How I did it was I charted a pattern on graph paper. Then I followed the pattern that way. I started with the main design in the center. (it was a deer head. ) then I added a background of plain blue in an oval shape. Then I designed a border of pine trees around the edges. You could use a simple cross-stitch chart too. When I finished I made a double crochet border around the entire afghan.
