We need to pass a law prohibiting the networks from putting their promos and logos on the screen during the program. It is infuriating. It is out of control. Do it during the commercials, if they must. They are all guilty of it, some worse than others. Enough!
The Mackins should've been brought back to compete on Ray Combs' first "Family Feud" episode as returning champions in 1988, but weren't asked back or invited for some reason.
I've watched this episode at least a dozen times, & every time I see it I get quite emotional & want to break down in tears. Richard Dawson's brief speech at the beginning is very heartfelt, & the studio audience was on it's feet and applauding, paying heed to every single word Richard was saying. I'll bet every member of that audience was shedding tears! Richard is such a master at what he does! Thanks for making "Family Feud" the institution it has become, Sir Richard!
@ChihuahuaboyDH I know this is a two mont old post, but I have to agree with you totally. When it comes down to it, when you look the phrase "Class Act", there should be a picture of Richard Dawson... just to name one game show host.
Anyone know if Gene's inflection was different when he said Richard's first name in the intro for this? I ask only because the video cuts that part off.
Funny thing I noticed. Starting at about :40, look in the third row of an audience. There's a guy in a dark blue suit that's just obsessed about getting on TV. He isn't applauding Richard, but himself because a camera is pointed in his direction. A couple more shots afterwards proves this.
As weird as this sounds, I actually played this open with the theme from the '94 Feud, found at the Television Production Music Museum site. To me, it sounds like it fits pretty well.
I love the theme from the 76-85 version, but I pray to God that the current Feud goes back to music from either the first version, but more wanting the 94 Feud!!!
This was the last show of the original run on ABC in 1985. Family Feud would not return to TV until July 4th, 1988 with Ray Combs. The official first run was 1976-1985. Second run 1988-1995 (Combs/Dawson return) Current run 1999-present.
Listen to the answers to see how the world has changed so much. Mothers made kids wear mittens scarfs etc. etc. and onbly 2 people said seatbelts. Today, they make kids wear bicycle helmets, knee pads, mouth guards....it's sad how the world has changed, and not for the better.
He's not dead...they have him cryogenically frozen with Ted Williams and Walt Disney, and Elvis, and they are going to thaw them out when the economy is better!
Has anyone heard anymore of when The Best of Family Feud (which will include this finale) will be released on DVD? My guess is that this coming January, exactly one year after All-star Family Feud came out.
I wish that they would at least bring Richard back as a guest host for one taping of Family Feud. The ratings for that show would no doubt be through the roof!
Richard Dawson did a superb job hosting Family Feud for 9 years on ABC and syndication from 1976-1985. The minute long standing ovation was very gracious for his final show. Was always kissing the ladies on the show in such a funny way. He was a fun and classy host to watch.
@SHAUNERDANIEL No, I think it had something to do with the ratings. The kissing issue was raised in the first season, I think. He said he would stop if the viewers wanted him to. So there was this letter writing campaign, with the majority of the letters saying they liked the kissing, so it continued on. To me, it was no big deal. Besides, a good 90% of the women seemed to like it.
This was the best version. Even the announcer was the centerpiece. Always telling those families they were ready for action, and getting on their marks, set, and ready to play!
There was a "Pilot" previous to the 1976 ABC debut of this show. Dawson hosted it, and Johnny Olson was the announcer. The set was also different - weird looking. I believe it aired in '75. I've been looking all over youtube for it, and no one seems to have it. If anybody has this, or knows where it is, please let me know! Thanks! RICHARD DAWSON FOREVER!!!
That man in the front row with white hair seen applauding, is that Mark Goodson? It looks like him at the 40 second mark wearing a brownish-tan colored jacket and a white shirt. You can see him a little better at the 1 minute mark.
June 14th, 1985. The end of an era. Some of the best gameplay by the Mackins. It's too bad Richard didn't joke around as much (excluding this episode for obvious reasons) towards the end of the run as he had prior to the this season. He seemed tired and rushed and perhaps he was due to the $400 scoring format put into place at the beginning of the 9th year.
ABC should of kept Family Feud on a little longer. I liked Ray Combs version a lot but Richard Dawson version is the best. Even when it was moving a little slow it was good.ABC haven't had a Game Show again until Match Game 1990 which lasted 1 year. And after that nothing.
Ironically, Bert Convy was slated to host the 1990 revival of Match Game and I remember seeing a pilot with him hosting. But he fell sick after he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and couldn't host. Ross Shaffer took over as host.
Once ABC cancelled "Familky Feud," ABC would flounder in the daytime game show market from 1985-until after they canned "Match Game" (1990-91 version w/ Ross Shafer), in which point ABC was the first network to throw in the towel with daytime GS's for good.
Richard Dawson... What an amazing man. The best Family Feud host ever, and my favorite panelist on Match Game. So sweet how he got emotional during that show... But no wonder he did! Such great times on that show, I'm sure he had... From "SEPTEMBER" to some other whacky answers... Legendary... And Richard Dawson's got it all. SURVEY SAYS... WE LOVE YOU, RICHARD!
This was a pretty dumb game, as was Match Game--it was the hosts and the guests (in Match Game's case) that made the show. Richard was wonderful.
