  • Male firefly: hey there let me be your mate this season

    Female firefly: -flashes twices-

    Male firefly: alright double yes!!!

  • Too much reading. Geeez, this is not "BookTube."

  • If only human mating had two flashes for no!

  • Are you sure 2 flashes = no? It might mean Yes, YES!!!

  • I love fireflies! They're my favorite beetle, along with Lady Bugs!

  • you have the most............ interesting puns on your videos...

  • Thanks, this was very informative. I liked the music.

  • One is yes, two is No. :) That is why mating is actually a very bad thing for all, because energy consuming a lot. That is why many of them will die the next day. :) Same as people, if people do that a lot , same result. :)

  • is male.

  • Those are so big my god! I'd hate to have one of those fly in my face!

  • Aaaaa svetulka... ot koga ne bqh vijdala.. :( lipsvat mi

  • why in 1:22 the firefly has 4 legs?

  • Nice video. If u catch n few put in in a jar n blow weed smoke in there.they stay lite for hours. N live fine. ( school project....promise)

  • i love these bugs

  • I learned so many thing in that first part of the video

  • the females are home in the kitchen... :)

  • FAKE!!! FIREFLIES DOESNT EXIST!

  • @Calvin8076

no, they exists i have seen it, even i caught them too .... come to India :-)

  • @Calvin8076 yes they do.. have u never seen/ heard of them!!

  • @Calvin8076 yes, they do

  • Wow, amazing, i wish we had those in my country = /

  • It's very sad that now a days in Pakistan due to extreme use of poisonous pesticides have finished this beautiful bug...Now a days we are not able to see even a single firefly in the fields....In the past which was making a night scene very beautiful.....Do u think this is so called 21st century's progress...

  • they are a superior race... the male's only objective in life is to reproduce xD.

  • They don't eat? How to they get their energy then?

  • @G3org3Master as larva they never stop eating until they are adults

  • @jherr94 Oh right, thanks.

  • I saw these all the time as a child but haven't seen one in many, many years! Where have all the fireflies gone? Thanks for the memories!

  • KILL IT WITH FIRE

  • i was in my backyard yesterday (in quebec) and i saw 2 of them flying around me

  • hahahaha

  • Get one and stomp on one...Its bad but it looks cool

  • @shadow1058 You can't. We can't afford to do that anymore. Fireflies are on the path to go extinct. I remember 3, 4 years ago my backyard was filled with fireflies every summer. Now, i haven't seen a single 1.

  • @BlackOakStudios I went to the park 3 days ago....And i saw 5 of those bugs...They are really fun to be with...I wish i can give you a pack of them so you can go back to those old years.

  • @BlackOakStudios Ive seen a lot of them this year, and I live in the city. Usually at night Ill see at least 10-20 of them flying around the yard.

  • I live in one of the suburbs in Scranton PA and every night TONS of them come out!! :D I love collecting them in a huge jar, than taking it into my parents room at night xD xD xD xD xD

  • I was just about to go to sleep then i saw this green light flying around so i got up and turned my light on and off so i could see it then I killed it, kinda scared me actually.

  • lol sounds like it has a hard life. doesn't eat. poops in your hand wen its scared.

  • hutum.... KATYDDS!!!

  • i guess so many artificial lights now, don't let them reproduce anymore cause they can't find each other anymore i miss to se a firefly :(

  • i live in missouri. i see them all the time in the summer

  • EXCELLENT video, and very entertaining. I learned a LOT and i laughed while learning. Thank you. YOu are talented.

  • Thanks for the video! I live in Ga USA and these lightning bugs remind me of when I was a kid catching them in a jar and watching glow!! Thanks again for the memories!

  • They're blinking outside right now here in Nebraska :) Love them, they're about as 'cute' as a bug can get!

  • Great vid!

  • I saw them on my vacation in Italy, they're awesome :D

  • This is a wonderful video. There is magic in a night meadow in summer! Ah, to dance across the lawn with fireflies once again! I grew up in Ohio, and now live on California coast -- great here but NO FIREFLIES! How I miss them!

  • aww i loved em when i was younger me n my sis used to catch em n put in in jars

  • They used to be all over the place in my backyard in Norfolk/Virginia Beach when I was a kid... now u hardly ever see them...

  • who has time to eat when yur busy doin everything u see? :D lol i wuv fireflies they b so purty :D

  • I live in Minnesota so there are obviously tons of those, well, used to, there were tons when i was a kid and now I can't believe they are almost extinct in america.

  • lol a mason jar

  • i need to inject luciferin in my finger!

  • Its amazing how these small creatures have enough energy to produce that light periodically....Nature never ceases to amaze me :)

  • These thing populate think in my town. I live in Mo and out fields look incredible when these guys swarm around in the summer time.

  • Wow thats a really bright light is producing, great capture! very interesting!

  • Nice project. But LUCIFERIN is an acid on which the enzyme LUCIFERASE acts, in addition to oxygen and some ions to produce the luminescence.

  • Wow!! Thank you for taking the time to put up this Video, I have lived my entire life in So Cali and I have never once seen one in person and this is the first time I have seen one up close. Thank You....

  • thears water in thear idiot

  • I owuld so dance to this.

  • I have seen lots of these fireflies in punjab north india ..we call them jugnoo...bt m nt sure bout the reason of flash light given here...coz in my village we used to catch them in a glass jar and they would flash light all the time inside just like that...

  • Save the Fireflies!

  • it would be cool if you add fireflys owlcity to the video lol XD

  • Doesn't have to be a particular temperately for them to flash? a older family member told me this a while back but forgotten the temp they said they would light off at... :/

  • Many years ago I drove down to Florida and we drove through the smokies. As far as you can see the forest was lit up like a Christmas trees it was the most amazing act of nature I have seen to this day.

  • man i wish they had these where i lived

  • there were a lot of these around when I was younger. I live and have lived in south texas all my life. I haven't seen any fireflies for the past 10 years and even to the present day. also....nothing to do with this but sunflowers are rare and there used to be a whole bunch of them

  • great vid...love fire flys...

  • It's probably been 20 years or more since I saw a field full of lightning bugs on a warm night. Occasionally I'll see one or two of them, but to me that's sadder than seeing none at all. I grew up in Maine and they were very common then. They used to be common in New Hampshire, too, but now they are in steep decline in most parts of the state. Truly they are one of Nature's wonders. Thank you so much for sharing, and for your entertaining presentation.

  • i wish they were in england

  • wats the song here called

  • Should CA glue about a dozen on a night flyer plane heheheh

  • OHHHHHHHHHHHH *fapfapfap* lol jk

  • When I was a kid there were nighst when there were fireflies all over the place and it was magical. Blinking lights all around you. I haven't seen such sigh for many years.

  • @Kinkoyaburi T-T

    Have a good day,

    Shannie

  • @TotalyStripes Come to illinois!

  • @Kinkoyaburi one night i saw ... i think there was at lesst 500 fireflies in the air and on the grass flashing and flashing

    it was awsome

  • they should make an orgination were people all around the woprld breed fireflys and then release them for mating so that way they never go exstint it could be called firefly resuce

  • @AnimalLuv1 They really should.

  • @AnimalLuv1 it's bad that they can't live in every corner of the earth, because due the weather.

  • @AnimalLuv1 Omg thats awesome!! My cat would eat them all....:( lol!!

  • i like females flashing me

  • I wish we had them in the west. I think it is to dry.

  • Love em!!

  • I live in the Chicago area and haven't seen many lightning bugs for quite a few years.

Yet, this year they are around more; that's nice to see.

  • HAHA me tooooo i see alot tho

  • I was looking for the flash pattern of Photinus pyralis and you showed me. Thanks. I've got them in the yard in Columbia, MO.

  • They are gonna be extinct soon!?

    Noooooo.... :(

  • mine were mating i cought some XD

  • I used to catch these things as a kid.

The females can and actually do fly. But only to get around, during mating displays, the males do all the flying. Also the light on the males covers two or three abdominal segments, and the females light just covers one segment and it's usually a small square inset in the middle.

As for them going extinct, firefly larva feed on slugs and other small "pest" invertibrates. So what do expect to happen when chemicals get put down for nice lawns and gardens?

  • We can see a lot in the villages in south India Dave especially in the state of kerala.I used to wonder how they produce electricity but I know its about chemical reaction but its still amazing.

  • Thanks.

  • @christychackojohn xD once i killed one by accident...and like i brought peroxide and put some on it and their tail glew after it was dead!!! :P...but then it just turned off forever :/

  • They live all over Iowa.

    I'm used to them!

  • in the early 90s they were dominate late 90s the population nearly cut in half, now 70 percent remain, the globalists and their system of law and government and arresting people for feeble actions is evidence of all death to any living species, our way of life is killing everything (noT our lives personally just the majority) like the people who drive h2's and throw away 100$ shoes after a month.

  • Very true,

  • i must correct myself, 70 percent is missing, 30 percent remain,

  • Interesting information and presented well. Another good video from Dave. 5 stars.

    Eric

  • Thanks kindly Eric. You saw them first hand here. Do they populate in Georgia as well?

  • Nice, your camera handles well in the dark! Noticed this first in the Firebird night flying videos, which showed up very well.

    Thanks!

  • Thank you. Yes, my new Aiptek HD is much more suited in the dark than my Sony GC 1 was.
