The first time I heard "That's Just The Way It Is" and "Mandolin Rain" I could hear it dripping southern...not a problem for me, being from Breckinridge County KY, but the bluegrass take here is just remarkable, a real sense of the heart of the song, great job...:-)
FANTASTIC BRUCE HORNSBY MASTER CLASS FREE ON USTREAM! Learn tons about Bruce's great music and piano styles. HUGE FUN, totally free, entertaining, and educational. Type in "Dave Frank" Hornsby on the Ustream website anytime:)
Found the show from Telluride '89....much better quality and performance. Google "Hornsby ozzybeef telluride '89" look about halfway down the first page.....
Theres a performance of this song with Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Victor Wooten, Jerry Douglas(?) Skaggs and Hornsby.....its from a few years back either at Telluride or Red Rocks.....in the same set they did "Valley Road". I've been looking EVERYWHERE for that show, I feel like if I had the exact date and location I could find it. Can anyone out there help?
To those who don't dig the clapping: what do you think is going on here, a high school recital?....This is a fucking concert you geriatric freaks! GET WITH IT!
All the solo work is amazing in this performance, including Bruce's and Ricky's parts and that of the banjo player and acoustic guitarist, but honors should go to the fiddler, who is simply outstanding--her solo soars with power and grace like the best electric guitar solo you've ever heard in a rock concert. I also *loved* the good-humored homage to Stevie Wonder's "Sir Duke" in Bruce's final round of soloing.
I love it when they mix it up like this. You can't touch the original but the bluegrass versions of this song and the version of "The Valley Road" that he did with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones are among my faves!
hmmm, you best go check the credits on the "Will the circle be unbroken volume II" CD.....as I last recall, Bela was not the banjo player on that track....nor were the Flecktones.
Like some previous responders, I like listening to Hornsby's original material from the 80's (particularly "Mandolin Rain" and "The Way It Is"). That said, I saw Hornsby around the late 90's and was distressed at how FAST he played his old classics. But I came to learn he likes to fiddle around and mix up some of his old standards to see what else can be done with them. I still prefer the original tempos, but respect his skills and theories as a musician (and wow, is he GOOD live!!!)
I was reading a book about the politics of country music. Ricky Skaggs stated that when he hears James Taylor and Bruce Hornsby, he forgets that they're Democrats. He is friends with the both of them. Well, I have to say, when I hear Ricky play that mandola, I forget he's a Republican. He is one of the last links to bluegrass. Ricky Skaggs is in a class by himself. He blends well with Bruce Hornsby in the CMT performance.
@daddymak8 why do you have to bring politics into it!?!? I have a friend that relates EVERYTHING to shit like that and its such a buzzkill! who gives a shit!
Check out Frankie Moreno and his band perform this Bruce Hornsby song! Go to either BetsysView or Frankie Moreno~ The Way It Is (Bruce Hornsby). Tell me Frankie isn't great! And check out his piano work!!!
This version doesn't really do it justice. I saw this live at Wolf Trap a few weeks back and when the full band comes in, 3 acoustic guitars, bass, fiddle, banjo, mando, and of course piano...it really is something else. So full, so great. Gave me chills.
I agree with you on this one! I loved how the fiddle followed the main piano melody! I saw Bruce Hornsby & Ricky Skaggs in concert mostly because I wanted to see Mike Farris open the show. (I think he only opened 3 or 4 of their shows.) I didn't know much about Bruce Hornsby & Ricky Skaggs' project. I was very impressed by the immense musical talent of the 8 of them!
Bruce sings the second verse solo - including the end refrain, "Oh,but don't you believe them...yes, don't believe them". Then he reaches up an octave at the end of the chorus - solo.
Yeeeeee Haaaaawwwwwwwwww. Thats the way it is... Do si Do... (vomit) But the rednecks are glad he butchered his own song...

its good but not with the feeling and magic of the studio recording of 1987. Actually bruce's voice sounds better in this song than in mandoline rain
