I saw Midnight screenings of Harry Potter 4-7 part 1. I didn't see the Midnight Screening of Part 2 because I wanted to see it in Real 3D. My local movie theather doesn't have it.
huh...I feel like my least fav book is deathly hallows, my fav being Prisoner of Azkaban, my least fav movie is Half Blood Prince, and my fav being...Prisoner of Azkaban.
I wish I had been a part of the fandom for longer. I feel like I missed out on so many things. But I'm so glad I joined, even though I'm late because HP allowed me to kind of relive my childhood and be excited about something again.
8 dislikes? How?! Kayley, you're amazing and one of my absolute favorite YouTubers ever. I don't understand why someone would dislike this video, let alone ANY of your videos.
@TheParadoxSocks Haha that just clicked!!! That episode is one of the few David Tennet series that I watched(I'm a late bloomer and have been in the Doctore Who world for about a year but I want to watch every Doctor that there ever was) when I heard him yell Expelliarmis and then "good ol' JK" I about lost it!!! I was so excited. Because in reality it doesn't matter who you are its just the passion to read a book even if it is only 50 pages long. And to me that is what the Doctor showed.
Honestly, I always wondered why you spelled things the British way xD. I wasn't sure if you did it because you just thought it was the proper way or because you live in Washington which is right by Canada and I think they do the same thing. But I just realized that's a dumb thing to think. Besides I live in upstate New York which also borders Canada ... >.>
My parents are those kind of parents that shelter their kids a TON, so I wasn't allowed to read Harry Potter as a kid. :( But now I'm 17, and I just finished The Deathly Hallows a few weeks ago, and I've got to say, it was amazing. I cried like I've never cried before. J.K. Rowling really is a genius. Those characters... My god. Genius woman. I absolutely love Harry Potter. :D
This video made me feel really emotional about the fandom - partly gratefulness for its existence but also sorrow that I've never been more involved in it :(
Was really interesting to hear about your journey though. Also, you sometimes remind me of my brother, which will mean absolutely nothing to you, but is intended as a compliment ;)
When I was about 12 my mom grounded me from Harry Potter. She took away my HP video games, books, posters, deck of cards, and I think one of my wands. She knew what to do. x)
I'm so excited for the midnight viewing, as much as Harry potter has been a part of me for as long as I can remember, I've never been to a midnight release.
Also, I LOVE your "weird" spelling, caus I'm British anywaays ;)
Can people just shut up about the American and English spellings of words? Who the hell cares? I'm not talking about Kayley, I'm talking about commenters. In America, we omit some "u's" that British English doesn't. Big woop. People who are saying that this or that is the proper way to spell it are just being stupid. If I get the basic idea of what you're trying to say, then I don't care how many u's you put in favorite...
loads of harry potter was filmed in the cathedral where i live including the writing on the walls and moaning mertle's bathroom in the chamber of secrets :)
Maybe it's different in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, but personally, if clarification has been needed I've always just said English English...after all, the language is English, not British :P
So do you consider the first book to be Philosopher's Stone, then? Or Sorcerer's?
@CodenameJD Sorry, I know you're not in anyway talking to the people in the comments but I would say The Philosopher's Stone... I live in the Republic of Ireland... When people say The Sorcerer's it really annoys me for some reason... It was first intented to be The Philosopher's Stone so it really should be that... (Even though J.K had to change it for reasons..) :)
@ButterFingers7924 Yes, but unless I'm very much mistaken It's still Philosopher's Stone in Northern Ireland, isn't it? So that would be the version everyone you knew grew up watching, that would be the version you saw in cinema... :/
@CodenameJD Yes, I'd say so... And yeah it was called that when I was growing up.. I think it's mainly just in the US that it's The Sorcerer's (And that would be considered US English) Stone 'cause I think there was another book out at the time that was quite big with the same name (Philosopher's) and J.K didn't want to seem as if she stole the name... And then everywhere else like Canada, Wales, Northern Ireland etc. it would be 'UK English' or whatever you would like to call it .. :)
@ButterFingers7924 No, Scholastic, the American publishers didn't think children would read a book with "philosopher's" in the title (i.e. they thought American children were stupid) and so changed it. In hindsight J. K. deeply regrets it and wishes she'd fought harder to keep it the way it should be, but at the time she wasn't in a position to do very much.
Your explanation was, however, the reason for Philip Pullman's Northern Lights being changed to The Golden Compass.
@CodenameJD Ahh that's it! That explanation makes me angrier... it should be kept the way it was intented. I personally think 'Sorcerer' sounds too typically wizard... Philosopher-as is the name-sounds more like, deep and thoughtful (as is the book) not just the typicial shtuff... (This will like not happen but..) They should sell the Bloomsbury versions of the books in America :)
@GaiashKetoji Fall is actually an English medieval term. When the pilgrims and stuff went over to America they kept it, while the language kept developing over in Europe. BOOM! :)
@NoOtherNamesWereLeft I LOVE Prisoner of Azkaban as well... It was definately my favourite movie before Deathly Hallows came out...(sorry) :) Deathly Hallows is an amazing book in general and I love that, too.. :D
@andyot7777 I know that! But you should know that I'm always more liable to the UK then the USA and I have some conservative understandings so God save the queen.
I've seen every Harry Potter movie with the same friend. I've never been able to go to a midnight release and that makes me feel like I've been missing out on something special.
My American friends and I (I'm Canadian) alway argue about the "superfluous Us" in British spelling. Next time I have one of those discussions the only thing I'm going to say to them is, "come at me, bro."
i feel kinda sad that i didn't grow up with Harry Potter. I wish i had first read the books when i was younger. I wish i had let it influence what kind of person i would become. I just wonder how different i would be now if i had read them when i was younger. I feel like i missed out on something that turned out to be so important to me. I read the books last year and i can't even describe how amazing they were. Now the last movie is coming out and i'm sad that my time with HP was so short :(
i always look forward to your videos. especially the harry potter ones because you expose me to ways of looking at the books like i never have before and even though it was more or less talking about the social aspect, i loved it just the same
When I first saw the title of this video, I automatically thought of the Shakespeare episode of Doctor Who, season 3 I believe, in which Shakespeare ended his witch killing speech with "Expelliarmus!" (thanks to Martha), and the Doctor says, "Good ol' JK!"
Hearing you talk about all these experiences makes me wish I was born earlier. I only started getting into Harry Potter after the majority of the films were made, because I was too young to really read those types of books yet. Plus, I have no potter obsessed friends to talk with, so it makes it difficult for me to go to cons, etc. But I will always love Harry Potter no matter if I have those experiences or not! (:
I love these videos. I know that we can't make every video about Harry Potter, but I wish we could. Something about people talking about Harry Potter just makes me happy/proud/etc.
This bit is not so much for Kayley, but more for the angry commenters:
I am Scottish and I don't care about English vs American spelling front, both are correct. The "Americanization" is simpler in a lot of ways, but the English was the original. Whatever.
On the English/British language front, it is called the English language so I totally accept it being called the English spelling, but calling it British is cool too. Kayley corrected herself so let her be.
@andreweatsbugs It did suck, but there are midnight releases for the final film at cineworld (amongst others) - book your tickets before they all sell out!
YAY!! You spell in Canadian! That makes me much happier than it should. I think words look prettier with U's anyways. I remember when I was little though, I spelled the American way for a while because I was too lazy to put the U in.
@JManHobbs So you're saying people in foreign countries who can't speak English didn't actually read Harry Potter? Yes, they did. And just because I read harry potter in the American English versions doesn't make me any less of a fan. You're just ignorant for saying that.
@MissPotterPlease FYI. I believe the word you're looking for is arrogant not ignorant. Dictionary meaning for:
Arrogant: Someone who behaves in a proud, unpleasant way towards others because they believe they are more important over others.
Ignorant: Someone that does not know things they should know.
Secondly, some others did not read it the way it was intented by J.K. Rowling. In some foreign countries the term 'house' can not be explained and the way it being written to be read was confused.
@andreweatsbugs I'm in the UK, my local, independent cinema, which I saw every other HP movie at wasn't permitted to do a midnight release by WB. The large chain cinemas, like VUE, are allowed though.
I sometimes even go so far as to say that Deathly Hallows is my favourite book not just of the series, but of all time. And that gets a lot of sneering disrespect from other English majors, but I'm just all "COME AT ME, BRO". Haha you using 'bro' took me by surprise for some reason. I'm going to make that my phrase of the day (not that I actually have 'phrases of the day').
admittedly I've never read the books, but I love the films and am feeling like my best friend has broken sacred tradition by being too busy on the weekend it comes out so I'm going on my own.
Though I'm so very different from you, I feel like we'd be great friends and get along-because of Harry Potter. If it hadn't been for Potter, I'd probably see your channel and leave, thinking you're just a redhead nerd. Glad Potter changed my life and how I see things :)
@fantabulous123 Hmmm? What's a backhanded compliment? And yes, a redhead nerd is a compliment in many ways, but I wouldn't have known that if it weren't for Potter. So... yes?
@AlicetheShort Oh, sorry if you meant it as a nice thing. I took the word "just" to mean a limited classification, as if Kayley is defined and restricted to being no more than a redheaded nerd, and for that matter "redhead" came across as a negative connotation. I guess the internet makes it hard to distinguish insults from compliments, so sorry if you meant it in a kind way.
@ButterFingers7924 Actually I have read all the books, however I'm old enough to have read better books and have better things to do with my life than to obsess over something that doesn't exist. So go back to whatever obsessive hole you crawled out of and think that doby getting killed is the worst thing since 9/11
@buk1237 Things you shouldn't bother to do if you don't like Harry Potter: watch a video about HP & leave a comment thinking you're better than it all.
@buk1237 Will do ;) Harry Potter doesn't exist?! Oh no! ...what if YOU don't exist and Harry Potter IS real! Yes that IS my final conclusion, you are nothing but a dead voice that is being droned out by people that actually have imaginations and hopes and dreams! :D (And if you actually had read the books you would know that quote did NOT come from the books, So more *LAUGH IN YOUR FACE* >:D And I'm sure the books you've read, are fictious as is HP so the books you've read aren't real either.)
@ArgenaZolla Becase my favourite bookshop was up in Victoria. So we'd go up there to get the Canadian/British editions since we had both sets of the books.
It doesn't really matter which way you spell stuff as long as you are consistent and your audience understands what you are saying. But of you are turning in a paper or publishing in the US, you should probably follow their rules. Same goes for the British ones.
@harrytwilight Because I listened to PotterCast and I didn't really need to listen to both because they share the same news and stuff, for the most part. Also, I am friends with the PotterCasters, so it's fun listening to friends.
In case you were wondering my favourite book was probably Half-blood Prince and my favourite film was probably Prisoner of Azkaban.
As a huge cinema fan, I feel Potter has done so much for British cinema. It's brought huge British names into Hollywood, and, well, I just love it. I'm sad in a way that it will end this summer. The magic will live on though.
last one i promise! rupert grint lives in this village nearby to my town, and i often see him driving round in his huge, bright orange land rover :D MY CLAIM 2 FAME!!!
it kinda looks like you're not wearing a shirt throughout this video... not trying to criticize, i just thought i'd mention it in case you weren't aware, and wanted to try to avoid such things in the future... also, hi, i love your thoughtful videos.
Harry Potter has been the biggest influence in my life since I was about 3 but I've always been too young to go to Premieres etc and now it's too late D:
also yeah "english" spelling should be used because it's the "english" language, the arrogance of some americans bugs the hell out of me when they spell things the american way then profess it to be the definitive, correct way!
@TheNeonBlues My feelings on that PoA film are that the Marauders are practically my favourite part of Potter and that film ruined any chance of a good film story line for them. And the shrunken heads were annoying. They nailed Harry's hair, though! xD
@owlssayhooot my personal thoughts on the films is that they are generally excellent, although in my opinion not as good as the books. I think in many ways the philosiphers stone was the worst (film), however it is definitely my favourite one, it is just so, so magical :D especially with all the challenges, it's just amazing. And yes, i totally agree, deathly allows is my favourite book too ^__^ Also, it makes sense that people should spell things the way they were tought too(:

@owlssayhooot Ah, yeah, that is true. Although, on the whole, I thought the content from the book was adhered to pretty well. It's definitely the most well-directed film and is legions beyond the first two films in terms of production quality. Don't get me wrong, though, I've adored all the films. If not just for nostalgia. Hey, wait, maybe I'm not old enough for nostalgia yet...

And Scrooge was a British character living in London, written by Charles Dickens, an English writer.

Technically Americanised English is also a great form of use for the English Language.
But as you should know, all forms of English are deriviative, even British English.
British English, Gael-English, Americanised English, and so on. For different areas.

Something about people talking about Harry Potter just makes me happy/proud/etc.

there are aren't they? I'm going at midnight to DH pt 2...
TheGravityCaitlin94 8 months ago
This bit is not so much for Kayley, but more for the angry commenters:
I am Scottish and I don't care about English vs American spelling front, both are correct. The "Americanization" is simpler in a lot of ways, but the English was the original. Whatever.
On the English/British language front, it is called the English language so I totally accept it being called the English spelling, but calling it British is cool too. Kayley corrected herself so let her be.
Also I love your passion Kayley :)

SparklyPlum 8 months ago
@andreweatsbugs It did suck, but there are midnight releases for the final film at cineworld (amongst others) - book your tickets before they all sell out!
towelmuppet 8 months ago
YAY!! You spell in Canadian! That makes me much happier than it should. I think words look prettier with U's anyways. I remember when I was little though, I spelled the American way for a while because I was too lazy to put the U in.
OMGTHERERNONAMESAAGH 8 months ago
@JManHobbs So you're saying people in foreign countries who can't speak English didn't actually read Harry Potter? Yes, they did. And just because I read harry potter in the American English versions doesn't make me any less of a fan. You're just ignorant for saying that.
MissPotterPlease 8 months ago
@MissPotterPlease FYI. I believe the word you're looking for is arrogant not ignorant. Dictionary meaning for:
Arrogant: Someone who behaves in a proud, unpleasant way towards others because they believe they are more important over others.
Ignorant: Someone that does not know things they should know.
Secondly, some others did not read it the way it was intented by J.K. Rowling. In some foreign countries the term 'house' can not be explained and the way it being written to be read was confused.
ButterFingers7924 8 months ago
@ButterFingers7924 But that would make him ignorant for not knowing that a few minor language differences don't really matter.
1313hahaha 8 months ago
Being British, as far as i'm concerned if you didn't read Harry Potter in British English, you didn't read Harry Potter.
JManHobbs 8 months ago
@JManHobbs Being American, as far as I'm concerned it does not the hell matter what language you read as long as it's Harry Potter.
1313hahaha 8 months ago
@andreweatsbugs I'm in the UK, my local, independent cinema, which I saw every other HP movie at wasn't permitted to do a midnight release by WB. The large chain cinemas, like VUE, are allowed though.

CptBubbleMoose 8 months ago
I sometimes even go so far as to say that Deathly Hallows is my favourite book not just of the series, but of all time. And that gets a lot of sneering disrespect from other English majors, but I'm just all "COME AT ME, BRO". Haha you using 'bro' took me by surprise for some reason. I'm going to make that my phrase of the day (not that I actually have 'phrases of the day').
fantabulous123 8 months ago
admittedly I've never read the books, but I love the films and am feeling like my best friend has broken sacred tradition by being too busy on the weekend it comes out so I'm going on my own.
nukemz 8 months ago
Though I'm so very different from you, I feel like we'd be great friends and get along-because of Harry Potter. If it hadn't been for Potter, I'd probably see your channel and leave, thinking you're just a redhead nerd. Glad Potter changed my life and how I see things :)
AlicetheShort 8 months ago
@AlicetheShort "just a redhead nerd"?? Jesus! Backhanded compliment much?! I'm offended and it's not even directed at me...
fantabulous123 8 months ago
@fantabulous123 Hmmm? What's a backhanded compliment? And yes, a redhead nerd is a compliment in many ways, but I wouldn't have known that if it weren't for Potter. So... yes?
AlicetheShort 8 months ago
@AlicetheShort Oh, sorry if you meant it as a nice thing. I took the word "just" to mean a limited classification, as if Kayley is defined and restricted to being no more than a redheaded nerd, and for that matter "redhead" came across as a negative connotation. I guess the internet makes it hard to distinguish insults from compliments, so sorry if you meant it in a kind way.
fantabulous123 8 months ago
@fantabulous123 Haha that's alright! I suppose I should have phrased it differently! Nah, Kayley's more than just a redheaded nerd! It's alright!

It's funny that you mention the English editions of the books b/c I have been really wanting to buy a boxed set of them recently.
Also, you didn't go to LeakyCon 2009? I would have thought you'd have been all over that.

@ButterFingers7924 Actually I have read all the books, however I'm old enough to have read better books and have better things to do with my life than to obsess over something that doesn't exist. So go back to whatever obsessive hole you crawled out of and think that doby getting killed is the worst thing since 9/11

It doesn't really matter which way you spell stuff as long as you are consistent and your audience understands what you are saying. But of you are turning in a paper or publishing in the US, you should probably follow their rules. Same goes for the British ones.

The magic will live on though.

also yeah "english" spelling should be used because it's the "english" language, the arrogance of some americans bugs the hell out of me when they spell things the american way then profess it to be the definitive, correct way!
destijl1337 8 months ago 8
@destijl1337 I think they're both right. Americans are taught to spell things that way, so they are right. Same goes for the British and such.

TheNeonBlues 8 months ago 4
@TheNeonBlues My feelings on that PoA film are that the Marauders are practically my favourite part of Potter and that film ruined any chance of a good film story line for them. And the shrunken heads were annoying. They nailed Harry's hair, though! xD
owlssayhooot 8 months ago 22
