We are leaving out a lot of credit to Kelly Schoppa who have a number 1 with this song. Yes Terry wrote the song but kelly put his own style with this.
I met Jason at a show recently. My sister knows him personally from Austin, Texas, and I was fortunate enough to meet him. Very nice man, and an amazing player/singer. A few days later I went out to get the mail, and there was a letter from Jason saying he wants to play together when he is in the area next. Very, very nice man.
Hi @buddyeagle. You're right that the song was written by Stafford, along with Paul Fraser, and recorded by Stafford in 1973. But the best known version is still the one recorded by Strait un 1982. My own favorite cover, of course, is the one by Asleep at the Wheel. But thanks for reminding me of Stafford. I should have given him the credit he deserves.
I might be completely wrong but don't you think his performance of this wonderful song kinda' 'made' George Strait the famous musician that he (still) is?
In any event, this is one of my favorite live performances by Jason (and also by Strait)
Too bad JR hasn't released it on CD - yet.
I never tire of listening to either version and I love the subtle ways that they are different and both EXCELLENT!
It's only because of Jason's stunning preformances of the music of some of America's living legends of country music that I even heard of some of these guys!
What a find!
We can hear the love and respect you have for the honorable Mr. George Strait in the delicately passionate way your fingers caress this BEAUTIFUL song.
@2c4u22 They have played in various forms for 40 years,in a large part happily taking in up and coming musicians & singers who later made it big in their own right.

Looks like AATW is about to lead me to another new discovery. Can't wait. Terry Stafford must be one talented and terrific guy.

Yes, Ras.
Ray Benson sure has a way of finding these gems.
Of course, Jason's family tie to a very dear and famous musician didn't hurt him one single bit!
Know who that would be?
