  • Beautiful!!!! gave me chills!!!

  • Listen and learn, Sting. Listen and learn.

  • And the unmistakable, sweet voice of Bill McGlaughlin in the background.

  • does this song really have a sexual connotation to it? the part where he says "to touch to kiss to die" ?

  • @deonaka I think so, especially since there is the french proverb "the small death" meaning the orgasm

  • does anyone know of an acapella group that is as good or better than this group? i have such a passion for john dowlands music and no one seems to do his songs justice as does this group! thanks much for your help...whoever you are lol

  • @deonaka There are 2 other groups - The King's Singers and Chanticleer - all three groups are phenomenal vocal groups

  • leaves modern music for dead. Relaxing and profound. No histrionics or bullshit.

  • Beautiful.. but slow.. And I would like to hear more passion, especially in the chorus..

  • I'm confused now... nexxie96 stated this was recorded in the 1970's - wouldn't have been the ORIGINAL Swingle Singers, not the NEW Swingle Singers? This YouTube has it entitled "Come Again - The New Swingle Singers"

  • @gluefish this recording is from the 80s not the 70s ~ in the photo Ward Swingle appears older than the others.

  • do you guys really hate the way sting sang that song?

  • @deonaka

I think that's because this song has great values ... it's a masterpiece in classical music and it has to be sung properly.

That's why Sting's version disturb many people, especially those who cherish classical music.

I personnaly prefer the smooth choir versions so far but I think Sting didn't destroy the song ... at least it's not like he turned it into a big rock style thing !!

  • @musiccoloratura I agree and would add that Sting's "reach" (number of views on YT) is greater than all of the other wonderful performances, such as this one, combined = influence, discovery, et al.

  • Wonderful to listen to the beauty of the Swingle Singers perform "straight" (no jazz) in this great work by Dowland.

  • Bella canción y muy bella interpretación

  • Listen to Sting singing this. Passionate.

  • sting was annoying, infact it put me off this song, but when i heard how many others sung it, i loved it

  • @gluefish Your sarcasm is delightful.

  • I feel like a broken record asking this, but when and where was this done, who is the narrator/host/introducer?

  • this was recorded back in the 1970's it was entitled The Swingle Singers Songs for Madrigals and Madriguys...it's on vinyl but I don't think it's available on CD.

  • We are doing this song in my choral conducting class. I've been studying the score for a week and couldn't figure out how I wanted to approach and conduct the piece. After listening to this, I am now inspired and have begun to form an interpretation of the piece that I feel is much more faithful to the composers intentions. Thanks for uploading this great piece of music!

  • Very beautiful. Amazing.

  • I love it!

  • I nearly come in my briefs. Thank you for your subtle interpretation and understanding the nuances of the song.

Too many groups just hammer out the song. Making love is more than hammering along. Take time to embrace, to kiss, to sigh then will come the beautiful moment of petite morte..

  • This song still ROCKS after cca 400 yrs!! My all-time fav!

  • the best way ive ever heard

  • very good!

  • What a beautiful song :-)

  • Is Sue Bickley the same as the excellent British mezzo Susan Bickley? One of the people on the photo looks like her...

  • yes

  • they do not phrase it very good,,, to perfect
