Sorry for the late response (I may have answered this on MSN already).

I use Adobe After Effects.

However, if Vegas is similar, this is basically a vector path (all 90º angles) with a large stroke, then a glow on top of the stroke on some weird transfer mode that hides the other stuff.

Then I turned that layer 3D, put in some 3D text layers, positioned them correctly, then put in a camera with a 200 mm lens if I remember correctly (yeah, huge). Then I just moved it around :D

Also, all wells are technically riding if they're caused by extended line interceptions making up for the relatively low frame rate (as I think they are), unless you mean sled contact, in which only the sled-based wells would be riding.
