didnt smell weird at all. today i decided to do the routine wash using ur brush cleanser and then proceeded to wash it with shampoo. I let them air dry abit and then dried them with my hairdryer. but now they smell like dead animals ITS HORRENDOUS i promise u :( helppp encoreeeee

  • Try using the deodorizer..? You did post this on the vid site for it..

  • hey xmaria - wash it again, and do the deodorize mixture. Just flat dry it and dont use a hairdryer, just let it completely dry over night. See how that goes.

  • Is there anything I can use other than vinegar or can I not use vinegar at all? I know it's the main part of the deodorizing but I don't have any in the house and I'm desperate to deodorize the coastal scents buffer brush X_x

  • you can definitely try it without.

  • This was a Very helpful video!! I recently purchased a buffer brush from Coastal Scents and it arrived with a very funky smell. I have washed it three times and it still smells!! I am definately going to try this! Thanks for posting great videos:)

  • I cannot BEGIN to tell you how helpful this video was for me. I get really expensive brushes but they do sometimes smell very odd and I had no idea why. When I would wash them with baby shampoo it helped some but it didn't fully remove the smell. But thanks to you and your fabulous instructional video I NOW will no longer have to deal with that strange smell! Thanks so much! You are greatly appreciated on YOUTUBE! *smile*

  • This video was really helpful, one of the brushes had a really nasty stench. I soaked it in vinegar and baking soda and now the stench is gone. :)

  • oops i already washed my new coastal scents brush with conditioner and water before i saw this should i do this anyway?

  • if the odor is gone from regular washing, then you dont need to.

  • Ey Enkore I love your clips. I have been asked to do some make up at a local cabaret set however I am not fully educated on the various types of make ups that are used color or techniques. can you point me in the right direction. or at least give me any ideas i am going to keep searching for more of your clips. i wish i had your tutorials in my back pocket for last minute touch ups..

  • Ill tray dat... dat hlpd me lot...

  • Was wondering if I can use this solution to wash my brushes on a regular basis (once weekly) after I deep clean them? Thanks!

  • yeah, its safe to do it weekly if it needs to be deodorized. I personally do it, cuz I like that downy smell to the bristles somehow, just makes it extra fresh smelling.

  • thanks for your reply! you dont know how much I love your videos. they are extremely helpful! thank you so much once again! love to see more coming!

  • My brushes smell like pig...

    Ty Koren!

  • thank you enkore!

  • Thanks for explaining the stink! Great video!!

  • Good job folks!!!

  • Good job folks!!!

  • OMG- I was so close to tossing the deluxe buffer I bought from coastalscents. Just got it in the mail yesterday and I wanted to wash it B4 using it. I gave it a good washing this morning with baby shampoo and it stunk soooo bad after getting wet. I had it drying on my kitchen counter and it stunk up the whole room! I just made your magic potion and voila... problem solved. THANKS a million for this tip!

    ahh hahaha.

    but i loved the vid.

and now im deff gonna do this.

    thxxx :]

    xxxxxx.

  • lol you're hilarious..and like, THE MAC GURU :]

  • lol you're hilarious..and like, THE MAC GURU :]

  • you made me laugh so hard when you said the "cottage cheese" and then you started laughing! you are so funny!

  • We don't have any fabric softener on hand. We actually don't use it. Anything we can use in lieu of it? I'd hate to have to go out and buy fabric softener just for this occasion!

  • You could ask a friend or a neighbor for a little bit! Or.. laundromats sell them in coin op machines. The laundromat I go to sells a small bottle ( 1 load use) for 75 cents! Good Luck! :)

  • Great tip about laundromat :)

  • you can also try woolite or cold wash detergent. These are great for natural fibers like for washing wool, silk, angora, etc. Some detergents also have built-in fabric softener.

  • thanks koren for the tips. made my brushes feel a lot softer now from the downy

  • I just tried it and it's much better now! The funky smell has basically all gone and the bristles aren't as crazy :) Thank you for your help!

  • my new brushes smelt like horse hair....was realy off putting....

  • Hi Enkore!

I have a dilemma: a few days ago I bought a mac 168 brush but it stank! Really bad! So a washed it with shampoo(this was before I saw this video)and now it smells even worse AND a few of the bristles have gone a bit out of shape! Do you think I should return it? Or should I try to deodorize it?(I think it'll still work fine) Also, because it's white will the mixture stain the bristles? Oh and I don't have distilled white vinegar, will brown malt vinegar work?

    Sorry to be a pain!

  • try to deodorize it first, then throughly wash again, shape the bristle, and dry flat. See if that makes a difference.

  • your teeth are so bright white! holy!

  • will unscented downy work?

  • hey skittles - thats fine.

  • lol the bye with ur fingers nd the "cottage cheese" laugh was funny :DD

  • Baking soda and vinegar react, actually. You can make rocket toys that zoom across water using baking soda, vinegar, and a bottle with a small hole in it. (Just be careful!) Sort of like the Diet Coke and Mentos. It's neat! *geeky*

  • Good thing you made this video when you did...I was about to chuck my retractable brush because I'm so tired of the smell...it made me sick! My retractable brush thanks you!

  • You are SOOO cool!

  • is there anything i could use to replace the fabric softener? could i use regular laundry soap?
