  • She improves with each record. A hidden gem!

  • Fantastic track

  • 3 days to go to 31 :)

  • real talent right there, pity no on else sees it

  • Outstanding musicianship all round!

  • Rob Lowe plays bass?!?!?!

  • oh God, having to see a ad for major a-hole, Roy Blunt!!

  • these lyrics rule so much that I find myself ripping them off sometimes

  • fantastica

  • LOL: "From the album 'Effin' Smilers..."

    Great sound, by the way...

  • Amazing beauty! She smiles -and sings from her soul!

  • HB, Ashley. Things are better or different, are they?

  • What a perfect setting for an "Aimee Mann performance". Very intimate. Say, is that Michael Penn playing beside her?

  • @fk7at nop.

  • Is this recorded in 1991? Thats when aimee was 31

  • Aimee is a fantastic writer and performer. She could have fit perfectly into "Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young" band. The shame of it all is that in this first decade of 2000, she throws "pearls before swines." Most can't appreciate her musical genious and talent.

  • I don't know where I was while she was playing this beautiful music..awesome and brilliant..5 stars

  • i ADORE HER, MET HER MANY X AND YET MUST COMMENT: 90% OF HER SONGS ARE THE SAME CHORDS ETC..BUT GREAT....AMAZING VOICE

  • I have to agree with the assessment of her "harmonic language" - and have to admit that, as much as I have always loved her stuff, I don't buy much any more. Aimee - push the envelope, even if it's a failure. It's time to move on to the next artistic level.

  • Too right! Smilers is a great album. I love the fact that whereas "The Forgotten Arm" had a 'live' sound and more guitars, Aimee decided to change it up again this time and create a more keyboard-based recording. Her song-writing is unbelievably consistent and strong and each album has a slightly different sound or theme. In my opinion she really is one of the most under-rated artists of our time.

  • The other day, as a cousin was all braggin' about how awesome and hot Madonna is for someone her age, I introduced her to Aimee. She totally ignored me, but then I realized: Aside from the well known fact that Aimee is by far one of the greatest artist and female artists in the world. and has a greater voice.... she is so beautiful! not hot! beyond that! And she is around Madonna's age, who pales near Aimee. but of course she doen't need to put on some cleavaged tights to draw attention.

  • Yes you are right. Aimme is an actual SONGWRITER, who writes great hooks, melodies, and song lyrics. The American music landscape, and radio needs someone like her. Since 'Til Tuesday she

delivers the goods, and her good songwriting endures as the years pass.

  • Purchased the 'Smilers' CD and was not disappointed. Aimee is a great songwriter/singer. Makes for some very pleasurable driving in this crummy Seattle traffic.

  • she has a beautiful voice. nice song too

  • She's such an exceptional song-writer. I LOVE this song.

  • Love it...and I am 31 today ;)

  • Those who know, know!

  • Just brillant, shes great..sometimes its hard to believe shes not as well know as some others out there..thanks for posting!

  • Simplemente GENIAL! Amo a Aimee Mann, this song describes exactly what I'm going through right now, it has such a magic that is not easy to describe.

  • Where have I been all these years? I have been missing out big time not having an Aimee Mann CD...will be running, not walking to the music store as soon as I get a chance. -Paul-

  • Paul your not the only one, I have given my Aimee Mann CD's to many and have never seen them again and I have had to purchase them over and over again. EVERYONE of her 6 CD's are not just good, there great !!!

  • Ha, ha... thats pretty funny, not that you lost your CD's but that your "friends" have not returned them. Possession is 90% of ownership for some people.

  • can't we all get this correct?....there's the word there (placement), they're (they are), and their (possession). not that tough. practice.

  • just wrote it fast man without thinking that's all. thx i don't need the practice... well aware of the difference. the comment was not needed. could care less whether it is correct or not.

  • maybe u do care. i'm just sayn' --

sometimes I pretend to not care when really I do.

  • maybe you pretend dude, seriously i do not. Let it be, this is about Aimee Mann and her talent, not an english lesson. not being sarcastic it is just that I don't care. like i said, i wrote the messege fast and wrote down the wrong version of the word without thinking, or caring either way.

  • don't u listen to Aimee's lyrics? we all pretend!! so their! ;)

  • COULDN'T care less ;)

  • Aimee Mann is a very talented, thoughtful, and thought-provoking songwriter.

So thank you dannlynch. This really needed to be said. The mindless excuses that people use, such as saying that they were just typing fast and not thinking, or that they could (not) care less whether it is correct, indicate that they probably don't think or care about a lot of things. To me (and many others, I'm sure), this renders their comments completely meaningless. I have no time for people who don't think.

  • What have you done in your writing life that warrants this scorn? The guy gave you his reason and that wasn't good enough for you. Be careful while you're sleeping, I might piss in your ear you filthy fish cunt.

  • Hey holden1787, that's a completely rude and unnecessary reply. I never said, nor implied that his comment wasn't valid. But partly because Aimee is such an articulate writer herself, I thought that dannylynch's reply regarding grammar was an appropriate one. I expect that many of Aimee's fans have an interest in good song-writing and good stories. If you don't, that's okay. But please don't diss those of us that do.

  • I'm not sure what you mean by "articulate writer" and whether that necessarily connotes artistic excellence. Mann's songwriting is simple, but hardly poetical. It works, though, for the reason you put it that (some) of her songs make good stories.

People connect with music for many reasons, some having nothing to do with good songwriting.

Next time, do everyone a favor here and check your high brow attitude at the door. This page is supposed to be about Aimee Mann and not you.

  • You're right about Aimee's songwriting being simple. And it is exactly that, along with her voice and the lyrical, or story ideas she employs, which appeal to me.

I never suggested that being a good, or an articulate songwriter had anything to do with artistic excellence. I'm just a big fan of her particular style and sound.

And you're also right that this is supposed to be about Aimee and not about you. So let's just talk about the music now. Cool?

  • Cool, my brother.

  • i am a friend o Aimees' and ur just so sadly incorrect

  • Rudy, I'm not sure if you intended to reply to me, and if you did, I don't know what you are referring to.

  • Wow. I'm 27, but this song describes my life well. Ya start getting older, you're not a kid anymore, but it's hard to get to the point where you feel like your life has as much meaning as you would like.

I'm a new Aimee Mann listener, btw. I like this song.

  • Nice song and great musicianship all around. Excellent!

  • Awesome, Aimee! I just saw the video, and started looking at the live performances too. All are very good, though different. Your best Pop Rock song in a while...

    Rock on!

YouTubers...only two comments for this live version of "31 Today" by an extremely talented singer/songwriter?

  • Masterful.
