I eat meat and I can say it is disgusting, AND, also can say it is cruel, because they kill the birds by drowning, which is not a very nice way to die.
Apart from the bird’s status as an endangered species, the controversy surrounding eating it included the way it was prepared and consumed. The bird is captured, force-fed oats and millet, soaked in Armagnac, and roasted alive. The gourmet then eats the bird whole, bones and all, while wearing a napkin over his or her head to soak up all the heavenly aromas and, according to The Wine Spectator, “to hide from God.”
guys, the thing is that an animal has to be killed with dignity and without suffering, otherwise, its cruel! What happenens in nature normally? An animal who want to eat another animal tries to kill it asap. As to eggs, its so simple to hold a few hens as I do for instance, everyone should try and start with that. Imo also, you should be albe to kill and prepare a animal, if you want to eat it. Its general problem of our socienty, that people thinks that meats is from the shelf of a supermarket!
The blinding, forcefeeding and drowning parts are a little more terrible than other meats. Also, the religious connotations and monetary value that we've put on it make it even more ridiculous to carry out the act.
The way wikipedia describes the preparation and motives for preparation of it is absolutely disgusting, even if I do eat other meats. Try to keep things as cruelty free as possible, eh?
@showguyer sort of. they do it so they can catch the aromas of the meal and it is also believed to hide yourself from god. mainly bcoz the french centeries ago blieved that eating the bird was a sin. but they did it anyway as a right of passage. i wuld explain how its a sin, but i dnt wnna write a story XD
The poor bird's eyes are plucked out, it is force fed for weeks and is later drowned in alcohol. I am sure you rich fuckers enjoy this, but beware that one day it is your children that will be skinned in public.
@turgore well thats a little sick. plus all the food we eat every day is most likely thru animals torture. i mean, the eggs u use for ur omlette culd av came from battry farms ¬¬
@turgore you eat chicken everyday, you eat steak, you eat eggs everyday, dont tell me you cry everytime before you eat, thats just pure BS...that bird was never was an endangered species, its just that people find it delicious..theres nothing to do with animal cruelty here...
@ChocolateExplosion, I hunt and kill animals for food and clothing and I am very concerned for the suffering of animals. Unlike these barbarians drowning that poor bird I try to kill my prey in the most humane way possible, bludgeoning them to death with a Wiffle bat.
@ChocolateExplosion Yes they can, and I will. It's cruel unusual way to dispatch the animal. Cattle slaughter is quick and looks about as painless as death can get (except for Kosher and Halal methods which are disgraceful and should be outlawed along with the religions that call for them). Roasting alive, skinning alive, filleting alive, skewering alive, drowning and all other sick shit is what makes me ashamed of my fellow man. Just 'cause I eat meat don't mean I don't care
@aaronrocs yes, OK you can say things.. but you sound like a deluded hypocrite. Anyone can think they care, but if you're not a vegan most of what you're saying is hot air designed to make yourself think you're nicer than you actually are
@HiggsyAndGinge If you wear leather, eat meat every day then you're the meat-eating equivalent of a junkie. And lecturing people about moral sources of heroin would seem completely ridiculous. Try and eat more fish, it's good for the brain.
@ChocolateExplosion Except it's not ridiculous, its a prefect parallel to what you're saying. Of course you're juts ignorant and biased. Eating bacon or having a leather coat does not put you in the same league as someone who enjoys foie gras or ortolan. Only those too stupid to do otherwise deal in extremes.
@HiggsyAndGinge It's not a perfect parallel, eating meat to survive is nothing like taking heroin, smoking weed or drinking alcohol. The act of surviving through consuming sustenance is completely different to taking drugs or drinking alcohol. You dont have the right to lecture people on animal cruelty if you eat meat, it is just absurd and patronizing. And you sound like you inhabit a world obsessed only with your own opinion of yourself and not reality.
@ChocolateExplosion And you can't see a little bit of yourself in that? hmmm. Well yeah okay, maybe it isn't a perfect parallel, but i stand by what i said about extremes, only those to stupid to differentiate deal in them.
@HiggsyAndGinge Did you get that from a fortune cookie, strange seeming as the whole point is differentiating between extremes. I'm extremely glad you personally research every item of clothing you wear and food you ever eat to find out exactly how the animal suffered, to see if it worse than your presumption of what an ortolan goes through. because if thats not the case, then you're just talking shit
@HiggsyAndGinge Oh dear, I grasp what you're saying, but i think it's wrong. this is about an issue, thinking about the issue, not convincing yourself you're right all the time by saying anything that pops into your head. The death of a handful of ortolan is not extreme, not compared to battery farming and slaughter on industrial scale. You support a daily holocaust of animals, but not an eccentric tradition done in small numbers on a very particular part of the globe. Mother fucking Theresa
@ChocolateExplosion I never, not even once, claimed to be good. Only that i wasn't 'evil'. I do think humans have the right to kill and eat animals, maybe that's wrong of me, but its an opinion, you're entitled to think otherwise. So yes, in my mind a small and extremely cruel tradition is worse than farming chickens and pigs etc. Because we eat those for sustenance, whereas this is just gluttony.
The problem is not primarily the way the birds are treated (which I agree is cruel), but that the bird's population is in decline and it could soon become endangered.
I don't understand the outrage over this. Most beef you eat comes from cows that spend their lives in cages pumped with steroids and no room to move before it's shot between the eyes with a powerful airgun. Most of your chicken comes from batteries of similar conditions before it's dehydrated, frozen, shipped to your country and then rehydrated and sold as "fresh". If you eat any kind of meat, it's cruel, end of. Don't be so hypocritical.
@sugarcanegray Well, I don't eat factory farmed beef/chicken (in fact, I think I eat any kind of land based meat about once a year and make sure of its source) and get my fish from sustainable harvested sources. Do I have the right to be outraged at this? I am not against eating meat, but I think that the way we do it in the US (and many other places) is unhealthy for ourselves. This preparation seems uneccesarily cruel.
@smilygrrl84 of course you could be outraged, but it wouldn't be at all logical if your outrage over Ortolan was bigger than your outrage over battery chickens and farmed beef. At least the Ortolan lives free until they're caught. It is a pretty cruel preparation, but they're not cooped up in tiny cages and severely mistreated for their entire lives only to be slaughtered...
So, the ortolan are captured, blinded (so that they would not move and lose any calories), force-fed (four times it's regular size), drowned in brandy (so that their little lungs would have a good burst of taste), and then roasted to be ready to eat. You should get death penalty by eating that bird.
@Arpapala the birds are free until they're caught and killed. Admittedly it's a pretty cruel way to die, but compare that to the beef and chicken we all eat which live truly horrible lives in captivity suffering overfeeding, no exercise and being pumped with steroids before being slaughtered...
@Arpapala in France they seem to have a much closer relationship with the animals they eat and the plates on their table. For example, boeuf is the word for both beef and cow, so they have little distinction between the living animal and the food on their table. So as far as their culture goes, there's nothing shocking about this particular dish, nor the preparation. I guess in countries like the UK and US, we're used to there being some distance between the living animal and our food.
The fact we have different words for the living animal and the meat when it comes to cows is due to the French invading Britain in 1066; since the common English were the ones farming the animal; they kept the old English word (being cow) for the animal; and as the meat was purchased and eaten by the French aristocracy; their name for cow (boeuf) has evolved into Beef. Both just being the most commonly used words. Evolution of Language.
@a7xdo and there's little doubt that this evolution of language has helped shape the two respective cultures to an extent. The French are far less squeamish when it comes to preparing and eating a large variety of animals compared to the Brits, not necessarily caused but certainly highlighted by these differences.
People don't understand. It's cruel not because it's killed. It's cruel because it's forced-fed, until its body swollen 4 times its normal size before it's killed. If you don't know what's that like, realize that force-feeding is a torturing method used in wars.
and thisd is difrent from eating any other type of meat why cause its cruel????? do you know what a slaughter house is the point is WHO GIVE A FUCK if you want to eat an animal you dont let it die of natural causes you kill them its the same damn thing wether its this or bacon everything is killed to eat
why cant some one make a pest this good to eat it would solve our over population of some invasive spices and people could have their fancy food party's
It is actually very good... We had our l'ortlans imported and put to rest before our chef prepared them... It is one of the only foods you can taste guilt in... I hated myself for a month...
I don't get why people are so outraged by this. The life of the factory-farmed cows, chickens, and pigs the rest of you eat (or eat byproducts of) are probably much, much worse. Seems odd to me that they'd ban this, but carry on with factory farming.
@animesis Ah. I guess endangerment would make sense. In terms of humane killing, eh... I dunno about that. Factory farmed livestock basically go through an automatic throat-slitter. But of course, if they squirm, the cut may not be clean. It's not unusual for livestock to wind up going through most of the process injured, but still alive.
In the UK farm animals are usually stunned with electric, arguably knocking them unconscious, though the stabbing is rather unpleasant to put it lightly, bleeding to death is alot less painful than drowning
@animesis Yeah, I lived in the UK a while. It's not quite as bad there as it is here. It still has a mild whiff of hypocrisy to me, though. That's government everywhere though, I suppose.
I have to say I dont agree too much with EU regulations and laws myself, an unelected group of people deciding laws I have to follow doesnt seem very democratic... I agree with the hypocrisy argument, especially considering what the EU has done to the UKs fishing industry and European overfishing in British waters
@ginganz13 They're not endangered whatsoever. In fact they're plentiful. They're disappearing from France mostly due to environmental reasons, not because they've been eaten into oblivion. The thing about migratory birds is, if one of their beloved rest stops on their route becomes uninhabitable, they go somewhere else. This is why they are vanished from France.
@SillyLitleGirl - They are on the IUCN Red list of threatened species - the estimated W European population is >600k - In Landes alone catches of 50K have been made - between 1960-80 they dissapeared from 17(!) French departments & their sale became ilegal.
The research into migratory patterns does not support your assertion - when the rest stops dissapear so do the birds - this is the reason such effort is put into preserving these areas.
What's barbaric? What's an inferior culture? What's a subhuman? How do you judge other people and finally what gives you the authority to judge others, to say what's right and wrong?
One last distinction you may or may not be able to make is "you people". I think, at this point, you'd have to recognize that my use of the English language pretty well demonstrates that I am "Asian" or "Chinese" or "Korean" or what have you only in an ethnic sense. I have certainly never had dog or fried-alive fish, and I am as guilty as you of perpetuating industrial slaughterhouses, but heck, why not bunch people together. It's so great to avoid individuality.
As to dogs, well, they aren't fried alive or drowned, so their entrance into this discussion is just a foray into strawman, as far as you are concerned. Consider this: pigs are more intelligent than dogs. We still eat them after killing them in less-than-adequate industrial complexes. By the way, once you start using profanity, your argument tends to become null and void in an academic or philosophical sense, so try not to do that next time.
Let's take it step by step...see if we can pound any logic into your skull:
1. Actually yes, I communicate with fish on a daily basis. In all seriousness, I'm sure you communicate with drowning birds as well, just to be sure of your point 2.
2. See above.
3. "Barbaric and insensitive"? Once again, you ignore the ridiculous mistreatment of these birds throughout their captivity (don't get me started on foie gras), and then presume to question simple biology? Genius.
@TriLunar121 That will teach you that Seth McFarlane never lies ;) in all seriousness, that show, along with Family Guy, has an extremely high level of intelligence driving its jokes.
@MrChampinion HAHAHA true... as well as southpark too :D I prefer American dad over Family guy tho idk why... but haha i love stewie no matter what lol
@theninjaswerehere I am Asian, and I have never eatten dog, all the fish I have ever ate has been dead(yes we eat raw salmon, but it was are ready dead when we get it)And let me ask you this, have you ever eatten Lobster? because they are alive when they are thrown into that big pot of bowling water.
@theninjaswerehere get off your soap box and shove it up your ass. All the way up your ass. I've never had food so fresh it was still gasping for air when I was devouring it, but I would in a heartbeat given the chance. You'll find out one day that for all your yelling and screaming that something is wrong and everyone should change their ways, nothing you ever do will change the way things are. You're just wasting your worthless breath. So save yourself some time and start enjoying life.
@YanTales 0,00001% of french people have eaten this in their lives. And I didn't see where the torturing part was. They catch the birds and kill them, which means that they've been living their lives free.
On the other hand, all the industrially-produced meat that you and millions of other stupid people who pretend to care about animal cruelty eat on regular basis were produced by having animals bred in indescribably unbearable conditions and then killed violently.
@YanTales I was expecting this one. Chosing not to eat meat is a respectable choice. Being ignorant and arogant on the other hand, isn't. So i'll leave you in the "millions of stupid people" category.
Can't imagine how that would taste. True; being drowned isn't as bad as being burned or boiled alive as is done to lobsters. I worked with a guy who cooked turtles for soup while they were still alive and crying. I couldn't do that. Luckily he only told me about it and never did that in front of me. We don't do stuff like that where I work.
i think the cruelty comes from how they force feed it and then drown it in brandy.
although personally i think some people put too much energy into preventing animal suffering when there is millions, if not billions of humans suffering and unable to have a decent life
i read about these in the first chapter of Bourdain's new book. Why the hell didn't they eat the head?>!?!!??!?!?!!?!?!?!!?!?! wtf what a waste. im still jealous.
I think tiny birds are very underrated. How many of these idiot oiseaus fly into buildings every day? i say lets grill em up! or maybe deep fry after a dredge in tapioca starch and then dredged in black bean sauce. mmmmmmmmmmmm crispy.
@edgexxi OMFG I LOVE THIS COMMENT!!!! HAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAAHA AMAERICAN DAD IS THE SHIT, but seriously ortolan are supposed to be delicious just saying but i loved that scene with barbara doing celine with ortolan hahahhaha
Frankly, like the guy says... drowned in armagnac is hardly a dishonourable way to go when you compare it to how cattle/livestock is usually slaghtered - no one cares about that do they! I certainly don't, and i'll eat any meat anyone puts on a plate because that's what being a man is.
They clearly should breed them for consumption like livestock.
For the most part I don't really care how an animal is killed. I do however find it pretty terrible when humans wipe out an entire species because they taste good. They are illegal for a reason. Tsk tsk to those of you who are excited to eat one, and a sinlge capital letter TSK to you Clarkson.
@ianoo11 you do realize that this bird is categorized as "least concern" on the endangered species list don't you? and it's only illegal to SELL ortolan, it is legal to EAT them.
I'm a vegetarian. I used to hunt rabbits and deer as well as eat domesticated meat. I just came to the realization over time that I experience fear and pain and I don't want to inflict that upon other sentient life. I would eat meat again only if there wasn't sufficient plant foods.
@cornelius386 If there was only some way to force all carnivores to stop frightening rabbits and other animals, then eating them. Why can't we force wolves to become vegans?
Take a look at the video of the supposedly live fish being eaten in Asia. It's dead for one, but it has incited reactions such as "chinks should all die", and "China should be nuked". And then, this video concerning drowning birds, a far more complex animal, incites no reaction whatsoever. And you wonder why most races see white people as the most barbaric and insensitive. They never wipe their finger before pointing to other people's spots.
I want to try it...

I don't get why people are so outraged by this. The life of the factory-farmed cows, chickens, and pigs the rest of you eat (or eat byproducts of) are probably much, much worse. Seems odd to me that they'd ban this, but carry on with factory farming.
GonzoNomad 6 months ago 3
@GonzoNomad
supposedly endangerd, and farm animals are killed in a much more humane way
animesis 6 months ago
@animesis Ah. I guess endangerment would make sense. In terms of humane killing, eh... I dunno about that. Factory farmed livestock basically go through an automatic throat-slitter. But of course, if they squirm, the cut may not be clean. It's not unusual for livestock to wind up going through most of the process injured, but still alive.
GonzoNomad 6 months ago
@GonzoNomad
In the UK farm animals are usually stunned with electric, arguably knocking them unconscious, though the stabbing is rather unpleasant to put it lightly, bleeding to death is alot less painful than drowning
animesis 6 months ago
@animesis Yeah, I lived in the UK a while. It's not quite as bad there as it is here. It still has a mild whiff of hypocrisy to me, though. That's government everywhere though, I suppose.
GonzoNomad 6 months ago
@GonzoNomad
I have to say I dont agree too much with EU regulations and laws myself, an unelected group of people deciding laws I have to follow doesnt seem very democratic... I agree with the hypocrisy argument, especially considering what the EU has done to the UKs fishing industry and European overfishing in British waters
animesis 6 months ago
@GonzoNomad - Because they are endangered, domestic animals are not - they have disapeared from some departements of France purely through hunting.
ginganz13 6 months ago
@ginganz13 They're not endangered whatsoever. In fact they're plentiful. They're disappearing from France mostly due to environmental reasons, not because they've been eaten into oblivion. The thing about migratory birds is, if one of their beloved rest stops on their route becomes uninhabitable, they go somewhere else. This is why they are vanished from France.
SillyLitleGirl 6 months ago
@SillyLitleGirl - They are on the IUCN Red list of threatened species - the estimated W European population is >600k - In Landes alone catches of 50K have been made - between 1960-80 they dissapeared from 17(!) French departments & their sale became ilegal.
The research into migratory patterns does not support your assertion - when the rest stops dissapear so do the birds - this is the reason such effort is put into preserving these areas.
ginganz13 6 months ago
@ginganz13 well its a shame that they are so delicious i'm afraid they are destined for extinction...such is the way of life on the planet earth

@theninjaswerehere
Informer3X 7 months ago
@theninjaswerehere
Informer3X 7 months ago
@theninjaswerehere
Genius.

I've never had food so fresh it was still gasping for air when I was devouring it, but I would in a heartbeat given the chance. You're just wasting your worthless breath. So save yourself some time and start enjoying life.

stupid fat french people torture birds to eat it whole. pathetic humans
YanTales 8 months ago
@YanTales 0,00001% of french people have eaten this in their lives. And I didn't see where the torturing part was. They catch the birds and kill them, which means that they've been living their lives free.
On the other hand, all the industrially-produced meat that you and millions of other stupid people who pretend to care about animal cruelty eat on regular basis were produced by having animals bred in indescribably unbearable conditions and then killed violently.
So who's stupid again?
bridochon54 8 months ago
@bridochon54 how about i tell you that I don't eat meat, would that shut you up?
YanTales 8 months ago

@cornelius386 If there was only some way to force all carnivores to stop frightening rabbits and other animals, then eating them. Why can't we force wolves to become vegans?
CliffM85 1 year ago
Take a look at the video of the supposedly live fish being eaten in Asia. It's dead for one, but it has incited reactions such as "chinks should all die", and "China should be nuked". And then, this video concerning drowning birds, a far more complex animal, incites no reaction whatsoever. And you wonder why most races see white people as the most barbaric and insensitive. They never wipe their finger before pointing to other people's spots.
