It's after watching videos like these that the debates between Theists, Deists and Atheists seem rediculous. We have been civilized for only thousands of years, and industrialized for hundreds and still have to use artists to sketch out planets light years away because they won't fit in a single pixle of our current instruments, and we have the audacity to claim that we know exactly how we came about. A universe infinite in size from a perspective of what is a dot in a tiny solar system.
All the planets we have found so far are in a metaphorical stones throw from our system. Knowing this, I know there are other species out there, somewhere in this vast galaxy of ours.
@shmuli9 The topic is somewhat non-intuitive. Being closer to us sometimes helps. But there's a lot more too it. Perhaps the most important factor is the orientation of the system. If the system does not happen to be edge-on WRT us, then we will never be able to detect with the transit method. And Kepler is only looking at distant stars, anyway. The radial velocity method can handle more variance in the angle. But if the plane of the system is perpendicular to us, we'd never detect planets.
@shmuli9 "I'm not sure in which direction Alpha Centauri A and B are oriented"
Nobody does. If we detect planets orbiting a star, using either the radial velocity or transit method, we can say something about orientation. Otherwise not. I believe that the transit method (Kepler) tells us more about orientation. Statistically, I think it works out to something like 1 in 100 systems having an orientation such that the transit method will work. But please don't quote me on that. I didn't verify it.
soooo TIRED of being told i have to IMAGINE expoplanets but that i'm a stupidass because i believe in God. Whatever. I'm not gonna IMAGINE JACK SHIT. I Love space videos and will thumbs up any WHERE I ACTUALLY SEE but I don't go for THEORETICAL BULLSHIT-it will always get a thumbs down from me. sorry. Scientist have been WRONG WAY TOO MANY TIMES for me to believe their bullshit. :)
@hotrodzwife You do know that all this (just like EVERYTHING) was made possible by science? Especially space travel and space observation requires more science than anywhere else, so you might wanna give science a bit more credit.
@hotrodzwife Then you should reevaluate your irrational beliefs. (Hint: Your mother was clearly wrong.) In fact, the data confirming the existence of exoplanets is quite solid. Their gravitational effects on their parent stars is now easily detectable. And Kepler's use of the transit method of detection is nothing short of brilliant. If you are tired of being a stupid-ass, then stop being a stupid-ass. Simple as that. QED.
@HotKisses4739 WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU POST THAT ON A GODDAMN SCIENCE VIDEO!!?? i mean SERIOUSLY! NO-ONE wants to know that, and nobody asked. More importantly,Why the FUCK would you WANT to do that?!
I love the the speech tempo and sound of voice of the narrator! It's very soothing, and not so > I'm sorry < hollywood-american, which is a good thing. Also, interesting videos and keep up the very good work!
Thanks for all the brilliant vids, Spacerip. It is a great inspiration for young people like me and helps me to illustrate the vastness of space in my head. It is to a very large extent poetic and wounderful :)
that was great, you certainly would have to be a fool to believe we are the only life bearing planet in the Universe. That said 'it is a strange evolution when people have come to believe that we are the universes` greatest collusion ,when really were just a collection of cells ,over-rating ourselves, and avoiding the truth.'
Nice video. I was wondering if you did, or could, make a video about stars that have been ejected from galaxies, or planets ejected from solar systems. Always been interesting to me, these "ronin" objects...
love ya SpaceRip. this channel inspired me to get into astronomy, and I've decided I want to work for NASA when im older(im 16 now). i live in florida so kennedy space center here i come :D
@ViperstudiosNG the bible tells more about the stars than most people can recognize. While the knowledge of certain scientific data was not available regarding the universe (perhaps) back then, they were not ignorant or "primitive" in their respect to the stars and the universe around them. They have inspired peoples for centuries past and will continue to do so for centuries to come. We are made of space stuff. I think they realized that back then too. Peace.
@SpaceRip You guys are awesome, probably the most high quality astronomy videos on Youtube (then again, I'm not sure). Just wondering when your next Cosmic Journeys video will come out.
@endejan "probably" the best? definitely the best!
we are shooting for end of January for another episode. We're tackling the prospects that a "gravitationally-locked" planet like Gliese 581G can be life bearing. There are many interesting questions about atmospheric circulation, lack of day-night cycles, and more. So stay tuned! And thanks for being interested.
@SpaceRip I don't know. Tdarnnel is doing incredable, inspiring videos here on YouTube, and they are, at least, as good as the videos you guys are making. He is a team of one and his videos are wonderful. You guys should hire him and then you will be the best...hands down...no debate.
totally awesome, this just rekindles my belief that there HAS TO BE life outside of our solar system, I mean its just mathematically certain, given the number of stars and planets that we know about and can see, let alone the ones we don't know about and/or can't see . . . the drake equation etc. etc.
good god damn I can't wait until we find proof of extra-terrestrial life
thanks for uploading all your vids SpaceRip, I surely appreciate your efforts at spreading knowledge and wonder
Not only does art and literature fill our imagination video games and movies do a grea job as well, I just love this, Space is so interesting in many different ways.
I think it is awesome that all of these exoplanets are out there and I hope we can explore them one day, but I also love how they so mysterious and open to individual imaginative interpretation.
Thanks SpaceRip, always look forward to your video's. great editing and amazing to watch, happy new year. And may next year be a great year for space exploration.
Thanks for the videos. We can learn about what is visible and discoverable in space around us. You have talked about the universe or universes. However, what about space itself? Is there the end and the beginning of space? Is space that we are in enclosed or not? Or can we say" space is limitless"? Is it fruitless to talk about the nature of space. Please give us lectures on space.
On NASA's planetquest website, it states 500 planets discovered... And none are earth-like yet... You know what that means ? It means other Earthlike planets are freakin' far !
@Quartrez You do realize that the only exoplanets discovered are giant gas planets right?, there gravitational pull is strong enough to move the sun slightly and small black dots might be seen as well. Earth size planets are just to small.
@Armedias I know. But mind you earth-size planets move stars too, in fact anything that orbits another thing, however small it is, moves the object it's orbiting with.
@RyuDarragh Gileese 581g is close enough to earth-like to be a likely candidate for colonization from the information I have seen... and at 20 lightyears travelling at 50% (the fastest possible speed I can see us attaining) it is a 40 year trip. More than likely between 40 and 80 given time for acceleration and deceleration.
@PinkProgram: 50% is probably a bit slow for most missions. More likely they'll push it to relativistic speeds and it'll be 5-10 Years for the travellers. As much as some folks panned Avatar by Cameron, his ship and its specifications/design are as close to parctical as you can get (he made extensive use of a web site called "atomicrocket", which I highly recommend for an excellent treatment for all things releted to present day ideas on travel to the stars).
If you believe in God, believe in God and thank God for everything and for our inclinations toward knowledge. If you believe in something other than God, believe in whatever you believe and thank it for the same things. If you don't believe in God at all, then just go straight to thanking humanity for bothering to know stuff. After you've taken your respective route, shut up.

@callmesmorz Haha, I actually came back to check if it really was so! Unfortunately, no everybody likes being adviced on preferred behaviour so I'm down to three or so.
@Wyndstarthedruid ummm are you sure about that? Actually they will never start up the part that creates a black hole because the machine isn't really designed to do that. @ivanxdxd2008 Religious comments in an explicitly scientific video, with the hidden or suspected intention to cause reactions in people more sensitive to these things... I would say it can be classified as "trolling".
