  • I have the live in New York album. It is superb the way the band sounds with Yusef Lateef wading in on tenor.

  • to me he is the best alto player who ever lived. period. I love bird... but cannonball is cannonball.

  • @standrick He has few equals, that's for sure.

  • Orin said it all. a genius..

  • Under-rated according to whom? Cannonball was always among the very top masters in my book. Ask any good saxophonist if they don't study Cannonball, impossible. No band swings like this one.

  • Thanks Bret, loved this..

  • his music seems strange...can he play yakety sax?

  • I don't need the add,s

  • .....why the hell showed Miles up in the control room, that stupid arrogant fuck!

  • Love Cannoballs music, his album Somethin' Else w/ Miles Davis, Art Blakey Hank and Sam Jones is still one of my top 5 jazz albums.

  • Mr Keepnews, you are a treasure! Thank you so much.

  • I happened to wait on Cannonball's sister-in-law at a gardening center! She said her family always called him Julian, and she had some wonderful stories about him. She said they missed him every single day. I told her I hoped she would write these remembrances down one day. She said to promote jazz in the schools, the sooner the better. Cheers!

  • こんなところでオリン・キープニュースの声が聴けるとは思わなかった。Great!

  • One of my greatest idols of all time!! Thanks for uploading this!

  • cut to the music!

  • I say Bird was the greatest of all time for his innovation and creativity. But Cannonball had that and a more soulful expression, so I list him as my personal favorite. I like the stuff in the first half of his recorded output '55 to '65 best.

  • I lllllllllllllllloooovecannonball adderly !! Sounds like the best jazz I ever heard!

  • What's the name of that blues at 3:50?

  • its called Joe's Avenue

  • What album is it on?

  • I'm not sure what cannonball album its from but i think its by Wynton Kelly and is on the albums Takin Charge and Pot Luck

  • Actually, that song is "scotch and water", the Zawinul tune Cannon was introducing right before it starts playing. It's on the Live in New York album that this clip is about

  • @deathofrats2000 Yeah, ended up finding it somehow haha

  • A Cannonball Adderley's song played by Bill Evans and called "Know what I mean?".

  • オープニングの曲はなんて曲ですか?

    教えてください!

  • "Bill Evans" の "Know what I mean?"っていう曲です。

  • Great vid, thanks Jazz Video Guy

  • "Miles Davis showed up to stand in the control room and glare at people in the studio."

    priceless

  • hiya,

does anyone know the song thats playin at the end (around 10:00 ? )

    Hela. awesome.

    g x

  • @Faeriepunk23 "Blue Soul" by Blue Mitchell

  • you guys are all douches..

    just shut up and listen!

  • Most great players of every instrument play the same licks. the really great ones use them in different ways each time. Byrd did.

  • mmmm... lo dudo

  • Cannonball has such awesome voice. And hes an insane player freakin ridiculos

  • My all time favorite Altoist.........Cannonball Adderly.

  • Great subject.

    Very well done documentary.

Thanks for the energy invested & the sharing of the knowledge.

  • Thanks to jazzvideoguy for posting these vids!

  • wow he was amazing nearing altoist to bird, kenny garrett comes close tho

  • i personally think he was better than bird. don't get me wrong, bird s unbelievable but i just think that cannonball's sound is better all around the horn.

  • Both Bird and Cannonball left us much, much, too soon.

  • @JazzVideoGuy Just saw this, and all I can say is, "Be serious!"

  • i prefer to hear cannonball's tone but i love to hear birds amazing very uptempo stuff, like ko ko and anthropology

  • Bird uses the same exact licks in every single solo. it gets old after a while. Cannonball always hits you with a curveball. That is why I like him more.

  • 1. Really you think Cannonball was better. I don't really think you can compare them. I think in there own way they were both equally great. Canonball's blues and Birds blues show a different approach. Cannonball uses a lot of false fingerings which sounds great but Bird is the king of bebop rhythmic playing - Cannonball sounds academic in comparison. Cannonball is more imaginative at up tempo - (charlie uses a lot of clinched phrases especially in his later up tempo stuff).

  • 2. On ballards the opposite happens. Bird is the greatest of all the Bebop ballard players - very imaginative. His note choices on the slow stuff is superior to Cannonball. (in my opinion). Cannonball's sax tone is much more consistant than Bird and so his his technique(Drug use really affects Birds playing). However poor technique with charlie Parker did not mean poor performance - His ballards usually become more intense and emotional. (see My little suede shoes hi hat 1953 live recording)

  • 3. If you had said 'I prefer Cannonball Adderley to Charlie Parker' I would have accepted that. However to say he is better is simply wrong. They have both contributed enomously and so in my view they are equals. You can learn as much from listening to either player - and not learn the same things. Thats the beauty of being an individual in this music - you learn an individuals own approach.

    - And this is my individual opinion not the Gospel.

    Thanks Jazzvidoguy. Great Vid 5*

  • @conn6m Cannonball is not the equal of bird for the obvious reason that he is COPYING bird! Innovation is a thousand times harder and more rare than imitation.

  • @Diomedes22 r u stupid? show me one example in cannonball's solos that are copied from bird. All of bird's solos are remarkably similar. Cannonball on the other hand, never used the same lick twice. dont even try to tell me that cannonball copied bird because that is an insult to his greatness. don't get me wrong. bird was amazing. but i feel like once ive heard one of his solos ive heard all of them.

  • @minicannonball13 - No Bird, no Cannonball. When Cannonball came to NY, he was considered the second coming of Bird, which had to be frustrating. Listen to the album called "Cannonball Takes Charge". The man says that Bird was playing "everything" and "more" in the video. I know what you mean with Bird's solos, but everytime I hear them, they STILL sound innovative. The fact that so many great musicians were influenced by Bird (Cannonball included) *should* be enough to convince anyone.

  • @minicannonball13 I'm sorry to say, but no, it's not true that Cannonball never used the same lick twice. Don't get me wrong, he's still my number 1 influence, but he does have some licks that he went to more or less frequently. The difference between his licks and Bird's is that his licks didn't become immortalized because of 1) his lack of notoriety in comparison to Bird (as discussed in the video) and 2) there was never an Adderley Omnibook (except for one that you can't get in stores).

  • @minicannonball13 You shouldn't say that Cannonball was better than Bird, even if that is your opinion.......comparisons are quite childish, and in very poor taste.

  • @minicannonball13 I share your opinion, I personally like better Cannonball than Bird, I dont know If one is better than the other one, that really doesn't matter, both are great, I just feel that Julian is more soulful and I just like him better...

  • @minicannonball13 To paraphrase of quote from Clark Terry, Bird was the assimilator, most were the imitators, but Cannonball and Woods were the innovators.

  • @minicannonball13 Can you also think unpersonally?

  • @minicannonball13 It's hard to compare great artist as they contribute there own interpretations but I loved Cannonball's lyrical style melodic wise. To each his own.

  • Now remember all you kiddies out there, funk had a different meaning back then. LOL!

Nice to see some cats out here in all of this new technology...

    Thanx JVG!

  • The most underrated sax player of all time! Nothing beats a live cannonball album.

  • Amen!

  • i doubt that, live albums being generally dispensable, with the exception of jerry lee lewis's live at the starclub madman performance. and the most underrated sax player is earl bostic, at least in my book

  • i'm gonna have to throw in my vote for Steve Marcus

  • @jbowers2208 so true!

  • @jbowers2208 I don't think he's underrated. Everybody knows he's a beast. He's pretty well known, as opposed to someone like Richie Cole.

  • @jbowers2208 underrated!! i don't believe he is, most jazz lovers will tell you he sits right beside Charlie Parker. imho, no offense.

  • Cannonball was and will always be a giant...and you don't have to be an alto player to hear the impeccable time, storytelling character and sheer expressiveness of his music. Thanks for putting this up!

  • I was a drummer in my teens and through college and being such a Cannonball fan, I had this album the day it was released almost. Here, everyone plays his ass off and has there ever been a harder, cooking rhythm section than Sam Jones and Louis Hayes? And I learned that 3/4 could groove hard thanks to these great players. "Gemini" here and from the San Francisco album, "This Here".

I saw this exact band at Shelly's Manne Hole in LA.not long after this album came out.

  • Those of us who lucky enough to hear this band live will NEVER forget it.

  • Whats the song at 9:40?!?!

  • "Planet Earth" from the album "In New York".

  • "Something Else" in top 10 all time greatest jazz LPs

  • Great job, OK! I concur, Cannon's not canonized the way he should be. His introductions, alone, are classics (my mom and I shared, and some of his language became ours...)

  • nice

  • right on the spot!!! great video. i love cannonball. village vanguard live was one the very first jazz albums i ever bought and still one of my all time favourites.

  • Yes, it was an early favorite of mine, as well, which is why making this video was BIG FUN

  • Great video. Very interesting!

  • the best of the keepnews collection is thelonious monk orchestra at town hall

  • either that or the incredible guitar of wes montgomery

  • Thanks sooo much for this! Amazing video!!

  • Charlie Parker bequeathed "Cannonball" his boots & he wore them well. Just listen to Barefoot Sunday Blues or Autumn Leaves.

  • Cannonball didn't do too badly in the fame stakes. Having a Top Ten hit single in Billboard with 'Mercy, Mercy, Mercy' in 1967 helped raise his profile.

  • Cannonball's my favorite alto player.

  • let's not worry about cannonball's name being lesser known than perhaps it should have.

to anyone deep into jazz he's at the top and always will.

    PRAISE THE GIFT TO HUMANITY!

  • God, I love Bill Evans and Cannonball together.

First song is Know What I mean, the title of the album.

  • I like your chain and your feeling about Jazz. I played as pianist in the best clubs in Paris and in Europe in the 60's, and had the opportunity to play an evening at the Taboo Club in Paris with Cannonball and Nat. I will send you a mail about this !

  • victor feldman was awesome played piano and vibes

  • Yes he was born and raised in the UK he played with Ronnie Scott then moved to USA

Another great couple from UK were (ARE) Jonny Danworth and his wife Cleo Laine (Who I met)

  • P.s.

JazzVideoGuy posts the best videos. Thankyou

  • what a great player

  • whats the first song during the credits called?

its the second to last song in the whole video

  • 'Unit 7' by Sam Jones.

  • Nice tune.

  • sam jones was heavy duty

  • The 2nd to last tune that starts at 9:36 is called Planet Earth, written by Yusef Lateef. It's the 3rd track on the "In New York" album mentioned in the video.

  • thank you

  • 5 stars

  • this is awesome. The 1st piece of music - I ever owned. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

  • Orrin is a live enciclopaedia. How about putting his videos for sale ?

    Growald

  • If he was alive, he would have been a terrific spokesman for Jazz. Great Cannon!

  • Wonderful.
